Stephen King, Others Tweet the Horror: People at the Wuhan Coronavirus Conference Were Old, Male, White and Straight

I have major respect for horror writer Stephen King (and a ton of reverence for one of Stephen’s prime influences, I Am Legend author Richard Matheson — check out his great Twilight Zone episodes).

Someone not likely an influence of King’s: Donald Trump.

After Friday’s press conference — during which the President declared a state of emergency over the Wuhan coronavirus — Stephen noticed what was apparently a horror in its own right: The people standing around Donald Trump in the Rose Garden…were white:

“Note that Trump’s coronavirus team is all male, all old, and all white.”

The great author must’ve been glad to discover there was, in fact, a woman present — Dr. Deborah Birx, who’s serving as the administration’s coronavirus response coordinator.

She took the mic right after the Commander-in-Chief.

Mr. King came back 20 minutes later and gave her props:

“Quite the parade of white men in ties, eh? The lady with the shawl looks so great compared to the rest of those bozos.”

Stephen definitely wasn’t the only one to take note of the racial makeup.

GQ correspondent Julia Ioffe wondered what was up with a bunch of old white-guy businessmen:

Washington Post reporter Matt Viser didn’t seem to believe the crew could bring an all-American approach, given they were pale:

DC/Marvel comics writer Don Marz thought a bunch of peeps who were male and white and in suits constituted a “What the [F word]” moment:

I’m with him on the suit thing; next conference, I want ’em all in these:

Wired Manager of Audience Development (and Medium journalist) Alex Whitcomb noticed even more — not only was the gang male and white, but straight:

Comedian Jensen Karp chimed in:

Here’s political scientist and journalist David Roghkopf:

Art director Lizzie Finn — who’s masterminded visuals for Vogue and Esquire — said it wasn’t a press conference.

And Obama was better:

Why anyone would ever want the scrutiny of being president is beyond me.

Then again, Trump’s already old, white, male, and straight. I guess “President” doesn’t really make it all that worse.
