Republican representative Joe Wilson, a senior member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, collapsed at an event on Tuesday and was rushed to hospital, his office said.

The official X profile for Wilson, 77, wrote a message that said the congressman “was taken ill and is being evaluated at a local hospital in Washington, DC.”

According to his son, South Carolina state Attorney General Alan Wilson, his father is in "stable" condition, and doctors "have confirmed [to the family] he has experienced stroke-like symptoms." He wrote in an X post:

If you can't see the post, it reads:

I just spoke to my mom who is currently at the hospital with my father. Doctors have confirmed to us that he has experienced  stroke-like symptoms. I was able to speak with him moments ago and I am incredibly thankful that he is stable and being monitored by medical professionals

The Reuters story (linked above) continued:

Wilson fell ill as he was sitting in the front row of a celebration of Ukraine’s Independence Day at Ukraine House in Washington’s diplomatic enclave. The Ukrainian ambassador had just started speaking when she stopped and asked for a doctor.

The 77-year-old Wilson represents South Carolina's 2nd Congressional district. According to the NY Times

"[Rep.] Wilson is running for re-election against David Robinson, a Democrat, to represent the conservative central South Carolina district that first elected him to office in December 2001. He is a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and also serves on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce."

We'll update this story with new details as they emerge, on Wednesday and the coming days. In the meantime, prayers are needed for Wilson and his family.
