Daily Links - August 21, 2012

Today is August 21st. • On this date in 1911, the theft of the Mona Lisa from the Louvre in Paris, France was discovered when an artist set up his easel near the painting, only to find it wasn’t there. It was later learned that the day before, a former employee of the museum had stolen it by walking in, taking it off the wall, sticking it under his shirt, and walking out. It was not recovered until two years later when the thief tried to pick up a ransom for it. And thus concludes today’s edition of Keystone Everybody. • Also on this date, in 1858, the famed Lincoln-Douglas debates began. They focused on the issue of slavery and of course, Lincoln’s time at Bain Capital. • On this date in 1959, Hawaii became the 50th state, having successfully argued that it was not, in fact, Kenya. • And finally, today is National Senior Citizen’s Day, when people across the country celebrate by walking to school uphill both ways in the snow, wearing onions on their belts, and shaking their fists at clouds. Consider this an Open Thread.
