As we reported, Canadian voters doubled down on leftism and anti-Trumpism in late April when they voted in Liberal Party leader Mark Carney as their new prime minister. Apparently, former PM Justin Trudeau’s woke leadership wasn’t enough for them.
The new PM visited the U.S. president in the Oval Office on Tuesday, and there were plenty of tense moments. Carney, reacting to Trump’s many previous statements that the Great White North would be a great 51st state, told the president Canada is “not for sale” and that “is not going to change.” Trump shot back with a smile, “Never say never.”

He kept at it later in the meeting:
Trump later gave more extensive commentary on a possible North American political union, calling the US-Canada border an “artificial line” and saying it would lead to a “massive tax cut” for them.
“When you look at that beautiful formation [on a map] when it’s together — I’m a very artistic person — but when I looked at that, I said, ‘That’s the way it was meant to be’,” Trump said.
“But we’re not going to be discussing that unless somebody wants to discuss it,” he went on, adding “it really would be a wonderful marriage because it’s two places that get along very well.”

There was more tension as the two leaders talked tariffs, and the commander in chief showed no sign of blinking on the issue.

"It's not fair... Why are we subsidizing Canada $200 billion a year? And it's hard for the American taxpayer to say, 'gee whiz, we love doing that.'"
The only way for Canada to exist is if they beg to… pic.twitter.com/YOt34S32ha
The president had previewed his position on social media before the meeting even started. “Why is America subsidizing Canada by $200 Billion Dollars a year, in addition to giving them FREE Military Protection, and many other things?” he wrote.
I look forward to meeting the new Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney. I very much want to work with him, but cannot understand one simple TRUTH — Why is America subsidizing Canada by $200 Billion Dollars a year, in addition to giving them FREE Military Protection, and many…

His missive continued:
We don’t need their Cars, we don’t need their Energy, we don’t need their Lumber, we don’t need ANYTHING they have, other than their friendship, which hopefully we will always maintain. They, on the other hand, need EVERYTHING from us! The Prime Minister will be arriving shortly and that will be, most likely, my only question of consequence.
The 60-year-old Carney looked dejected as Trump indicated he was going to continue with the tariffs until fairer trade agreements could be reached:
President Donald Trump’s trade talks with Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney are off to a rocky start after Trump signaled Tuesday there will be no tariff deal.
A reporter asked Trump, who was sitting in the Oval Office next to Carney, if the Canadian leader could do anything to change Trump’s mind on tariffs over the course of the day’s meetings.
“No,” Trump said. “That’s just the way it is.”
There’s sure to be more coming out of this meeting, and RedState will bring it to you.
