Sometimes, you just miss your moment in American politics.
In 2012, the then Republican Governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, experienced a boomlet for the presidency. Republicans everywhere were excited with the idea that the opinionated, tough, and straight-talking governor from a left-wing state might challenge President Barack Obama – an overrated candidate if there ever was one – and oust him after his lackluster first term.
But, perhaps concerned that he had just been elected a couple of years before, and had little prior government experience, Christie bowed out of that race.
In 2015, Christie finally ran for president, but by this time, the bloom was off the rose. Republicans largely ignored him – perhaps that 2012 Obama hug was too much? – and he ended up an also-ran, dropping out early and losing to Donald Trump, a celebrity billionaire, who was a similarly opinionated, tough, and straight-talking candidate.
And now we come to Governor Gavin Newsom of California. Newsom, or “Newscum," as President Trump likes to call him, is gearing up for a run for the Democrat nomination for President in 2028. And many Democrats seem to enjoy his trollish behavior towards President Trump and the GOP in general.
But like Chris Christie in 2012, Gavin Newsom has already missed his opportunity, back in 2024.
You may remember that I wrote about Newsom’s 2024 presidential opportunity. In June of 2024, Joe Biden’s polling was bad, and his senility was open and obvious. Although the MSM played dumb, everyone else under the sun could see how dreadful Biden’s condition was, including Newsom. Newsom also knew that Vice President Harris was a DEI lightweight, as he knew her personally, and he also knew that many Democrat leaders – like Obama, Pelosi, etc. – also were aware of her weakness. For that reason, Gavin Newsom was clearly preparing for a potential race for the presidency in 2024. And, of the three potential Democrat candidates who were prepared to run a national race for the presidency, he was certainly the strongest, as he wasn’t senile, was good looking, had media skills, was from the largest state, was willing to put in the time and effort to effectively campaign (unlike the vice president), and perhaps, most importantly, could not be directly tied to the poor record of the Biden-Harris administration on the economy, the border, and even foreign policy.
But when Biden was finally exposed in the debate, Biden worked with other Democrats to block Obama and Pelosi’s push for a ‘mini-primary’ and Kamala Harris effectively used the race card, plus her own status as the heir apparent, to get the Democrat nod on her way to losing the popular vote and the electoral college to Donald Trump.
Now, Gavin Newsom is trying again, this time for a presidential race three years away. He is lobbying for a Democrat partisan gerrymander in California, which is even more lopsided than the current (hidden) Democrat partisan map is, to 'fight back against the evil Republicans' who are redrawing districts in Texas after receiving a letter from Trump's DOJ that some of their districts might "constitute illegal coalition districts." He has hired a crack squad of ‘meme experts’ for his social media, which has helped give him a boost in current polling and is supposedly causing Republicans to have “meltdowns.”

There is no question that Newsom’s partisan smashmouth politics are effectively channeling the Democrat TDS zeitgeist these days (see the Doom Loop).
The problem is, though, that Gavin Newsom can try all he wants in 2025 to make Newsom 2028 happen, but like Gretchen Weiner in Mean Girls, he isn’t going to be successful in his quest. It’s not going to happen.
This time, unlike in 2024, he is one of a multitude of Democrat candidates who are preparing for this race. And unlike many of them, his public office will be ending in 2026, which will leave him without a perch to raise money and attract attention. Also, unlike in 2024, his record as the governor of California will be more fully in focus, and that record isn’t a good one, as my boss on this website has well-reported.
Worst of all for him – Gavin Newsom is a heterosexual white male, facing a large field of (potentially) many diverse and accomplished Democrat candidates, competing for the nomination before the entire party membership in a huge number of primaries and caucuses. His party voters love DEI, and he isn’t it. In 2024, he was one of only three potential candidates, and Kamala Harris’ weakness as a candidate with the Democrat convention delegates gave him an opening to potentially steal the nomination from her. Which he didn’t succeed in doing.
You almost have to feel sad for Gavin. Almost.
