There’s that line from ‘The Godfather’ where Michael Corleone says to Fredo, “You’re my older brother, and I love you. But don’t ever take sides with somebody outside the family again.” When it comes to Donald Trump, Breitbart is (sort of) Michael Corleone, and it looks like Bannon was just Fredo’ed.

Stephen K. Bannon is stepping down from his post as executive chairman of Breitbart News, the company announced Tuesday.

Mr. Bannon’s departure, which was forced by a onetime financial patron, Rebekah Mercer, comes as Mr. Bannon remained unable to quell the furor over remarks attributed to him in a new book in which he questions President Trump’s mental fitness and disparages his elder son, Donald Trump Jr.

The question that everybody should be asking is, “Who the hell actually runs Breitbart?” If Mercer is just a “financial patron,” does that mean that she also gets to call the shots? Or were people at Breitbart informed, “Either he goes, or the checks will stop flowing.”

Either way, it would be interesting to know who exactly made the call.

Whatever we find about the story going forward, Bannon’s epic fall is something to watch. From having an office in the West Wing to being out at the publication where he orchestrated pro-Trump coverage starting in 2015.
