Jeff Sessions Should Be Removed from the Senate Judiciary Committee

Sen. Jeff Sessions can’t, or won’t, properly and accurately define sexual assault, because he is too committed to the cause of supporting Donald Trump in all things and at all costs. What Donald Trump described in the now-infamous 2005 “Access Hollywood” tape was sexual assault. If Senator Sessions can’t admit this factual matter of law, he should not be on the judiciary committee and should step down or be removed immediately.

This is the position I take today. It is also the position taken by leftist feminist group Ultraviolet Action, which has a petition to remove Senator Sessions that has garnered, at the time of this posting, 32,000+ signatures. They almost exclusively target conservatives and Republicans and attack them as being opposed to women. A clear part of the “War on Women” narrative.

On this, they are correct.

Donald Trump saying what he said is not sexual assault. At the time, there was no real evidence Trump had actually done the thing he described, although there is now. (More on that from Jay here.) But Senator Sessions was asked a specific question that had a right answer, and gave a specific response that was the wrong one.

He was asked if doing the thing that Trump described would be sexual assault. It would be. Senator Sessions either didn’t know that, or lied about it to support Trump. Either should be considered disqualifying for this committee.

From The Weekly Standard, via Jim Jamitis:

SESSIONS: This was very improper language, and he’s acknowledged that.

TWS: But beyond the language, would you characterize the behavior described in that as sexual assault if that behavior actually took place?

SESSIONS:
I don’t characterize that as sexual assault. I think that’s a stretch. I don’t know what he meant—

TWS: So if you grab a woman by the genitals, that’s not sexual assault?

SESSIONS: I don’t know. It’s not clear that he—how that would occur.

For emphasis, let us repeat that line.

I don’t characterize that as sexual assault. I think that’s a stretch.

Remember what it is we’re talking about here (again from the Weekly Standard):

“I’ve got to use some Tic Tacs, just in case I start kissing her,” Trump says. “You know I’m automatically attracted to beautiful—I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab them by the p—y. You can do anything.”

On Sunday morning, another top Trump surrogate, Rudy Giuliani, conceded in an interview with George Stephanopoulos on This Week that Trump was describing sexual assault.

“The problem isn’t just the words,” Stephanopoulos said. “What Trump is describing in that tape is sexual assault.”

It is sexual assault.

Some sick people, in defense of the remarks, have claimed that what Trump was describing is consent. They have even suggested that “all women want it” by citing the popularity of 50 Shades of Grey. Seriously. It seems like this shouldn’t require refutation, but just to be clear, a man going up and grabbing a woman by the crotch is sexual assault. Just because the assaulter claims “she wanted it because I’m famous” does not make it consensual. That is stupid and you are a stupid person if you say that.

If you suggest that all women like it this way because an imaginary story that they made into a movie was popular, then you are even more stupid.

And Jeff Sessions is stupid. Or a liar.

This situation is now all the worse with the many specific accusations being reported.

Sessions and Trump are giving truth to the leftist, feminist, radical anti-Republican agenda, and bolstering the (we thought) overblown claims of a “War on Women” by acting exactly as despicably as the caricature such groups have created. They hurt all other Republicans with their actions. Especially Sessions, who at least had some credibility before now.

This was not a hard question. It was easy. He should have answered it correctly. Truthfully. Instead he answered it like a lunatic who will say anything to pimp his loser candidate. That’s not integrity, and it’s not legal expertise, and it’s not good judgment. He should have those qualities to be on the committee. Since he doesn’t have those qualities …

Kick Sessions out. Do it now.

Jeff Sessions doesn’t think the Trump tape is a big deal.
