The Mouse Makes History: Disney Channel Features Its First Gay Teen Couple

The Disney Channel is breaking new ground in the area of same-sex relationships.

For the series finale of its three-season-long Andi Mack, the character Cyrus Goodman drops a bomb: He confides to his classmate, TJ Kippen, that he has a crush on him. The two intertwine their fingers.

Sitting at a table by firelight, at the end of mundane conversation, TJ asks:

“Is there anything else you wanna know?”

He moves his hand toward the boy he likes.

“Is there anything else you wanna tell me?” Cyrus replies.

TJ: Yeah. Is there anything you wanna tell me?

“Yes.”

The webisphere went wild.

About the scene, actor Luke Mullen — who plays TJ — wrote, “Honored to be a part of such a groundbreaking show. I hope my character can inspire people to proud of who they are and love who they love.”

During the episode, the pair also sang along to Lady Gaga’s “Born this way.”

Cyrus was already openly Rainbowed — he came out in a 2017 installment. Given that the show debuted that same year and — as per Pink News — it “followed 13-year-old Andi and her two best friends Cyrus and Buffy,” I take it he was 13 at the time. He became the first Disney Channel character to utter the words, “I’m gay.”

But Cyrus and TJ have the distinction of being the Mouse’s first official gay teen couple.

According to PN, some are calling for a new vehicle in light of the romantic transpiration:

Some fans have even asked Disney to give the characters their own spin-off show in response to the touching scene.

In a statement Wednesday, creator Terri Minsky explained that the finale was all about satisfying the hit series’ fans:

“[T]he best part of making Andi Mack was our audience, who let us know we mattered to them. The series finale is for them.”
