It’s time to defund the United Nations

The United States of America keeps the United Nations afloat. In 2009 we were assessed 22% of the budget of the UN, and paid out slightly under 24% of what was collected, thanks to the Tax Equalization Fund system*. So in practice we paid about a quarter of the UN budget. Without us, the UN has to do some serious belt tightening.

So if we’re going to keep alive the UN as we know it, spending $598,292,101 in a direct assessment and surely more in other expenses, we’d best make sure we’re getting our money’s worth. The Obama deficit has gone through the roof and we simply cannot afford frivolous luxuries anymore. If the UN is not achieving its mission, it’s time we stopped paying for it.

This month I believe the UN has finally crossed the threshold of uselessness, and it’s time we defund it.

We worked hard to win the House this year. We earned it. We convinced the voters and they went our way. We’ve earned the power of the purse. As Barack Obama is still the President, we are limited in our ability to change policy, but we do have the power to defund anything. It’s time we used it on the UN.

After all, despite the UN paralysis with respect to Iraq, the UN perfidy with respect to Israel, the UN silence in Africa, and the UN shame in abortion worldwide, the one great, shining example of UN success was always supposed to be Korea. In Korea, the UN stood up to aggression and saved a free people from Communist tyranny.

Of course, UN Security Council Resolution 82 was passed when China’s permanent seat was held by the Taipei government and the USSR was protesting. So of the four vetoes present, all four were anti-Communist. So yes, it was a perfect scenario for consensus and action at the UN, and so the UNSC voted 9-0 (with the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia abstaining and the USSR not present) to defend the Republic of (South) Korea from violent aggression by the Democratic People’s Republic of (North) Korea. The UN had a primary mission of working for peace, and it delivered for South Korea.

This weekend the UN Security Council had an opportunity to act to defend South Korea again and throw the weight of international opinion in favor of maintaining the armistice that has mostly kept the peace between the Koreas. North Korea launched an artillery attack the South last month, on November 23rd. All the UN had to do was to declare that another aggressive attack, condemn it, and promise the weight of international force against the North should the attacks continue. All the UN had to do was to repeat its performance on June 25, 1950.

The UN failed. US Envoy Susan Rice says “The gaps that remain are unlikely to be bridged,” meaning no UNSC resolution is coming on the Korean matter. While in 1950 Taipei had a veto, in 2010 that veto is held by Beijing and another veto is held by Moscow, and it’s clear that both vetoes will be used to protect the North Korean aggressors from UN condemnation.

If the UN can’t even keep the peace at the location of its one great success, then there’s no point in even having a UN anymore. It’s time we defund it, withdraw from it, and suggest the New York offices be moved to Geneva or Vienna.

* The UN skims off of every UN salary a private withholding tax, called a staff assessment. Those staff assessments go into the Tax Equalization Fund. In 2009 every country got about 10% of its dues knocked off by the TEF, except the US because our share was used to pay the taxes of every UN staffer that owed US income tax on his UN salary. Essentially the UN taxes its employees to subsidize the UN dues of Japan, Germany, and every other country not named the United States of America.

For now, de-fund it as soon as it is within Congress’ will-power to do so.

Sadly I think it is wishful thinking on Conservative’s part. I don’t see any chance in the future that we get something like this done (although I could see a guy like Christie just cutting it off at the tap).

Defund and get us out of the UN!

bigiron Monday, December 20th at 7:33PM EST (link)

We, the USA, need to leave the UN and I do believe that most of my friends would agree with that action. The UN appears to be even more corrupt than our Congress and just another “money hole”.

ALL funds from the USA to the UN need to be cut off as well as ALL credit to the UN. We should never have joined the UN at all; the UN is was just a rehash of the failed League of Nations and we had the sense (at the time) NOT to join in that fiasco.

The UN needs to leave the USA, post haste. Let Europe have the miscreants if they want them but why would want or need them here.

The reason the UN exists is to furnish the basis for the NWO (one world government) which was the same mission as the League of Nations which thankfully failed to become established.

