Seattle Mom's Group Rids City of Drug Paraphernalia, Her Reward: a State Investigation

The insane far-left antics of blue cities never cease to amaze. Just when you think they could not get more unhinged, they do. Soon, these once great cities will consist of two groups of people: the very rich, who are untouched by crazy liberal policies, and the very poor, who survive because of them. But in one of those cities, there is a group just trying to make things better. What are they getting for their troubles? An investigation.

Andrea Suarez is the founder of a nonprofit organization called We Heart Seattle. Its mission: to remove discarded drug paraphernalia from places like city streets, parks, and playgrounds. The group was founded in 2020 and, since then, has clocked in over 50,000 hours of volunteers picking up used hypodermic needles, pipes, foil, and other drug-related items. The items are distributed through King County harm reduction programs. Translation: county government helping addicts remain addicts.

Sounds great, right? Citizens stepping up to improve their community when the city and/or state government won't. So, how is the group being rewarded for getting this dangerous material away from children and other residents? A workplace investigation by the Washington Department of Labor and Industries following a complaint claiming the group engages in "improper handling and collection of hypodermic needles and fentanyl paraphernalia," according to documents from the Department.

Suarez says the group has committed no safety violations and points to the safety guidance portion of the group's website, which specifically states that volunteers should wear long sleeves, long pants, closed-toed shoes, and masks if they are sensitive to smells. Suarez had this to say about the investigation:

"We have been out here for... going on seven years every day, every weekend we're out there picking up needles and trash. And for my 'thank you' letter from the government, it was this letter saying, 'You're under investigation for allegedly improperly handling this very equipment that they hand out with no instructions.'"

A wonky government explanation of the investigation came from Labor and Industries Department spokesman Matt Ross, who stated:

"Inspectors may issue violations if an organization isn’t meeting those requirements, and may also issue violations for other safety hazards they observe in the course of an inspection. The inspectors also work with the organizations on the best way to address the hazards they find. Potential penalties will depend on the specifics of the violations."

Like many other blue cities, Seattle has been rapidly sliding into the category of leftist hellscape for quite a while. But there may be more residents like Andrea Suarez, who have had enough, than leftist Seattle leaders realize. As my colleague Ward Clark reported, Seattle Democratic Socialist Mayor Katie Wilson has only been in office since January of this year. But with crime spiking and the ongoing issues of open-air drug markets and homeless encampments, she is already facing a recall effort.

Suarez described her conversation with the investigator, saying:

“The woman investigating me said 'I need to walk around your office and your operation,' I go, well, that would be the park. And you're more than welcome to come out to the park and step on foil and needles and Narcan and poop with me.”

She added, “I believe that this is a political hit job, I really do.” But maybe the saddest part is how Andrea Suarez describes the city she calls home and just wants to make it a better place: “This whole city's a bloodborne pathogen nightmare. I’ve been saying that for years. I mean, Seattle's a biohazard.”
