Fisticuffs at the Virginia Attorney General’s Debate, and Not Just From the Candidates!

It had to happen eventually.

For the past year (plus), I have worn two hats – by day, a lobbyist for a prominent pro-Israel group, and by night, a columnist for a prominent conservative Republican leaning news organization.

I don’t have to tell you - I work in dangerous territory. You know that I have been called “worse than Hitler” twice over! I am also frequently called a Nazi (despite being Jewish), a fascist, the supporter of a dictator, a genocider (my younger brother would heartily agree, although let me tell you, he deserved what he got, and he still lives), and even a barbarian to the right of Attila the Hun (but was Attila really a conservative?).

Every day, I take my life in my hands by just speaking to the left to advance my causes.

Well, Thursday night, while attending an Arlington GOP debate watch party for the Virginia Attorney General’s race, I finally experienced the violence inherent in the systems I inhabit. While simply watching the debate (see the full debate here), I observed a crazed individual trying to hunt down the Arlington GOP Chairman and tangle with another GOP party official. Later, after leaving the bar, the crazed individual returned to attack again, causing immense collateral damage.  I found myself assaulted and battered as this crazed individual tackled another man into me, and then I suffered additional damage in my loss of my $8 beer – a tasty Mango beer – which splashed wastefully all over my face and clothes.

Is there a good lawyer out there who wants to represent me?

Now, because this was the only debate for the white-hot Virginia Attorney General’s race, I had expected fisticuffs (if not in person). As we all know, this race was rocked recently by the GOP execution of one of the most impressive October Surprises I have seen in years. The Democrat candidate, former delegate Jay Jones, is still reeling from the exposure of his depraved texts and phone calls, and the RCP average for the race has been reversed, so he is now lagging 46.3% to 46% behind his opponent, the sitting Attorney General, Republican Jason Miyares.

With this background, I knew the debate was going to be nothing but constant negativity. Because it is for a “lower-tier” race, most voters are generally unfamiliar with it and the incumbent, and neither candidate has an excessive amount of cash to advertise (although Miyares is doing far better there). So, there is no question that, over a short debate, negative attacks would provide much more bang for the buck than would positive boasts. Further, Jay Jones really had no credible explanation for his unhinged statements, so he needed to get in the gutter and get as dirty as possible.

The actual debate was exactly what I thought it would be, as documented by my RedState colleague. Miyares did what he needed to do, never letting up on Jones. The most impressive part of the night – besides the fisticuffs I observed in the bar – was when Miyares did exactly what I hoped he would do, after Jay Jones committed a near political suicide by bringing up his passion to “protect the children” as Virginia Attorney General, which allowed the following counterpunch haymaker by Miyares:

You say one of the pillars of your public safety platform is protecting children.  Were you protecting Jennifer's children when you said you wanted to see them die in their mother's arms?

Sometimes, politicians become so lost in their own world of propaganda that they miss the most basic facts of reality, which is what happened here that night. Jay Jones apparently doesn’t understand yet that, unlike other Democrats, he can no longer run around crying “won’t someone think of the children” anymore. This is because people now associate bad things with Jay Jones and “the children.”

After the debate, Jay Jones' campaign boasted that he had raised an impressive $500,000 on the “strength” of his debate performance. More BS. Jones did as I expected, and torched Miyares for being too closely supportive of Donald Trump, which is his most effective attack in the Democrat-leaning and federal government worker-heavy Commonwealth of Virginia. But none of these attacks was especially remarkable by itself, and he himself was not striking in making them. Jones' new money is, in reality, coming from hardcore leftist Democrats who just want to stick it to Trump and Republicans in general, and these funds are always available to any Democrat who claims he/she/xer will “fight back” against the latest Republican Hitler President and his evil forces.

I believe that this race is now leaning Republican. Unlike the other two Virginia statewide races, the GOP candidate here, Miyares, has had a large and consistent fundraising lead over the Democrat, Jones. And the GOP Attorney General organization is heavily outspending the Democrat Attorney General organization as well. The scandalous text messages have, and will continue to, hurt Jones in both voter support and fundraising. And it could get even worse if, as is rumored, there are other Jay Jones scandals waiting to drop (but if so, the GOP should drop them now, since the voting is underway). Because of all this, Miyares has the money to punch home his message that Jay Jones is a crazed individual who shouldn’t be anywhere near the Attorney General’s office, let alone trying to save the children of Virginia.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of crazed individuals lurking in American politics these days, aren’t there?

Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