Time to repeat this: Regarding the United Nations Secretary General’s recent article in the Washington Times, a key phrase was missed by all: “Finally, I am urging progress in eliminating other weapons of mass destruction and limiting missiles, space weapons and conventional arms — all of which are needed for a nuclear-weapon-free world. [Note the hyphens.] Disarmament must anticipate emerging dangers from other weapons.” To the UN, “Conventional Arms” includes small arms. You know, Hand Guns, Rifles and Shotguns, such as those we the people posses here, as protected by our Constitution. You see, to the UN, small arms should only be in the hands of governments – like Somalia, North Korea, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Cuba and so many more of the dictatorships that run that “Cesspool in Manhattan” than one would care to remember, let alone count. In fact, there’s a woman in that cesspool whose entire “Raison d’être” is disarming the United States citizenry.
I suggested shortly after 911 that we rebuild the Twin Towers taller and better than before, rename them the “New United Nations and World Trade Center” and restrict and limit the UN’s occupancy to just the top, oh say, dozen or so floors of that complex – so they’d have an unobstructed view of all incoming flights, of course. At the time I wanted Senator Jessie Helms to do it, but he took ill and never was able to take it up. More’s the pity.

Let me see, the founders of the UN was China, Russia, France, Great Brittain and US. Did any one really think this would work? Who of this bunch had a free Republic to create the wealth to support this fabian, communist group? Now you see the problem. We, the only free Republic, live in a world where we are the only wealth generating society surrounded by thugs, despots and dictators. So we let these people create another Federal Reserve System for the world called the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Ah, what a great idea, now all of the third world nations including China, Russia, France and the rest of non profitable groups of people of the world can borrow funds from thsi new banking fund which is funded by the good old United States of America. We in 1913 got our Fed which gave the money changers of Europe a method to siphon money out of the U.S. and now with the IMF and WB they have the method to loan U.S. prosperity from the Fed to the IMF and WB into the Third World. Just exactly how many welfare recipients does the United States need before we go belly up?
Get us out of the U.N. the IMF, the World Bank and everyother organization that is sucking on the American tit. This should be the goal of the new Congress.

As mentioned by another astute poster in this thread,

the libs themselves have given us a new tool to deal with the UN complex in NYC – “Kelo” it. Since its inception it has only worked a handful of times to get the right result. One Korea, where the UN voted a resolutioin to put troops from many nations into S Korea in 1950 to defend it from N Korea’s invasion. How did that happen? Russia just happened to be absent from the Security Council when the vote was taken and it succeeded 4-0 – otherwise they would have vetoed it no doubt – pure chance! Then in 1962 JFK sent Stevenson to make the case of the missiles in Cuba before the full Assembly which he did. But when we actually needed a sustaining vote to embargo Cuba – he sent Dean Rusk to the OAS (where we got it)! – not the UN There, success because we avoided the UN(!). But deep within the UN Charter is a provision allowing the right of defense by way of (unilateral) pre-emptive strike, for any member Better get that treaty out and dust it off. boys, Iran’s nukes are soon going hot and Israel is member of the UN member……

chamberD Monday, December 20th at 11:36AM EST (link)

The UN is a working model of a one-world government, intruding its tentacles into ever-increasing issues that have nothing at all to do with its initial purpose, which was starry-eyed at best.

Part of its current mission is to hamstring the West, siphon off its wealth, and distribute it to Third World peoples, mostly living in and around the equator.

Montesqieu wrote way back in the 1700s that the ‘southern peoples’ were given to laziness and indolence and eager to be taken care of by government, while the ‘northern’ people were industrious and independent-minded. The UN recognizes that in order for the former to have material benefits they have to be extracted from the later. Thus O devised his plan to STEAL billions of dollars from US taxpayers and through the UN, disburse it to countries whose citizens are perpetually indolent — Marxism writ large!

I’m not smart enough to click links before I tell people to do research.

As of June 22, 2011 there have been a total 68 VAERS reports of death among those who have received Gardasil® . There were 54 reports among females, 3 were among males, and 11 were reports of unknown gender. Thirty two of the total death reports have been confirmed and 36 remain unconfirmed due to no identifiable patient information in the report such as a name and contact information to confirm the report. A death report is confirmed (verified) after a medical doctor reviews the report and any associated records. In the 32 reports confirmed, there was no unusual pattern or clustering to the deaths that would suggest that they were caused by the vaccine and some reports indicated a cause of death unrelated to vaccination.

