What Is the Top-Ranked State in the Nation? The Answer Might Be Surprising

The list of reasons why America is the greatest nation on the planet would take up volumes. Just on the surface, the incredible beauty of places like California, Alaska, and Hawaii tops the list. The amazing food you can find in all 50 states, and to go along with it, each state's individual culture. It is unmatched. But there are other, more practical reasons why one state may be thriving more than another, and the state in the No. 1 spot for the last three years is a repeater.

According to U.S. News & World Report's Best States Rankings, Utah, "the Beehive State," has come in at number one overall for the fourth straight year. Texas came in at No. 1 with the best economy. The Rankings are a fairly good barometer of regional trends, with the Mountain West, Midwest, and Sunbelt coming in at the top of the list. The top five in order are Utah, South Dakota, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Nebraska. Rounding out the top 10 were New Hampshire, Idaho, Florida, Washington, and Vermont.

Eric Gertler is the U.S. News Executive Chairman and CEO. He stated that this year's list shows "a broader realignment of American economic growth," as businesses and workers are drawn to faster-growth, lower-cost regions like the Midwest and the South. He added:

"States in the Midwest and South generally moved up the rankings, while several Northeastern states fell substantially, showing how human and financial capital are actively migrating away from high-cost areas into more affordable regions."

States were ranked on things like education and healthcare, followed by economy, infrastructure, opportunity, and fiscal stability. Following the Mountain West and the Sunbelt states of Texas, Utah, and Idaho coming in at numbers one, two, and three, respectively, on their economies, New England states were tops in crime and corrections, with New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, and Massachusetts in the top four states — kind of a surprise when those places are full of liberals with soft-on-crime policies.

The results consistently back it up. America wins when Utah leads.

Hawaii came in at No. 1 in healthcare, but was followed by Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. States like South Dakota, North Dakota, and Nebraska had consistently low unemployment rates, and home prices stayed below the national average. According to Census data, the Midwest was the only region that showed every state had positive population growth from 2024 to 2025.

With California and New York having the highest taxes in the nation, data shows that residents of those states are leaving in droves for several of the states that are high in the rankings. Utah also has another advantage in that it appears to be a place that is attracting many young people starting families. It is the youngest state in the nation with a median age of 32.4 years.

So, which states are in the bottom rankings? The bottom five are: Michigan, New Mexico, Mississippi, Alaska, and Louisiana. But as a St. Louis girl, I wanted to know where Missouri ranked. The answer: 31. Hmmm...pretty average. I might be biased, but I think toasted raviolis and gooey butter cake alone should put us right at the top.
