Dem. Congresswoman Hospitalized After Hit-And-Run Driver Flees Crash

Democrat Rep. Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) was hospitalized Sunday after a hit-and-run crash in Toledo, sidelining the vulnerable incumbent weeks out from one of the most competitive House races of the 2026 cycle.

Kaptur, 80, was a passenger in the vehicle. Her campaign manager, 26-year-old Kegan Zimmerman, was also inside. Police said both suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to an area hospital.

Her office released a statement Sunday afternoon:

The crash occurred around 10:45 am near North Detroit and Central Avenues. Police reports said a southbound vehicle came into the path of the vehicle carrying Kaptur and Zimmerman, causing the collision. The driver of the other vehicle then ran from the scene.

Images from the area showed a black Ford Bronco resting on a sidewalk with its airbags deployed and a silver sedan with severe damage to its front end. What appeared to be an engine was lying across the street. Police officers at the scene said the silver sedan had been stolen, a detail that has drawn scrutiny as investigators work to identify the hit-and-run driver.

Morgan Valley, who lives nearby, said she heard the impact from inside her home and immediately called 911.

“At first I thought it was the cars hitting the water grate in the road because it made a similar sound. I seen the first silver vehicle with the engine tossed across the street upon impact. I seen the second vehicle in my neighbor’s yard.”

Valley said she initially feared someone had been killed because of the damage. Police later confirmed that the injuries suffered by those inside the struck vehicle were not life-threatening.

Toledo Police Chief Mike Troendle said Sunday evening that investigators had made “significant” progress toward identifying the driver.

"Our investigators continue to make progress on this case. I appreciate the work our investigators have put in today, as well as the cooperation we’ve received from members of the community. We’re committed to identifying the person responsible and ensuring they are held accountable."

Troendle also said he had spoken with Kaptur and was glad to hear she was doing well.

Kaptur has represented the Toledo-area district since 1983 and is the longest-serving woman in congressional history. The crash comes at a precarious moment politically: The Cook Political Report rates her 2026 reelection race a toss-up. She again faces Republican Derek Merrin, whom she defeated by less than one percentage point in 2024. She also faces a primary challenge from Madison Sheahan, the former ICE Deputy Director who resigned from the Trump administration in January specifically to run in OH-09.

Merrin put politics aside Sunday and asked Ohioans to pray for her recovery.

“I’m saddened to learn of the accident Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur was involved in. Please join me in praying for her speedy recovery and all those injured in the crash.”

Sen. Jon Husted (R-OH) likewise called for a quick and full recovery while urging authorities to apprehend the person responsible. The driver of a stolen car fled the scene of a crash involving a sitting congresswoman, and as of Sunday evening, remains unidentified. Toledo Police say that won't last long.
