We all remember where we were and what we were doing that fateful July day in 2024 when we heard the news that Donald Trump had been shot. We have heard tales about how local law enforcement and federal agencies, such as the Secret Service, were not in communication with each other. But what we have heard next to nothing about is the would-be assassin, Thomas Crooks. Now, there is an alarming report out about some of Crooks' activities leading up to the shooting, while the media attempts to portray the man who tried to kill the president in a very different light.
Report: Alleged Would-Be Trump Assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks Was ‘Designing a Bomb’

I wonder what he was planning to bomb? 🤔
We still have so many unanswered questions about this young man.
Who was he communicating with?
I hope at some point we get the answers we deserve.… pic.twitter.com/tZElxR3rCk
A new report has surfaced that states that for several months before the attempted assassination of Trump, Crooks had been "designing a bomb." He had ordered several components through the mail, and they had not been shipped fast enough. At least one of those components may have been something called nitromethane, of which he ordered two gallons. In January of 2024, he sent an email to the company he had ordered the materials from.
“Hello, my name is Thomas. I placed an order on your website on January 19. I have not received any updates of the order shipping out yet and I was wondering if you still have it and when I can expect it to come.”

In August of 2024, through the course of the investigation of the shooting, FBI Pittsburgh Special Agent in Charge Kevin Rojek noted that “Crooks had researched ‘nitromethane, and other materials consistent with the manufacturing of explosive devices.'” What Crooks was going to do with such a device and whether he had the knowledge of how to construct it is unclear. But something the size of a backpack containing that material could have a lethal reach of nearly 30 feet.
But not everyone is focused on the danger Thomas Crooks posed. CBS, which also reported the potential bomb story, unsurprisingly, saw the man who tried to kill Trump very differently. They did report that Crooks tried to kill Trump, but that's where the similarities end. CBS gave Crooks what I will call the "Michael Brown" treatment. In 2014, when Brown was shot and killed trying to take a Ferguson, Missouri police officer's weapon from him during a scuffle, the standard media picture of Brown was that of a smiling teenager wearing a cap and gown at his high school graduation. CBS dutifully checked off that box, and also included Crooks' very politely worded email to the company from which he ordered the nitromethane, you know, so he could quite possibly make a bomb.
It has been the better part of a year since Thomas Crooks tried to assassinate now-President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania -- and we're somehow just learning that he attempted to acquire explosives that could, depending on how they were used, take… https://t.co/lh1FylJlu5 pic.twitter.com/HbsBeeFxUW

CBS was way more interested in who they called "a student with a bright future." They went on to describe a young man who was "simultaneously planning two irreconcilable futures," that of continuing an engineering degree, where all of his professors "were impressed by his dedication," and the attempt on Trump's life that he had to know would end up with him being in prison or dead.
Here is where the CBS puff piece gets dicey if you are a diabetic. We are treated not only to Crooks' SAT score, but also through various school assignments about his favorite holidays, that he loved football, fall weather, and that he had designed a 3D Braille chessboard for his visually impaired mother. What a guy. CBS then manages to squeeze in the last two paragraphs of speculation as to whether there is still an ongoing investigation into Crooks, who was shot and killed by Secret Service agents the day of the shooting.
The FBI says the investigation is still ongoing, and therefore has released little to no information about it, such as Crooks' motives or who he may have been in communication with. That gives CBS plenty of time to humanize a man who tried to assassinate a then-former and now current president they dislike. As if we needed any more confirmation that A: the media has learned absolutely nothing since November 5, 2024, and B: because they have learned nothing, this is just business as usual.
CBS News reported that it's obtained "hundreds" of Thomas Crooks' emails and other academic records, but it's only released ONE email.
