Sen. Hatch had a conference call on Monday on two bills that he’s introduced in the Senate (the American Job Protection Act and the American Liberty Restoration Act) to remove, respectively, the employer mandate and the individual mandate from Obamacare. Below is my portion of the Q&A period:
To summarize: I asked how we were going to get these bills passed in the 111th Congress, and Senator Hatch was forthright in replying that he doesn’t expect that we will. But it’s still very important that we keep the Democrats’ feet to the fire, particularly since we will be in a better position in the 112th Congress to gut Obamacare; so let that be a motivator.
Indeed. Let it.

There are few things more depressing
romeg Tuesday, June 22nd at 8:08PM EST (link)than to listen to someone for whom I have the deepest respect and affection say things like “there’s no chance of getting this thing repealed”.
When upwards of 70% of the electorate is opposed to an piece of legislation then there is NO EXCUSE for a member of the United Sates Senate to surrender without so much as a whimper.
Senator Hatch’s problem is that he is just too nice a guy to take on his “Liberal Friends” in the opposition party let alone his own party. Well if HE won’t take them on the electorate SHOULD take them on. If Barney Frank’s district can vote for Scott Brown then there is NO reason that we cannot purge the Congress of their most liberal members.
Unless the federal government is restored to it originally intended limited status this nation is doomed to become another Europe or worse.
“Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.” – C. S. Lewis
Don't agree but concur - not too nice, just tired
cactusjack Tuesday, June 22nd at 10:07PM EST (link)If we all don’t remember, should have seen him in action 10 years ago. I think he’s just tired now after so many fights in the good fight. He was the scrappiest R trench fighter on that Judiciary Committee, taking on and usually outmaneuvering Biden, Kennedy, Leahy, etal. If you like where Thomas is today (SCOTUS), or Oliver North (not in jail), in large part you have the man in the video above, to thank. He took a lot of bullet holes for our side because he kept getting returned to the Senate when others on both sides, except him, Biden and Kennedy, didn’t. . I can’t explain the Ginsburg thing, maybe it was the first sign of battle fatigue. Hopefully folks in Utah will send Lee now and and a replacement can be groomed for Hatch when his term is up.
My friend, I got my head torn off here by several for pushing for repeal pre-passage, and i agree with Sen. Hatch
avgjo (Diary) Tuesday, June 22nd at 9:31PM EST (link)The question was of repeal in the 111th Congress. This is important; this will be the congress under the (hopefully) lame duck Obama. In the 112th Congress, when we consolidate our majorities and throw this piece of Communist trash we call a president out of the White House, then repeal will be possible, and, I believe, probable.
Ceterum autem censeo, Obamaecuram esse delendam.
Hatch was a force

you do realize what repeal would take right?
amendment10 Wednesday, June 23rd at 1:24AM EST (link)There is no “fight” to be had here. You need to override a presidential veto of any legislation you might pass, which would be impossible unless you had control of the house and the senate.
To override a veto requires a 2/3 vote in each house. Suffice to say, this cannot be repealed until there is a Republican president who will sign repeal legislation that is passed by a congress controlled by Republicans so they can bring the legislation to the floor for a vote. As long as Democrats control any one of those three things, repeal is not possible.
And that is not happening until at least 2013 if a Republican manages to oust Obama and Republicans also hold both houses of congress.
So Hatch was simply being realistic, I think that is what conservatives value most. And no, I’m no Hatch fan, being from Utah, but I’m very encouraged by how active he has been since he realized Bob Bennett was done. He’s acting like an adult, I appreciate that, aren’t you sick to death of all the damn spoiled children talking pie in the sky nonsense 24/7 in our current administration? Anyone talking like an adult these days is a breath of fresh air.
If the Republicans gain at least one branch of Congress,
SoFiMil (Diary) Wednesday, June 23rd at 1:32AM EST (link)I hope to see a repeal bill pass at least in the House. Even though it will be voted down by the Senate (or if the Republicans can take 10 in 2010, vetoed by Obama). Just to do it. It;s the principle of the thing.
