The international community has spent years issuing statements about Russia's forced deportation of Ukrainian children. Melania Trump has been returning them. The White House announced Thursday that the first lady completed her fifth round of family reunifications, bringing five more children home. The identities of the children were not disclosed. All five were reunited with their families Thursday.

Melania Trump has been consistent on this from the start: No diplomatic stalemate justifies leaving children separated from their families. She's been proving it.
"While diplomacy and peacebuilding are important to this effort, they are surpassed by our collective ability to place children above international disputes. Every reunion is a reminder that compassion, dignity, and family can transcend even the darkest of times: war. My representative and I continue working with the governments of Russia and Ukraine to safely return children to their families and communities."
The five returnees are the first since April. The latest reunifications bring the reported number of children returned through the first lady's initiative to approximately 30.
It started with a letter. Melania Trump wrote personally to Vladimir Putin last August. President Donald Trump carried it himself and hand-delivered it during their August 15, 2025, summit in Anchorage, Alaska. The President of the United States, acting as a courier for his wife's humanitarian mission. That's how seriously this administration took it.

That letter opened a direct working channel between the first lady's representative and officials in Russia and Ukraine. The first group of eight children was reunited with family members in October.

Seven more children, six boys and one girl, were reunited with their families in Ukraine in December. A third round followed in February, when Melania Trump urged both countries to intensify their efforts to return every displaced child.
In April, the first lady helped arrange the return of six Ukrainian minors from Russia, with a seventh child scheduled to follow later that month. She said at the time that the difficult work depended upon cooperation from both governments.
"This is not an easy feat. I applaud leadership from both nations in working with my representative and me to bring love and safety back to each individual who has been displaced as a result of this horrible war. I'm grateful for the opportunity to serve as first lady but understand that my persistence alone is not enough."
Thirty children against nearly 20,000 verified deportees is not the finish line. Russia forcibly removed those minors from Ukraine, and the United Nations Human Rights Office counted almost 700 children killed and more than 1,800 injured between February 2022 and the end of 2024, with actual figures believed to be higher. But a working channel exists now that didn't before, and it has produced results five times.
The war has no end in sight. The diplomatic machinery has produced little. Melania Trump built her own channel, kept it running through five rounds, and her office says it isn't done.
