The Heat Is On: DOJ Opens Investigation Into Andrew Cuomo's Deadly COVID Response

I’ve watched in surprise as former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has somehow reignited his political career after resigning over sexual harassment claims and overseeing one of the most disastrous COVID responses of any leader in the nation. His team forced elderly patients into nursing homes despite having the Wuhan Flu, and thousands of deaths allegedly resulted.

Now he’s leading the polls in the race for New York City mayor. Go figure.

But his troubles are far from over: a report Tuesday reveals the Department of Justice has opened an investigation into his testimony at House Committee hearings in June and September of 2024 in which he testified that he did not review a crucial order regarding shoving infected folks into the nursing homes. The receipts show otherwise:

The Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation of Andrew M. Cuomo, a front-runner in the New York City mayoral race, after Republicans accused him of lying to Congress about decisions he made during the coronavirus pandemic as governor, according to two people familiar with the matter.
The inquiry, begun about a month ago by the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington, comes after senior Justice Department officials in February demanded the dismissal of an indictment of the city’s current mayor, Eric Adams, on corruption charges.

At issue is the nursing home order and his subsequent congressional testimony:

Cuomo, who was governor at the time, issued a March 2020 directive that initially barred nursing homes from refusing to accept patients who had tested positive for COVID-19. The directive was aimed at freeing up beds for overwhelmed hospitals.
More than 9,000 recovering coronavirus patients were released from hospitals into nursing homes under the directive, which was later rescinded amid speculation that it had accelerated outbreaks.

Although the governor has tried to move on, the families of the deceased have not forgotten:

Cuomo’s office has responded that it’s all a plot, and that he told the truth during his testimony:

"We have never been informed of any such matter, so why would someone leak it now? The answer is obvious: This is lawfare and election interference plain and simple—something President Trump and his top Department of Justice officials say they are against," Rich Azzopardi, Cuomo’s spokesperson told Fox News.

Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) heartily disagrees:

Comer wrote a letter in April to Attorney General Pam Bondi requesting that the Justice Department investigate the matter. On Monday, he issued a blistering statement:

"Andrew Cuomo is a man with a history of corruption and deceit, now caught red-handed lying to Congress during the Select Subcommittee’s investigation into the COVID-19 nursing home tragedy in New York," Comer said in a statement Monday. "This wasn’t a slip-up – it was a calculated cover-up by a man seeking to shield himself from responsibility for the devastating loss of life in New York’s nursing homes. Let’s be clear: lying to Congress is a federal crime. Mr. Cuomo must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The House Oversight Committee is prepared to fully cooperate with the Justice Department’s investigation into Andrew Cuomo’s actions and ensure he’s held to account."

This action is sure to shake up the Big Apple mayoral race and remind people of all the mistakes Cuomo made during the pandemic. It’s going to get very interesting indeed in NYC.