With the new incoming 112th Congress, the new Republican chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee will be Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. Her efforts will be backed up by Rep. Kay Granger who will be the Chair of the House Appropriations subcommittee responsible for appropriating the money for the UN activities.

http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/incoming-chair-senate-foreign-relations

I don’t know much about these two ladies, but, if they are as tough as I have been reading they will be, it’s an excellent start. Rep. Ros-Lehtinen, according to the above article, recognizes the tremendous problems with North Korea, and their axis of evil partner Iran.

I wanted the UN gone when we were eating Freedom Fries in the run-up to the Iraq War. At that time we were behind on our payments to them. The O caught up with those back payments, and added to them. Hopefully Rep Granger will supply them with only enough funding to make a move to another country. I suggest the outer reaches of Siberia.

What would be the ramifications of simply leaving?

Chemical Sam (Diary) Monday, December 20th at 10:19AM EST (link)

Are we not a charter member of the UN among five such nations? If any of five charter members were to leave, wouldn’t that dissolve the charter, and by default, dissolve the UN?

The UN is nothing but a liability to this nation, and with the possible exception of Korea, 50 years ago in its infancy, anything other than that? Somewhere along the line, its member nations got the idea that it can use the UN to dictate policy to other nations. I suggest we remind them who’s boss, and simply say, “You no longer have the power we gave you.”

With the one exception (international treaties approved by Congress), is the Consititution not the supreme law of the land?

I remember when we all had high hopes for the UN

Next93 (Diary) Monday, December 20th at 10:28AM EST (link)

The original goal of the UN, to prevent future wars by providing a common ground where international greivences could be discussed and negotiated, is still laudable. There was a time when the world was new and shiny that we all thought that the UN would bring about a future of worldwide peace and prosperity. Much as I dislike what the UN has (inevitably) become, I think we’re all diminished by the loss of that vision.

I say inevitably because the UN was flawed at its inception by notion that all nations deserve an equal vote has proven to be toxic; it’s hard to imagine anything as sadly laughable as a “democratic” body that represents democacies, dictatorships, thugs, and kleptocrats equally and is answerable to the people of the world only through the most tenuous of connections. Add to that fifty years of mission creep and the tendency of all bureaucracies to degenerate into an organism interested only in maintaining it’s own budget, and you have the nightmare we see today.

Given all that, I’d still like to see some sort of international body with a mission of maintaining international dialog and offering a means of international arbitration, rather than just washing our hands of the UN and walking away. Much as it pains me to say this, I think that John McCain’s idea of a league of democracies is a good starting point. The real challenge would be to structure in in such a way as to prevent it from turning into what the UN has become.

Obama was The One in 2008.

Think about it. By the time we had the U.N., the idea of a plenipotentary, a diplomat whose word carried the authority of the king, authorized to make binding deals for his or her country without calling home first – was long dead…

Shuttle diplomacy is easy enough, there’s no reason for a single place for diplomats who have to phone home anyway to meet and greet one another… and certainly no reason why we should pay for it to be in Manhattan.

It’d make some amount of sense for the Nuclear Club to have a .. clubhouse .. and the U.N. Security Council fulfilled that role for a while, but .. there’s no reason why it has to be wrapped in the ridiculous outdated trappings of the U.N. at this point … and several very good reasons (security, opportunity for frank discussion) for it not to be.

But that last paragraph seems pie-in-the-sky, just as the original plan was for establishing the UN. You do know that Alger Hiss was involved at its inception?

Why pie-in-the-sky? Look at the EU — you can’t really call it a democracy, now, can you? It’s an oligarchy and becoming less democratic daily; the oligarchy has so arranged things in Europe that in 1960 there were 600,000 muslims in all of Europe; today there are over 30 MILLION — and this was done deliberately to dilute the voice of the Europeans who were reticent about adopting statism/socialism. So the oligarchs fixed them really well, shoved their reticence up their a%$$es by importing peoples who would support the utopian dream/central government control meted out by the ruling class.

