Daily Links - May 25, 2012

Today is May 25th. On this date in 1977, the movie Star Wars opened in theaters. It became a global phenomenon, received 7 Oscars, and proved definitively that Han shot first. Also on this date, in 1983, Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi opened in theaters. It too was a critical and commercial smash, and proved definitively that yub nub. On this date in 1986, millions of Americans participated in “Hands Across America”, an event meant to create a continuous line of people holding hands from one coast to the other. I still say it would have been better as a continuous conga line. Ralph Waldo Emerson, Miles Davis, Robert Ludlum, and Frank Oz were all born on this date, in 1803, 1926, 1927, and 1944 respectively. Just as the Mayans predicted. And finally, today is “Geek Pride Day,” as well as “Towel Day“. Star Wars anniversaries and two geek holidays? I’m about to get my nerd on and read comic books while watching sci-fi movies and listening to Weird Al. And so should you! Consider this an Open Thread.

The facts about the growth of spending under Obama | WaPo
“Carney suggested the media were guilty of “sloth and laziness,” but he might do better next time than cite an article he plucked off the Web, no matter how much it might advance his political interests. The data in the article are flawed, and the analysis lacks context — context that could easily could be found in the budget documents released by the White House.”
