ICE Comes Calling: Things Just Got a Whole Lot Worse for That Judge Housing a Tren de Aragua Member

We reported on Sunday on the strange story coming out of New Mexico where Doña Ana County Magistrate Judge Joel Cano resigned after Homeland Security discovered that an illegal alien Tren de Aragua gang member was living at his residence. Making it even more odd, Cano and his wife and daughter apparently liked to go show off their extensive weaponry and go shooting with the guy.

It's turning out to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad week for the Canos as the New Mexico Supreme Court ordered that Joel could never again be a judge in the state—and then ICE dropped by and arrested the couple.

According to a local Fox affiliate, Cano and his wife Nancy were taken into custody by the feds:

KFOX14/CBS4 were on the scene Thursday afternoon when the home of former Dona Ana County Magistrate Judge Joel Cano and his wife, Nancy Cano, when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement executed a search warrant and a probable cause arrest warrant, and both were taken into custody.

A spokesperson for ICE confirmed they were both taken into custody as part of an ongoing investigation led by Homeland Security Investigations.

KFOX14/CBS4 spoke with HSI agents on the scene, who said both are facing evidence tampering charges.

It is believed that Nancy Cano first hired 23-year-old Cristhian Ortega Lopez—whose tattoos, voicemails, and other evidence indicate that he’s a TdA member—to do some construction, and the couple eventually let him take up residence in a casita behind the main house.

Meanwhile, as mentioned, the state Supreme Court was unamused by the affair:

The Supreme Court of New Mexico ordered that Joel Cano "can never hold a judicial office again, be a candidate for a judicial office, and cannot exercise any judicial authority in the state, including officiating at weddings," according to Fox News Digital.

Ortega-Lopez had already been taken into custody in February after feds raided the Cano home. It was social media that did them in:

The feds also seized four firearms from Cano’s daughter’s home after getting search warrants related to social media evidence of Ortega-Lopez’s alleged ties to Tren de Aragua.

Investigators found pictures on social media of the Venezuelan national eating dinner with Cano’s family and posing for Christmas pictures in 2024. Cano is wearing a cowboy hat and a bolo tie, Ortega-Lopez is wearing a classic New York Yankees baseball cap and a collared shirt that conceals his neck tattoos, the very tattoos that investigators say reveal his gang affiliation.

Cano resigned on March 3 — and made no mention of Ortega-Lopez in his letter.

“Working with each of you has been a very rewarding experience for which I will remain eternally grateful,” Cano wrote. “All the best to everyone of you. I wish all of you a happy retirement once you are ready yourself.”

As I pondered this drama the other day, I wondered what the heck exactly was going on? Was there romance involved, were the Canos involved in gang activity, or did they just think this dude was such a stand-up guy that they should all hang out at the shooting range together?

Perhaps now, with their arrest, we’ll find out the truth.
