For years before September 11, 2001, we often heard the phrase, "they were at war with us, but we weren't at war with them," when talking heads and "experts" spoke about radical Islamic terrorism. Since that horrible day, the United States has literally gone to the ends of the earth to find, not only those who were responsible, but also those who funded the operation.
But 9/11 wasn't the end of terrorism. It continues to occur worldwide, with a vast network of individuals and organizations behind the scenes funding its activities. Could any groups here in the U.S. be tied to terrorism? Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) wants to find out.
CAIR purports to be a civil rights organization that protects the rights of American Muslims. But evidence confirms @CAIRNational has deep ties to terrorist organizations.

I’ve asked the IRS to investigate their nonprofit status. This status is a privilege, not a right. pic.twitter.com/Nxdhj01oN4
On Monday, Cotton sent a letter to IRS Commissioner Billy Long, asking that they investigate the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, and its possible ties to terrorist organizations, including Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood. Cotton's letter reads in part:
"CAIR purports to be a civil rights organization dedicated to protecting the rights of American Muslims. But substantial evidence confirms CAIR has deep ties to terrorist organizations."
CAIR and its possible terror ties have been the subject of speculation for years. As Cotton cites in his letter, as far back as 2007, CAIR co-founders Omar Ahmed and Nihad Awad were not only listed individually as members of the Muslim Brotherhood's Palestine Committee, but CAIR was as well. The Palestine Committee is a coalition of various Islamic groups with chapters worldwide. At the time, both Ahmed and Awad were president and public relations director, respectively, for the Islamic Association for Palestine (IAP), a Hamas front group that dispersed propaganda, and a member of the Palestine Committee.

It gets better. In November of 2024, at the Annual Convention for Palestine, held in Chicago, Awad talked about how positively giddy he was over the October 7 attack on Israelis by Hamas, saying:
"The people of Gaza only decided to break the siege — the walls of the concentration camp — on Oct. 7. And yes, I was happy to see people breaking the siege and throwing down the shackles of their own land and walk free into their land that they were not free to walk in. And yes, the people of Gaza have the right to self-defense — have the right to defend themselves. And yes, Israel as an occupying power does not have that right to self-defense."
It is even apparent to other Muslim countries what the real mission of CAIR is. In 2014, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) listed CAIR as one of 83 terrorist organizations. A surprising move given that the UAE had promoted Islamism, and that CAIR had raised money in the UAE. At the time, the UAE Embassy in Washington, D.C., had lauded CAIR. In February 2025, CAIR settled a lawsuit brought by a former board member and employee, rather than disclose its sources of foreign funding.

Cotton concludes his letter to Commissioner Long this way, saying, "Tax-exempt status is a privilege, not a right, and it should not subsidize organizations with links to terrorism." CAIR's sketchy activities have gone on under the nose of both Republican and Democrat administrations, and it is beyond time to find out exactly what and who they are involved with. And as is with many things now, it will take someone from the Trump administration to find out what is going on.

Senator Tom Cotton just DEMANDED the IRS launch a full-blown investigation into CAIR for its well-documented ties to Islamist terror.
They’ve been getting tax breaks like a church bake sale?
Enough.
CAIR doesn’t need tax-exempt status.
They need subpoenas.
Thank you,… pic.twitter.com/5m1HJZMMf5
The post ends with:
Thank you, Senator Cotton.
Now let’s bring the hammer down.
