WATCH: Ron Paul Says 'I'm For Gun Control' (and so he is)

Yes, that is a direct quote of former Congressman Ron Paul speaking with Wolf Blitzer in a CNN interview today. However, it’s not exactly how it sounds. Paul said he supports the Second Amendment, then explained that he is for gun control, but only a certain kind.

Watch:

Well I still believe in the Constitution and I believe in the Second Amendment, but I’m for gun control. Where the real killing’s going on is our guns in our military going overseas and bombing and killing and starting wars that aren’t necessary, and selling weapons. We’re selling weapons, we’re putting weapons in the hands of ISIS, you know, in Syria. Those are the real guns of war that we should be dealing with.

And of course if we’re really worried about guns on the streets, why has it been totally ignored, a lot more people are dying in our inner cities. Crime on weekends is just out of control, so we need a more police activity to try to protect some people. But property management, that is preventing the rights of an individual to own a piece of property, whether it’s a knife or a gun, it’s protected and that shouldn’t be the issue. I do not think it will achieve anything. And since I am the one that’s very much in favor of non-aggression or violence, I would be for it if I thought it would reduce the violence, but it will not, and therefore I will defend the Second Amendment.

About a third of that is correct. I’m sure you can guess the third. It definitely won’t reduce the violence, but for Paul to suggest that he would be for this government control of our lives and property, in opposition to our Constitutional rights, if it achieved some goal he’s in favor of is not a very libertarian point of view. It’s not a conservative point of view either.

So even though he was being cute when he said “I’m for gun control” and flipped it to refer to the military, his closing remark shows that the plain reading of his quote is also accurate. He IS for gun control. IF it achieves some non-specific goal of “reducing” violence.

So once again, everyone is terrible even on their own issues. Politics is garbage, basically.
