Democrat Gretchen Whitmer has won Michigan’s gubernatorial race, defeating Republican challenger Bill Schuette. At the time the race was called, she was ahead by 12 points.

Whitmer, was first elected to Michigan’s House in 2000, then served in the Senate from 2006-2015. She was the first woman to lead a senate caucus in the state, serving as minority leader for her final 4 years. She did not seek re-election in 2o15.

The Whitmer team celebrated the victory with this uninspiring tweet:

She will assume the office of Governor in January.
