North Carolina’s got some interesting things going on as of late, and one of those is the city of Durham’s teachers union’s political demands.
In a recent statement trashing the set plan for reopening, Durham Association of Educators, it appears, forgot it was an association for teachers and imagined it was Bernie Sanders.
First, the group mind-read some major Republicans — a popular parlor trick these days:
“Do not be deceived: Trump, DeVos, and Berger want schools to open because they care about protecting wealth and big business. Their failure to invest in public education over the last decade shows that they do not value our children or school workers.”
They then…
…just as a reminder, this is a teachers union…
…they then provided economic solutions to society’s ills:
“There are concrete policies that have permitted other countries to flatten the curve and return to public life.”
Are you ready for ’em?
Here we go:
“(Those concrete policies are) moratoriums on rent and mortgage, universal health care, direct income support regardless of immigration status.”
It’s a bold move: A teachers union leaves the realm of scholastics altogether and calls for everyone in America to get to stop paying their (generally) biggest bill.
Reading, Writing, ‘Rithametic, and Revolution.
In addition, they’ve announced that all people walking around in the U.S., whether citizens or not, should immediately receive “direct income support.” And they’ve let everyone know that socialized healthcare needs to start pronto.
To quote Frank Drebin:
“We must fight together, collectively,” the statement says, “for changes that will permit our communities to thrive during this pandemic and beyond. ”
As noted by The Daily Wire, the Durham teachers aren’t alone:
DAE is not the first to use the coronavirus crisis as an opportunity to implement far Left policy goals. Earlier this week, the United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) — a 35,000-member union in the Los Angeles Unified School District — stipulated that the district cannot reopen until charter schools are closed, the local police are defunded, the wealthy are taxed more, there is “Medicare-for-All,” and the district is bailed out by the federal government.
“It is time to take a stand against Trump’s dangerous, anti-science agenda that puts the lives of our members, our students, and our families at risk, UTLA President Cecily Myart-Cruz said. “We all want to physically open schools and be back with our students, but lives hang in the balance. Safety has to be the priority. We need to get this right for our communities.”
From where I sit, if public schools had already solved the Rubix Cube of how to consistently turn out extremely educated students, maybe it could go on to solving the rest of the world’s problems.
But so far as I’ve been able to tell, with regard to Step 1, Mission Not Accomplished.
Back to NC, the state’s forging ahead and to the Left in other ways: As I covered earlier this week, the city of Asheville made the front page by voting for reparations for black communities.
Still, not everything’s gone as planned in the area of world-change. As relayed by Sister Toldjah last month, some in Asheville attempted a CHAZlike autonomous zone.
Cops were quick on the draw:

It’s just as well — once universal income’s up and running, no one’ll need to form another country.
But the DAE may not have thought things through — with universal income, there’ll also be no need for education. Why would anyone go to school, or try to do remotely well for the little bit they attend, when they’re going to get paid no matter what?
Points to ponder, as we wait for the teachers unions to save the world.
