The primary results are in for the Massachusetts special election primary, and it’s Massachusetts AG Martha Coakley for the Democrats; State Senator Scott Brown for the Republicans. 10% turnout; special election on January 19th .
Coakley, of course, is cookie-cutter: as Jim Geraghty put it, the Democratic side was “lefty vs. lefty vs. lefty vs. lefty.” Scott Brown’s a bit more interesting, given that he’s running on strong opposition to cap-and-trade, and as a fiscal conservative. His opponent in the primary wanted “a Paris peace conference to negotiate with the Taliban:” enough said.
Come, I will hide nothing from you. Brown’s status-quo on abortion; he’s not going past supporting parental consent/notification laws, and banning partial-birth abortion. This would make him unacceptably squishy in, say, Kansas or Montana. But this is Massachusetts, where the bar is not so much low as it is recessed into the floor – so ask yourself if Mass. is worth a pass on this. Personally, I can live with it… particularly since losing Ted Kennedy’s seat would panic Democrats from Bangor to San Diego, Seattle to Key West, and everywhere in between.

MA vs EPA
paulb (Diary) Wednesday, December 9th at 1:27PM EST (link)That decision by Lisa Jackson to regulate CO2 to save mankind, well Americans at least. Was only possible because MA Attorney General Martha Coakley sued the feds to force them to regulate it. That, and the 5 Supremes who overturned the lower courts that decided against her.
Republicans nationwide need to send Scott Brown the money to make this a competitive race. A Senator that supports a ban on partial birth abortion and is for parental notification would be a huge improvement for MA and the nation.
I would also add, he doesn’t support the nationalization of healthcare. His win denies Harry Reid his 60 vote supermajority.
Please, Please, Please
nolan Wednesday, December 9th at 9:26PM EST (link)Help us here in MA. I was not surprised by the discrepancies in the voter turnout yesterday; i.e. 500k + for D’s vs. @120k for R’s. I thought it might be indicative of the sad state of affairs for the MA (R) party, but I’m thinking/hoping it may be that Brown’s opponent was a such a joke and most R’s stayed home, whereas the D’s had a real race.
We need this guy for SOOOO many reasons!

Scott Brown
CarolT (Diary) Wednesday, December 9th at 10:49PM EST (link)We do need national attention to this race and help from other states. We can win this with Brown, Coakley is supported by Emily’s list etc.
He is not going to vote for Cap & Tax and healthcare reform. That alone should get us some help here. We need Scott in the US Senate. This could be the start of overturning the incumbents. Coakley is a hack, as AG she did not do a thing about any of the corrupt pols that have been indicted.
Diane Wilkerson, Sal DiMasi( third speaker of house indicted) etc. There are too many to list.
It was Coakley holding up the “terrorist” device that had people in Boston in a panic two or three years ago, it was a cartoon, not terrorism. Need I add to this?
Scott Brown
CarolT (Diary) Wednesday, December 9th at 10:52PM EST (link)Another thing, according to Boston Globe poll, Brown is at 61% vs Coakley an hour or so ago. Boston Globe readers are lemmings, NY Times owns it, I’m sure most of you know that.
Judging from the response to this diary, Moe,
The_Rebel (Diary) Wednesday, December 9th at 10:55PM EST (link)I don’t expect Scott Brown to get much support from the NRSC, let alone from the grassroots. I guess just about everyone writes off any Republican Senate candidate from Massachusetts. Why, even the local media wrote him off last night.
In the middle of his acceptance speech, all of the local TV stations switched to Coakley’s campaign headquarters so that we could hear John Kerry’s long-winded introduction to Martha Coakley for her acceptance speech, which was covered in full. Too bad we never got to hear all of Brown’s vision for the future.
All the more reason we need help because we’re certainly not going to get it from the media. Here is one vote for Scott Brown on January 19, 2010.
I think we do need a big snow storm to hit Mass.
Richard Mullins (Diary) Wednesday, December 9th at 11:08PM EST (link)That should take a lot of Democrats out of the voting. We still need a money bomb to happen although that seems to not be happening. We are dooming ourselves to the same results if we don’t make this happen.

Let’s Bankrupt the Democratic paty. Make spend all the money to defend thier candidates.
I'll be in that voting booth January 19th
The_Rebel (Diary) Wednesday, December 9th at 11:13PM EST (link)even if we get a blizzard. I don’t think you will hear many Democrats saying that for Coakley. Half of her union support would be out plowing the roads.
That wouldn't stop them from voting early and often.
Achance (Diary) Wednesday, December 9th at 11:15PM EST (link)I’ll bet their labor agreements have a specific provision mandating that they be given time off to vote, snowplowing or not.

I want KSM to be an issue.
shadowtax (Diary) Wednesday, December 9th at 11:11PM EST (link)Coakley is the AG. Brown is a JAG. This sounds like the perfect campaign in which to have a debate regarding civil trials for terrorist combatants.

Great link on that story.
The_Rebel (Diary) Wednesday, December 9th at 11:35PM EST (link)I remember the whole history of that case. Unfortunately, this story will never see the light of day in this short campaign.
you know I read the whole case history and remember the era...
DONTREADONME (Diary) Wednesday, December 9th at 11:50PM EST (link)of the whole sexual molestation hysteria, I was a kid at the time. This was a horrible story, and the (in)justice handed down by the courts in the decisions, excluding one judge, were awful!
NRSC leaves Scott Brown high and dry
Adrian Tuesday, December 29th at 8:28AM EST (link)According to the Boston Herald http://bostonherald.com/news/politics/view/20091229gop_lets_scott_brown_fend_for_himself_local_republicans_outraged_committee_not_giving_more_in_senate_battle/srvc=home&position=0
The National Republican Senatorial Committee is leaving Scott Brown to fend for himself in terms of campaign dollars, feeling that it isn’t worth the effort to attempt to pick up Ted’s old seat.
The committee threw cash at both Mitt Romney and Bill Weld when they ran much tougher races against Kennedy and John Kerry respectively, so it can’t be the odds they’re worried about. Brown has a hard fight against Attorney General Martha Coakley, but even here in MA, voters are angry. Republicans have a real chance to win a senate seat but the NRSC isn’t even willing to try.
The MA special election for US Senator is on Jan. 19 and Brown needs help right now to have a fighting chance.
