Crime Does Pay - Here's How Minnesota Fraudsters Were Living the Good Life While Kids Went Hungry

Americans are a giving people. We will go out of our way and spend our own time and money to make sure that people and animals in need are taken care of. It is who we are. In our zeal to help, we sometimes overlook making sure that everything is on the up and up. So, when people come along for whom those traits are not part of their society and culture, it is an example of the idea that not all cultures are equal. But maybe the worst part is when the fraud is so easy to commit that those who are engaging in it feel entitled to do so.

The breadth of the COVID-era fraud scheme uncovered in Minnesota involving hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars that were allegedly being used for a program to feed hungry children by many of Somali descent has been, at the least, shocking. But now, we are finding out just exactly what that money was being used for. It's an age-old scam, but still one that should make your blood boil.

Recently uncovered documents from a recent federal trial show that those involved were doing anything but feeding hungry kids. Luxury cars, private villas, overseas wire transfers, and champagne-popping videos were the order of the day. Some of the items included in the documents that funds were spent on include: a confirmation email for a stay at an overwater resort with a private pool in the Maldives. Lakefront property in, ironically, the "land of 10,000 lakes," first-class tickets to Istanbul and Amsterdam, a 2021 Porsche Macan, wire transfer receipts to China and East Africa, and piles of cash texted between defendants.

One of the dozens of defendants, 24-year-old Abdimajid Mohamed Nur, was sentenced to 10 years in prison and ordered to pay roughly $48 million in restitution. Nur used funds for the Maldives trip and cars. Abdiaziz Shafii Farah, 36, was sentenced to 28 years in prison. Between February and July of 2021, Farah made six wire transfers of more than $1 million to banks in China. He also texted someone to "please send $1000 to Mogadishu bakara," a presumed reference to a one-time al Shabaab terrorist organization stronghold, another possible facet to the case. It was Farah's restaurant and market, which contracted with the nonprofit "Feeding Our Children." But instead of feeding the children, Farah and his co-defendants fleeced Minnesota taxpayers for $47 million while claiming they had served 18 million meals at 30 locations. That didn't happen.

But this is not new. Where have we seen it before? Oh yeah, also in Minnesota and perpetrated by a group called Black Lives Matter (BLM). The death of George Floyd in Minneapolis turned out to be quite a cash cow for the group whose mission it was to end racism... or something. Because Americans of all races thought they were helping BLM to bring about change somehow, the group managed to rake in an astounding $90 million. It was later revealed that BLM founders bought homes in Los Angeles and Atlanta with donated funds, one at a cost of $6 million.

Back in Minnesota, the House Oversight Committee has launched an investigation into Gov. Tim Walz over the massive fraud scheme, what he knew and when he knew it. But that isn't deterring him. At a campaign event for the reelection of Washington Democrat Gov. Bob Ferguson, Walz doubled down and vowed to bring in even more Somali immigrants. What could go wrong there?

Currently, 61 people have been convicted in the Minnesota fraud case that continues to widen, and more investigations are ongoing. But even after all this, Americans are still going to want to feed hungry kids and try to make the country better. Because again, it's who we are.
