I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for something lighthearted after having my blood pressure go bonkers while watching the Senate debacle. Here are a couple of things I like to do at home to relax.
Cryptic Crosswords
These are big in the UK and in Australia; they’re less common over here. I don’t even recall how I first came across them, but I got hooked.
What are they, you might ask? They look like British-style crosswords but the clues work differently. Here’s a primer from a UK newspaper.
They definitely take some getting used to – the first time you look at one you think what the heck kind of nonsense is this? – but I find them a great brain exercise. There are some very good books of them in the US, especially from Cox and Rathvon and sometimes from Hook or Shortz. The UK ones are too obscure for me.
Jigsaw Puzzles
I’ll get on a kick occasionally and work on jigsaw puzzles for a while. I can’t stand cheap ones even though I’m only going to do them once. A couple of brands I really like are Pomegranate and Clementoni.
One day I’ll get a wooden one, but handmade ones are super expensive.
How do you like to pass the time at home?
