University Forces All Graduates Through 'Antiracism' and Microaggression Training

Another college makes it official: All graduates must receive explicit life instruction concerning “diversity, equity and inclusion.”

Forty years ago, elementary schoolchildren frequently expressed dreams of being firemen, policemen, and teachers. These days, youngsters hope to become diversity officers — or they should. From the look of things, it’s the most promising field of the future.

Apropos of our increasing emphasis, Ohio’s Miami University is holding its first online “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion” class. Similar to a recent move by Illinois State University, the school will require every student to pass it in order to graduate.

To some, such a mandate may seem redundant — isn’t all of college a lesson in DEI?

Either way, Miami’s website offers a course description:

We all benefit from diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) advancements. Beyond reflecting Miami University’s work, passion, and commitment to DEI, these in-depth online modules offer fresh insights and best practices for cultivating diverse communities and workplaces.

The modules are as follows

  • Allyship and Advocacy
  • Ageism and Age Bias
  • Intercultural Communication in a Globalized World
  • Cultural Intelligence
  • Strategies for Workplace Inclusiveness
  • Ableism and Inclusion
  • LGBTQ+ Identities
  • Bias, Stereotypes and Microaggressions
  • Race and Antiracism

How did someone’s sexual sensibilities make its way into life training at the university level? Aren’t microaggressions by definition the small stuff we’re not supposed to sweat? Is taking a side on “antiracism” within the purview of public education?

Such things were once inquired about by critics, but scrutiny appears to have subsided.

As for antiracism, for those who are unclear, UCLA Law Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw defines the term:

“Anti-racism is the active dismantling of systems, privileges, and everyday practices that reinforce and normalize the contemporary dimensions of white dominance. This, of course, also involves a critical understanding of the history of whiteness in America.”

Miami University’s Cristina Alcalde — vice president of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion — explained the importance of DEI to the school paper. She hears perpetual research proving that “diverse” businesses are the bomb:

“We repeatedly hear how research tells us that well-managed, diverse workplaces are more competitive, innovative and successful than non-diverse ones. Creating this course was an opportunity to tap into and bring together existing Miami faculty and staff expertise on diversity, equity and inclusion for the benefit of all in the Miami community and beyond.”

The U.S. military agrees; from Defense.gov:

Diversity, equity and inclusion in the military are necessities for the United States, Bishop Garrison, the senior advisor to the secretary of defense for human capital and diversity, equity and inclusion said.

Back to Miami, Senior Director of News and Communications Jessica Rivinius spoke to the paper about urgent need.

Calling back to my elementary idea…

“Throughout every sector of society, there is an urgent need for leaders who will advance diversity, equity, and inclusion, and build better and stronger workplaces and communities. By learning from Miami’s amazing faculty and experts, and the additional resources offered, participants of the course will be empowered to thrive — and help others thrive — in our increasingly complex and globalized world.”

Education has evolved. The old version sharpened students’ thinking skills and developed abilities that would take them far into their careers.

These days, wherever anyone ends up, government schools appear intent upon Americans being of the same mind when they get there.

Will it work?

Not necessarily…
