Well. This isn’t good.
35-year-old Juan David Ortiz was arrested in Laredo, Texas and charged with four counts of murder, unlawful restraint, and aggravated assault. Three of his victims were women. According to Webb County prosecutors, he confessed to the September killings.
What’s additionally disturbing is that Ortiz is a U.S. Border Patrol Agent.
And a navy veteran.
Here’s even more disturbance: as per the district attorney, Ortiz believed he was performing a public service, due to the fact that his victims were prostitutes.
DA Isidro Alaniz explained:
“The scheme in this case, from Ortiz’s own words, was to clean up the streets of Laredo by targeting this community of individuals who he perceived to be disposable, that no one would miss and that he did not give value to. The evidence that was presented to the grand jury this morning showed that he killed these four innocent individuals in a cold, callous and calculating way.”
If Ortiz — who is now considered a serial killer (the designation denotes, among other things, at least three victims) is found guilty, Alaniz will seek the death penalty.
Ortiz allegedly killed all four while on duty.
A fifth, would-be victim — Erika Pena — got away after Ortiz pulled a gun on her. She was able to reach a nearby state trooper.
As reported by Fox News:
“Authorities said Ortiz knew most of the victims and targeted them. Melissa Ramirez, 29; Claudine Luera, 42; Guisela Alicia Cantu, 35; and Janella Ortez, a 28-year-old transgender woman, were all killed.”
All four had been shot. One died of blunt trauma.
Ortiz is being held on a $2.5 million bond.
