Economics can be a harsh mistress. Sure, if you’re a progressive with Marxist visions, you think you’re a do-gooder, and you want just want to make sure every single person has free healthcare, a job for life, subsidized living quarters—and empty bike lanes of course.
But as history has shown over and over again, socialism fails—always—and attempts to jigger the free market always end up leaving the very people the extremists intended to help in despair.
In Crazy California, they thought it’d be a great idea to jack up the wages of fast food workers to a similar and sometimes higher rate than EMTs. Your heart attack might be important, but a stoner needing his Jack in the Box munchies is more critical.
Naturally, there have been, ahem, problems. Eighteen thousand of them:
There’s no such thing as a free fast-food lunch. Last year California super-sized its minimum wage to $20 an hour for employees at big quick-serve restaurant chains, and new research confirms that Sacramento did not repeal the basic laws of economics. According to the study, California only months later had 18,000 fewer fast-food jobs than if the law had never passed.
Another “victory” notch in the belt of far-left Golden State Gov. Gavin Newsom, who—unbelievably, despite his long record of utter failure—is considered by some to be a credible candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028. Explain this, Governor, to your potential opponent, Vice President JD Vance:

Progressive, left-wing policies always sound good on paper, but they have proven over and over again to lower the quality of life, as we see daily in blue city after blue city.
Sure, those that got raises are feeling happy, but what about all those folks who were left without a job?
On the other hand, by that September, “employment in the fast food sector in California fell substantially, with estimates ranging from 2.3 to 3.9 percent,” the authors say, “even as employment in other sectors of the California economy tracked national trends.” No surprise: When the cost of putting low-skilled fry cooks on the payroll goes up, the number of employment opportunities for fry cooks goes down. The study only measured job losses through September 2024, and Bureau of Labor Statistics data has suggested there may be more losses since.
The “Bureau of Labor Statistics data has suggested there may be more losses since.” Ya think?
Although the law only applies to franchises with over 60 locations nationwide, do you imagine the spillover effect doesn’t hurt local mom and pop restaurants? Of course it does. How are you going to offer your cook less than what they could make frying taters at the Burger King across the street? You can’t. I have several friends in the restaurant business, and they have only one recourse: reduce their staff, which of course means more people out of work.
What’s better: a low-wage starting job or no job at all? California just found out: 18,000 fast-food jobs lost after imposition of a $20 minimum wage. We’ve seen this many times before. How many more “experiments” do we need in places like NY when the evidence is already in? pic.twitter.com/PvhaV8sAkF

Many folks say that the Golden State is lost forever and that it’s full of insane people who deserve everything they get. The reality, however, is that it’s a truly wonderful place to live, with terrific communities, abundant nature, and an incomparable lifestyle. It’s the Democrat one-party machine that is hell-bent on ruining it, but if you get out of San Francisco and LA, you will find that they are nowhere near to achieving their goal. There is plenty of real America out there, still breathing and fighting and believing in this country.

Newsom has shown once again that whatever he touches turns to pain and misery—not gold. This is not a credible candidate for the presidency of the United States, and voters must let him know at every single opportunity.
Take a gig as an MSNBC host, Gavin, and stop trying to destroy the state that once was the shining light of the nation.
