One of the hallmarks of socialism is class envy. If your neighbor has a dollar more than you do, it is because of some nefarious action on his part, not because he worked hard for it. Socialist New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani fits the bill. Like all socialists, he looks at wealthy, successful people as ATMs for his many government programs. Recently, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon had a private meeting with Mamdani, trying to give him a bit of advice. But did he listen?

In an interview with Fox Business's Maria Bartiromo, Dimon talked about the private meeting he had with Mamdani on May 18 and revealed some of what they discussed. Dimon stated, "I had a great meeting with Mamdani, meaning it was pleasant, you know, but I said everything I wanted to say. I've seen mayors grow into the job."
He added:
"I mean, he's running the city with 300,000 employees now, he's never had a job like that. And I've seen mayors who just, they fail abysmally because they can't administer themselves out of a paper bag, or ideology blinds them to practical, realistic, real-world policy. And so we'll see. And, you know, if I can help them do the good stuff, I'd be happy to do that."
The meeting took place at the bank's new headquarters in Manhattan and came as Mamdani faced some backlash over not being shy about wanting to raise taxes on wealthy New Yorkers. In a separate statement, Dimon said that among the topics the two talked about were reducing government waste, cutting some of the government obstacles related to development projects, expanding public-private partnerships, and the city's competitiveness.
Dimon said to Bartiromo:
"Good policy is free. I feel like telling the politicians, 'Don't try to raise more taxes or spend more money, sit down and fix policy. And I think you can go 1% faster.' I literally believe that."

Bartiromo brought up the video Mamdani made on tax day, April 15, where he stood outside the home of Citadel CEO Ken Griffin, and announced a pied-à-terre tax, an annual tax on properties worth more than $5 million whose owners do not live full-time in those properties. The video prompted Griffin to announce that he would be adding more company jobs in Miami than in New York over the next decade.
Dimon might be trying to help, but the question is, will Mamdani listen? Dimon stated that he tried to describe the "realities" of governing a city the size of New York, saying:
"The competition, you know, there's taxes and there's individual taxes, corporate taxes, there's real estate taxes, there are other hidden taxes. And then there's quality of life, which has nothing to do with ideology. It's like crime, police, sanitation, hospitals. And I want him to succeed...I got to talk about affordable housing and child care. Most people want it. If you do it badly, it would be a disaster… Do it right. There are studies that can tell you how to do it right. Get people who know what they're doing and implement proper policies."
Dimon's problem is that Zohran Mamdani is as true a believer as it gets. On Wednesday, Mamdani announced a plan that would essentially seize property from landlords and transfer ownership to renter-controlled cooperatives.
Cudos to Jamie Dimon for giving it the old college try, but for socialists like Zohran Mamdani, even when their disastrous ideas are crumbling around them and the people they are supposed to help, their answer is that it's just not being done right.
