The Ridiculous Way Leftist Educators 'Celebrate' Thanksgiving - With a 'Day of Mourning'

Most Americans will spend Thanksgiving Day the same way, with family and friends, enjoying good food, good company, and, depending on which team you root for, a good football game. For some, there may be the question of how to deal with their lefty relatives who can't wait to call Donald Trump a fascist to their face. Having a nice bottle of wine on hand might be a better way to deal with them than pulling a Katie Porter with the mashed potatoes. In the end, for rational people, it is all about a day to give thanks for our blessings. But not everyone is thankful. Enter, far-left academia.

Imagine being so consumed with your political agenda that you are incapable of taking a day off from it. That is exactly what is happening at many left-leaning universities and school districts across the nation. Instead of being a day of gratitude, Thanksgiving is being portrayed as a day that celebrates "colonization," with a touch of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) mixed in.

It's all too silly and pathetic not to make fun of. So, let's start in California (shock), where, at the University of California, Davis, a group called the California History-Social Science Project hosted a Zoom event entitled "Decolonizing Thanksgiving in the Classroom." The description of this event was explained this way,

We will discuss reframing classroom practices and rituals about Thanksgiving. Centering perspectives from Turtle Island (a name for North America used by some indigenous people) will help us decolonize Thanksgiving and spark new conversations about how to authentically make meaning of this holiday with our students.

It's a pretty safe bet that the term "stolen land" is used throughout this presentation, and that white people are bad. Not to be outdone by the left coast, Washington University in St. Louis put out an invitation to an event that:

"...highlights and honors the way different cultures recognize and understand Thanksgiving, both as part of their history and as a tradition brought into the present day."

The invitation to the event, hosted by a university that thought simply hiding its DEI office in a location no one frequents and continuing its practices would be okay, went on to describe the event as a way to "actively contribute to inclusive and equitable practices that influence individual and systemic change."

As might be expected, in Massachusetts, home of Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) students sank some money into their "celebration." The "festivities" began with the "4th annual Thanksgiving Myth-busting" event, whose goal is  "continuing our exploration of the narratives justifying land grabs via colonialism." Included was a viewing of the TV show "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." I never watched this show, but as one of my dear friends would say, what in the blue hell does Buffy the Vampire Slayer have to do with Thanksgiving? It was all capped off by everyone hopping in rental cars to make a trip to the above-mentioned rock to participate in the "National Indigenous Day of Mourning" rally. The University of Massachusetts also referred to Thanksgiving as a "Day of Mourning." That announcement could be found at...wait for it... the University DEI and Accessibility website.

Among the other leftist revelries, the University of Maryland School of Public Policy held a discussion entitled, "Harvesting the Truth: Colonial Disruptions of Indigenous Food Systems & the Myths of Thanksgiving." Albuquerque Public Schools sent out a "November Indigenous Education Update" that read in part,

...many native people do not celebrate" Thanksgiving because it is a "reminder of the genocide of millions of Native people, the appropriation of Native lands, and the erasure of Indigenous cultures.

The update also referred to Thanksgiving as a day of mourning. Mourning is apparently a big deal this time of year for white liberal guiltists. The Berkeley, California Unified School District is also in mourning, as directed by their "Rethinking Thanksgiving Teaching Guide." They reminded everyone of the "painful legacy" and "nuanced perspectives" of the day.

It's all just another reminder of how horribly miserable people on the left are. As much as they are gobs of entertainment for us without realizing it, why can't they just put politics aside for one day and be thankful for whatever twisted thing it is they are thankful for? Maybe the only thing left to do is to wish any sane relatives of these people good luck on Thanksgiving. They are going to need it.