My point is that everyday there is less and less democracy around with which we can ally ourselves. Wander on over to gatesofvienna and see what’s happening in Europe that the Marxist State Media isn’t telling you about.

for the prime purpose, as the smoke and fire from WW2 cleared, *to prevent future wars. * Not nationbuilding, not administering inoculations, not distributing food. *To prevent future wars.* Supporters of the UN must admit – wont even contest – that if that was the prime purpose of starting the UN, it has failed miserably. The world has seen unending bloodshed and virtually non stop conflict everywhere on earth since 1945 and at an ever accelerating pace. It’s been as if the UN made things worse, not better. The brilliant American international lawyer and former Under Secretary of State, J. Reuben Clark, was asked during all the hoopla & high hopes during the 1945 San Francisco conference creating the UN, if it could succeed ? His un-PC, unexpected reply: “No, it will not succeed” – but for the express reason, it was chartered in 1945 to allow, as constituted, dictator and totalitarian states into its membership. Only if the UN membership were exclusive from the beginning to democracies, said he, did it stand a chance to grow & survive and serve its prime purpose. Otherwise we would get….the circus of corruption and hypocrisy we have today. This is all one really needs to know about the UN, whatever proponents say – it did not perform as designed and advertised.

On one hand I can definitely understand why you would say that we should just ditch the UN. The organization is involved with issues that it just has no business touching. Nation building is unnecessary and does not serve American interests. Economic aid should be handled through private organizations and not some centralized bureaucracy.

On the other hand it seems necessary to have some global body to tackle fundamentally global issues. The nuclear arms race is one obvious example; there are just too many players involved in modern times to rely only on bilateralism. Even if you sign bilateral agreements with a country like India, they are likely to be violated if third country Pakistan comes along and threatens India’s security. In other words there are issues where tolerance for even one large “cheating” nation is very low.

While they find cush administrative jobs for their children at the UN, which children themselves have never lived in their home countries, but maticulated through Swiss boarding schools thence to advisory jobs in NYC or Geneva. World peace? They ditched any pretense of that about a 50 years ago or more. Follow the money to understand how the UN works and what it really does. The financial benefits that the city and state would reap would be astronomical ( jobs, real estate taxes) not to mention no more traffic gridlock when foreign leaders come into town. And that ends the thousands and thousands of dollars of traffic tickets that are never paid. bay0wulf Tuesday, December 21st at 1:05PM EST (link)

The UN has been for several or … many, many … years, of very little use to the US of A and our concerns.

It has gotten our men and women of our armed forces thrown into harm’s way and then tied their hands preventing them from effectively doing their jobs and, in many cases even defending themselves.

The UN in general has become what seems to be a forum where some of the dregs of this world can come to Our Country and be supported in the lifestyle they choose and be protected by us … financially, morally and infrastructurally … while they rant and rave and castigate us and somehow make the world believe that we are the bad guys and they are the milk of human kindness.

The UN’s focus and movement have long since departed from any path that we should wish to be taking. It is well past time to revoke their lease. Revoke their mandate. Move them offshore somewhere and let them protect and provide for themselves.

Maybe Haiti could use their business?

UN is corrupt but isolation not the answer

KingstonJW (Diary) Tuesday, December 21st at 1:31PM EST (link)

The UN discussion is long and has a complex history. While I agree that the US investment is imbalanced and frustrating, I don’t think the answer is to completely defund and isolate ourselves from a forum of global discussion. Yes, it is sometimes fun to think about but ultimately not in the US best interest to not play fair in the eyes of the world.

I would suggest that the US should have an internal discussion on what we expect to get out of the UN, and adjust investment to achieve those goals. I also agree that the US should not feel obliged to financially support any UN program that does not directly support US interests.

@KingstonJW on Twitter

Not supporting the UN makes you isolationist?

RoguePolitics (Diary) Tuesday, December 21st at 2:59PM EST (link)

I don’t think so.

Supporting corrupt bastards from around the world makes you stupid.

Sitting in the same room as “friends” with people who murder their citizenry makes you one of the corrupt bastards.

Regardless what we do with Assange (I am sure hells got a seat for him), the WikiLeaks cables shows we are becoming one of the corrupt bastards.

As practically every other nation’s largest or second largest trading partner the US can hardly be isolationist. Nobody is advocating we stop trade. Just stop supporting people who hate us with “free” handouts that had to be extorted from tax paying Americans.

We get absolutely nothing of value from the UN. They offer nothing we NEED and little we want. The little we want can be had more cheaply through other less corrupt means.

Even without the corruption they HAVE nothing to offer that would contribute anything of value to the US.

Playing fair in the eyes of the world? Participate in a global forum? Pure hogwash. If we focus on doing what is right, if we practice fair trade, if we help our friends when they need it, some of the world will follow; some will go back in the cave.

Let them go.

So this is what it is like to have a discussion within a conservative audience. I’m glad I’m not a progressive, or you might be making death threats instead of just being vulgar.

