The first week in August of 2011 I was attending the annual RedState Gathering. There were rumors of a big announcement, media excitement, and a buzz in the activists who were in attendance. As Governor Rick Perry began to take the stage I was sitting behind his wife, Anita, in the second row. I already knew what was about to happen, but I was filled with excitement none the less. While I was a Front Page Contributor to RedState, I was still just an activist looking for leadership that could correct the course of our nation, and Governor Perry was an absolute rock star.
To put it mildly, I was a fan.
Despite all that happened in the 2012 GOP Presidential Primary, I remain a fan today.
I remain a supporter of Governor Perry for many reasons, but the biggest reason is that despite a record of executive experience unparalleled in the GOP field, Perry remains a humble man from Paint Creek, filled with a faith in God, and an optimistic vision for America. The world of politics is bare knuckle, it tests your patience on a daily basis, in fact, I often wonder why I do this rather than something that doesn’t result in mud slinging trolls stalking me on the internet or sending death threats to friends and family.
But then I am reminded of people like Rick Perry.
In Perry I see a leader driven by a purpose other than anger, I see a leader driven by a desire to correct our course as a nation and bring us back together under a common purpose, once again being the beacon of liberty to the world. Governor Perry understands that to be a beacon of liberty, we must first restore our own government to its proper size and scope, returning the aspects of governing the federal government has seized back to the states and the people, as the Constitution requires.
When my time as Managing Editor of RedState came to a close and I was looking for new opportunities to continue contributing to the conservative movement, I was very happy to get a call from the campaign in waiting for Governor Perry. After a series of emails and phone calls, along with a trip to Austin for a sit down interview, I was absolutely ecstatic to finally be notified that I had been hired for a small role within the comms shop for the Perry 2016 Campaign. So full disclosure, I worked for the Perry campaign, and yes, I am one of the many staffers who has decided to stay on as a volunteer without pay. This is why I have been largely absent from writing here at RedState, until recently my position wasn’t actually public.
My support of Governor Perry, while certainly influenced by my nostalgia for Reagan, isn’t based on just the character aspects of humility and faith in God. I am also a big fan of the Governor’s record.
During the 14 years of Perry was Governor of Texas he was a conservative, and unlike many, his record became more conservative over time.
This is why I am not ready to see Governor Perry leave the conversation just yet. That’s why I am pushing this #StandWithRick money bomb today. Last week my email inbox and DM’s on twitter blew up with friends and activists asking how they could help the Perry campaign. Many of them were frustrated that the current media environment had precluded the Governor’s rather serious policy proposals from getting traction among primary voters. I even had people for whom Perry is their second or third choice offering to help out the campaign. I decided a money bomb was the best way to go.
