The annual speeches to the United Nations General Assembly by presidents of the United States always make news because they involve the leader of the free world, and virtually everything he does — or doesn't do — is news.
A couple of weeks ago, Donald Trump took a few days off from his frequent media appearances, and his absence created a blizzard of false news and conspiracy theories.
The president's United Nations speech this week certainly created a blizzard of real news.
It was a full-throated assault on many things that are bothering the 47th president, including illegal immigrants in the U.S. and elsewhere, governments that don't protect their people from such illegal surges of humanity, and notably the United Nations itself.
You can watch part or all of his remarks here, courtesy of our national treasure C-SPAN. And you can read the full transcript here.
I strongly recommend you devote some time to consuming at least parts of his remarks. They are very illuminating on Trump's priorities and concerns.
Speakers at the UN are asked to keep those remarks to 15 minutes. President Trump used his window of opportunity to go for about 54 minutes. His appearance was shocking to some who don't pay attention to him routinely.
My RedState colleagues provided full coverage from several angles. And you can find their posts here.
As always, you are invited to leave your thoughts on the president's speech, the mainstream media's, and other things on your mind in the Comments below.
You can hear my thoughts on the president's remarks and the United Nations' role and failures in this week's audio commentary here:
This week's column may be the most-read Sunday post since my arrival here. Thank you for that, folks.
It had occurred to me that when you watch today's feckless Democrat Party stumble ever since last November's election that they appear to be very creatively doing everything possible to help Donald Trump, their worst nightmare, and his party do well in the upcoming midterm elections.
So, I went over tons of material and pulled it all together: Democrats' Shocking Plot to Help Trump and the GOP.
When you look at all the accumulating evidence (they're still going at it), their efforts are really quite impressive. Also humorous in a way.
In the most recent audio commentary, I have some intentionally wicked fun with all the name-calling flying around in our political circles these days.
I admit that I, too, may have participated in that juvenile pastime. However, that was during recess back in the third grade when Mrs. Dwyer was the playground monitor.
In show-business news that probably does not matter as much as suggested by all the attention it gathered, this week's "big story" was the suspension of alleged comedian James Kimmel from his late-night perch on the Disney-owned ABC network.
Kimmel took to the pulpit of his program following the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk to suggest the alleged shooter somehow was connected to the MAGA movement when, in fact, the truth was exactly the opposite. It's the left's standard effort to deflect blame from the loose cannons on that side.
A large number of ABC affiliates said they would no longer carry the no-longer-funny program, and Disney "suspended" him. This generated a wave of complaints that Disney was suppressing free speech, complaints magnified by sympathetic media coverage.
And complaints which conveniently ignored widespread suppression of conservative news by the same media colluding with the Biden administration.
In my opinion, Disney was suppressing the spread of false information by a highly-paid employee, much like an usher yelling "Fire!" in a crowded movie theater, and the theater disciplining its employee for such false claims that endanger others.
I also suspect a hidden part of Disney's motivation was to take advantage of Kimmel's gaffe to free themselves from an expensive and fading program genre whose audience has dwindled as the host abandoned humor for political controversy, much as CBS did by cancelling its late-night show.
As usual, my RedState colleagues were all over the unfolding story. And you can find those posts here.