First, I’d encourage you to re-read my post. I distinctly wrote that we should have a discussion on what value the UN brings to the US and then fund it appropriately. If after a discussion, the nation agrees with you, then you’ll have your answer. I don’t think; however, that your voice is the sole arbiter.

I was also clear that the US should NOT feel obliged to support any UN program not in US interests. So where is your confusion?

I have a sense that your passion has gotten in the way of listening, but good luck with your point of view. Your rude rhetoric certainly has not encouraged me to consider otherwise.

@KingstonJW on Twitter

I am tired of being called an isolationist because I favor dumping the corrupt dictators out in the cold.

RoguePolitics (Diary) Tuesday, December 21st at 4:03PM EST (link)

Labeling somebody an isolationist is meant to belittle them into supporting your position out of fear of being considered backward or ignorant (Oh don’t mind him he is an isolationist) is just as repugnant as playing the race card.

The UN has never DONE anything for the US that couldn’t have been done by the US without the UN and done better without them.

So your question regarding funding for the UN according to what it actually does for us is both asked and answered.

2011 UN dues budget $0 and get the hell out of our country.

“I’m glad I’m not a progressive, or you might be making death threats instead of just being vulgar.”
You may not be a progressive but your strawman looks like a progressive strawman. Where was my threat of anything?

If you are going to use innuendo and implication you have to expect some people will take offense and respond in kind.

the thing about a conservative audience, if you are still around – we tend to know history and remember things. Sure there is a lot of theoretical potential that a UN like body supported by a multiple of nations could do – and I understand the revulsion for war felt in 1945. But the slimy reality of how things have turned out with the UN, cannot be ignored. And it just won’t get any better because of the people in it. That is reality.

I was made aware of this back in the '90's - the UN at work

myron_j_poltroonian Tuesday, December 21st at 7:11PM EST (link)

“Consequence Management Response Force” and “Non-Traditional Missions” According to the McAlvany Intelligence Advisor, on July 7, 1994, Larry Pratt, Director of Gun Owners of America, sent the following memo to Don McAlvany: “An actual copy of the questionnaire being administered on a Marine Base in 29 Palms, Ca. has come into our possession. It asks soldiers if they would obey U.N. officers and if they would confiscate firearms from American citizens and shoot those who resist. The latter point is corroborated by several Navy Seals who have personally reported that they have been asked the same questions. Congressman Bob Dornan has been asked to, and is considering launching a full scale investigation into the government using American (or U.N.) troops to disarm civilians.”

Under the heading, “Combat Arms Survey,” the questionnaire stated: “This questionnaire is to gather data concerning the attitudes of combat trained personnel with regards to non-traditional missions.” Two of the questions asked are:

(1) I would swear to the following code: ‘I am a United Nations fighting person. I serve in the forces which maintain world peace and every nation’s way of life, I am prepared to give my life in their defense.’

(2) The United States government declares a ban on the possession, sale, transportation, and transfer of all non-sporting firearms. A thirty (30) day amnesty period is permitted for these firearms to be turned over to the local authorities. At the end of this period, a number of citizen groups refuse to turn over their firearms. Consider the following statement:

`I would fire upon U.S. citizens who refuse or resist confiscation of firearms banned by the U.S. government.’

A press release from the Navy says, “The survey is an academic endeavor and does not reflect any government program, policy or initiative.” Sure and the earth is also flat, just ask the Navy.

This is exactly the use & purpose of our glorious Constitution, the Supreme Law of the Land, answerable to no other earthly law or regime./nt/

Adding Insult To Injury

Have any of you seen this? (Link to: http//:www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8ltm3ZrRB8&feature=player_embedded ) I call this piece, “The Price of Freedom”. The price of freedom is never free. And yet, we, America, keep paying it. It’s evidently a thankless task, as it seems no one ever says “Thank You, America”. Not, anyway, anyone in charge of the government whose people we rescue from whatever tyranny or tragedy has befallen them. Whether in and/or external murderous oppression, or some devastating natural disaster, we as swiftly as possible answer their pleas, go in and try and set things aright. Our reward is to be disrespected in the United Nations, voted down at every opportunity and held up for ever more financial gifts masquerading as “Aid”. Adding insult to injury, whatever goods we send are usually relabeled with UN labels so the people who receive our largess are not even aware of the origin of the meager remnants of the UN pilfered aid we send.
