On Saturday morning, the New York Liberty faced off against the Seattle Storm. But before the two teams went to war, they joined in protest.

As reported by The Daily Caller, while the National Anthem resounded, both sides walked back to their locker rooms.

TDC asked:

When did people lose pride in America? When did people stop being proud of the national anthem? I remember back when I was a kid, we were all proud to be Americans.

It’s not a bad question.

What is happening to us?

It seems to me that America is a family. And no matter who you are, your parents and grandparents and great grandparents have done things with which you disagree. They’ve been wrong at times, just as you will be to those who come after you. But they’re still your family. And one of the ideas of family is that you improve over time. You learn from the mistakes of those before you. And you try not to make wholly new ones, even though you will.

Walking away from “The Star-Spangled Banner” — and, much more significantly, all the related goings-on as of late — appears to indicate a complete abandonment of America. Of the idea of a nation.

Of a family.

And abandonment is, by its nature, a relinquishment of hope.

Where does that leave us?

Somber things to consider if all you’re wanting to do is watch some tall girls bounce a ball and try to throw it into a hoop.

The players also voiced support for Breonna Taylor, who was horrifically shot to death in Louisville in a wrong-residence no-knock warrant raid (See RedState contributor Jeff Charles’s write-up on that, as well as my coverage of Kanye West’s admirable act of generosity).

Breonna’s death is outrageous, and — in my opinion — justice has been far from served.

And it should be — because justice is part of the idea of America.

If we continue along this trajectory, there are particular things I’ll miss about America. I’m missing some already–

I miss the days when people would show up to have fun and play a game. And other people would watch while they ate food that was slowly killing them. That was a great time.

What was that called again?

Oh, yeah — sports.
