Vote for the Incompetent Crook in New York City - It's Still Important!

If you want to understand American politics, it’s important to understand your own mistakes.

So, for this reason, I am taking a second look at the stunning election victory of Zohran Mamdani in the Democrat primary for mayor of New York City.

In my earlier column, I predicted that Mamdani would lose, based on the following two factors:

  1. There was going to be bigger turnout, as moderates came to the polls to defeat the lunatic, communist, and antisemite.

  2. Cuomo had a huge edge in spending.

I was wrong on both accounts. In 2025, the turnout was 1,006,294, versus in 2021, when it was only 801,829. So, it was bigger, but it clearly was not made up of more moderate voters. And the Cuomo fiscal edge was less wide than it appeared.

Let me explain.  What I didn’t realize were the following important facts that boosted Mamdani’s campaign:

First, as former Lt. Gov. of New York Betsy McCaughey wrote, the NYC Campaign Finance Board (CFB) rigged the primary election to benefit Mamdani. The CFB declared incumbent Mayor Eric Adams ineligible for public financing, alluding to federal allegations that have since been withdrawn. This was election meddling that prevented him from participating in the primary and greatly damaged his public image. More importantly, the CFB ignored Mamdani’s fundraising shenanigans. He helped another candidate, who backed him after the first round, to make sure that she received public funding for the first round. He received additional and likely illegal financial help from the Democratic Socialists of America, which was totally ignored by the CFB. Mamdani also heavily benefited from a network of leftist nonprofits that provided him with the expertise, manpower, and connections to win the race, and which do so by receiving taxpayer funding courtesy of Democratic lawmakers. There was an additional $2 million elite PAC operation funded by Silicon Valley billionaires, Hollywood celebrities, and out-of-state tech entrepreneurs — spending more than his entire direct campaign raised from actual voters. As a result of this extra and well-directed spending, Mamdani and his allies were able to turn out their radical voters.

Second, Andrew Cuomo is a terrible candidate, whose campaign – and the independent groups backing him – apparently couldn’t do basic opposition research. Since Mamdani won the race, numerous controversial statements of his have leaked out. They include: 1) Mamdani checked "African American" on his Columbia University application, despite not being black or even American at the time; 2) Mamdani routinely appeared at protests/riots where the phrase “globalize the intifada,” which means “to riot and kill Jews, globally,” was used and on signs, and refuses to renounce it; 3) Mamdani surrounds himself with other crazed lunatics; 4) Mamdani took money from a radical Muslim cleric who supported the terrorists who bombed the Twin Towers in 1993; and 5) Mamdani talked about “seizing the means of production,” which is a well-known communist phrase. And there are plenty more where these came from.

None of these statements seems to have been noticed by Cuomo during the campaign, or by his independent groups. I haven’t seen such an opposition research dereliction of duty since the Virginia governor’s race of 2017.

Perhaps the opposition researchers for the Cuomo forces need a visit from the two Bob’s?

Now, we turn to the general election. Mamdani is the Democrat candidate, and the Working Families Party candidate, in the heavily Democrat city. Curtis Sliwa, the Republican, is the founder of the Guardian Angels and ran four years before, not breaking 30 percent against Mayor Eric Adams. Adams is running, again, as an independent. Andrew Cuomo is also running as an independent. And finally, there in another independent, James Walden, who is a prominent lawyer.

The latest polling has Mamdani in the lead. Slingshot Strategies has Mamdani at 35 percent, with Cuomo at 25 percent, Sliwa at 14 percent, Adams at 11 percent, and Walden at 1 percent.  Gotham Polling & Analytics has Mamdani at 41 percent, with Cuomo at 26 percent, Sliwa at 10 percent, Adams at 16 percent, and Walden negligible. And American Pulse Research & Polling has Mamdani at 35 percent, with Cuomo at 29 percent, Sliwa at 16 percent, Adams at 14 percent, and Walden at 1 percent.

It is likely that for Mamdani to be defeated, the field will have to consolidate, with at least one of the big three – Cuomo, Adams, and Sliwa – stepping down and endorsing one of the others. Scarily enough, the incompetent Cuomo is still the strongest candidate. Mayor Adams’ numbers are so bad, in the words of one of the above pollsters, that he is “cooked.” Sliwa is a Republican who is simply not seen as a credible potential mayor by enough of the voters to win the race. And Walden does not currently make any impression and does not have the money to make one in the future.

Of course, none of the big three wants to be the candidate to step down. They all see the potential victory availing them if they are the sole candidate facing off against Zohran Mamdani, and his lunatic beliefs. But if at least one of these gentlemen doesn’t step down, Mamdani will likely win.

So, that is where we are currently stuck.  The numbers are consistent, and they don’t lie.

Editor’s Note: Zohran Mamdani is an avowed Democratic Socialist and has a real chance to become the next mayor of New York City.
