It Didn't Happen: Secret Service Driver Says Trump 'Never Grabbed the Steering Wheel' on Jan. 6

It was probably the most notorious allegation that came out of the "bipartisan" Liz Cheney–Adam Kinzinger Jan. 6 Committee clown show: that an unhinged Donald Trump “lunged” for the steering wheel of his armored car on J6 and demanded that it be rerouted to the Capitol, where his supporters were gathering.

The claim was leveled by a former aide to ex-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, Cassidy Hutchinson, who attested that the then-president “somehow managed to grab the wheel of The Beast to try to go to the Capitol when Secret Service agents told him they wouldn’t be going there, and that he then lunged at the agent who told him that.”

The story was always ludicrous, but now unearthed testimony by an unnamed Secret Service driver has further undermined the tale—because it would seem that it simply never happened.

…the driver said, Mr. Trump never lunged for the steering wheel or physically accosted the agents, contradicting one of the most sensational and hotly disputed elements of testimony given to the House Jan. 6 committee by a White House aide. The transcript of the driver is the first extensive eyewitness account of what happened in the armored vehicle to be made public.

“I did not see him reach,” the Secret Service driver told investigators for the House panel. “He never grabbed the steering wheel. I didn’t see him, you know, lunge to try to get into the front seat at all. You know, what stood out was the irritation in his voice, more than his physical presence.”

If "irritation in his voice" were an impeachable offense, then Joe Biden would face charges every single day.

Meanwhile, the transcript was released on Monday. Why has it been kept secret all this time?

Oh, isn't that convenient: former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney (voted out of office), former Illinois Rep. Kinzinger (retired because he knew no one would vote for him), Rep. Adam "Shifty" Schiff (D-CA), and their cohorts on the committee “entered into an agreement”:

The driver’s transcript adds detail to one of the most scrutinized episodes of Jan. 6, 2021. The transcript was never released publicly by the House Jan. 6 committee, which entered into an agreement with the Secret Service regarding 12 interviews to avoid disclosing “privacy information, for-official-use-only information, intelligence and law enforcement sensitive records and raw intelligence information.”

Cassidy’s story was certainly eye-opening. Too bad it appears not to be true.

In her stunning appearance before the panel in the summer of 2022, Hutchinson described Trump’s actions as they had been relayed by Tony Ornato, a former Secret Service agent who served as Trump’s deputy chief of staff at the time. Ornato recounted the episode in front of Engel, who did not interject.

“I’m the effing president, take me up to the Capitol now,” Trump said when Engel informed him they could not safely make the unscheduled journey, according to Hutchinson’s testimony.

Republicans are calling the delay in releasing the driver's transcript a cover-up—and it sure looks like they’re right.

“This firsthand testimony directly contradicts Cassidy Hutchinson’s story and the former J6 select committee’s narrative,” said Representative Barry Loudermilk, the Georgia Republican who has been leading the House G.O.P. effort to investigate the work of the Jan. 6 committee for bias. “Although the select committee had this critical information, they still promoted Ms. Hutchinson’s thirdhand version of events in their final report.”

The discredited Committee was a joke from the start—a one-sided, thoroughly skewed version of what actually happened that day. Liz Cheney continues to make sanctimonious appearances on MSNBC and the like, decrying the incredible dangers of Donald Trump, but one thing is clear—she and the rest of the thankfully disbanded committee cannot be trusted to tell the truth.
