On Thursday, Katy Tur pressed a guest in order, seemingly, to declare that Republicans must surely be — indirectly — murderers.

In light of a school shooting in Santa Clarita, California — which tragically took the lives of 15-year-old Gracie Muehlberger and a 14-year-old boy — Katy attempted a link between the GOP and evil.

Speaking with Ret. Special Agent Jim Cavanaugh of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, she put it this way:

“You were just speaking about senators not showing the courage to put their seats at risk to pass common-sense gun reform, background checks, etc.”

Doesn’t “put[ting] their seats at risk” imply they’d be doing what the voters don’t want, therefore going against the dictate of their jobs?

Anyway, murder:

“Would you go so far as to hold them responsible for the deaths that are continuing, the lives that are continuing to be lost with gun violence?”

It should be noted that legislatures have already passed laws against crimes like those in Santa Clarita — that is to say, there are already laws against shooting innocent people.

If Katy’s referring to gun laws, those would simultaneously prohibit non-murderers from having guns, at best; at worst, they’d prevent only non-murderers from having them, allowing more easily for murder.

But to be fair to Katy, Jim certainly did seem to imply Republicans are chicken:

“I would say to Mitch McConnell, ‘Ok, boomer. Put the bills on the floor. Why are you afraid to let the bills be voted on and debated on the floor of the Senate?’ That’s the most un-American thing that I can think of.”

Here’s more of the chicken thing:

“Soldiers will risk their lives to save children. Policemen will, firemen will. But senators won’t risk their seat to save the children’s lives. That is really disgraceful.”

Of course, law-abiding citizens own guns, in part, to save lives — their own, as well as those of their families.

It would be disingenuous to suggest that gun owners’ reason for possessing firearms is their lack of concern for life.

As for allowing for debate and voting, as pointed out by The Daily Wire, Republican Kentucky Sen. Mitch has indicated he’d be happy to put forth legislation Donald Trump is open to actually signing:

“If the President is in favor of a number of things that he has discussed openly and publicly, and I know that if we pass it, it will become law, I’ll put it on the floor.”

There’s an undeniable logic to that.

Plus, from TDW:

However, the overwhelming majority of the rank-and-file Republicans in the Senate are staunch advocates of the Second Amendment, and, accordingly, many of the anti-gun bills that Democrats have passed in the House are unlikely to gain much traction and advance through the upper legislative chamber.

I’ve said before that politics is mostly one giant straw man argument. If we can’t even recognize where the disagreements lie, there’s no way to have any sort of productive discussion. When those on the Left suggest the pro-2nd amendment position is founded upon some psychopathic favor toward harming the innocent, they engage in the absurd.

Both Katy and Jim should know better. The goal of the Right is a free and safe society; minus the free part, the two sides simply have differing ideas of how that utopia might be reached.

One way it definitely isn’t attained is through making wayward accusations against half the country on national television.

#Fail.
