Obama Speech Breakdown

Counting the president's words to assess his priorities.

President Obama’s much hyped Oval Office address on the Gulf oil disaster is being roundly criticized from the left and the right as lacking in substance and leadership on the spill but full of presidential inaction on the cleanup. An analysis of the number of words the president devoted to the four general topics of the speech shows that the critics are right.

The problem seems to be in Obama’s priorities, as the word count shows. This was not a speech about the oil spill, the aftermath, or recovery in the Gulf. It was largely a sales pitch for Obama’s “green energy” agenda.

Obama spoke close to 2,700 words in his first Oval Office address, which can be separated into four broad themes: an update the oil spill and clean up efforts; the impact on the Gulf region; a history of regulatory ineffectiveness (Bush bashing); and the case for his “green energy” agenda.

Here is how the sections breakdown in words spoken on each:

• 345 words blaming Bush
• 418 words on the impact to Gulf region
• 778 words on the oilspill and cleanup efforts
863 words on Obama’s “green energy” agenda

Clearly, the president’s number one priority in making this speech was to make the case for his high tax, command and control, lifestyle changing, carbon regulating energy plan.

Moreover, Obama placed his 863 words on “green energy” at the end of his address. In so doing, the president orgnized the speech on the principles of inductive logic – in which the bad news comes first in order to soften the impact of the proposed solution. Everything which comes before his pitch for “green energy” is properly seen, then, as support for Obama’s proposal. The crisis, the impact, the lives of those affected, all props in Obama’s drive to remake the nation’s energy policy.

Last night, Obama revealed himself to be nothing more than a snake-oil salesman. He knows that the public does not want his energy-limiting scheme, but he is determined to force it on America using the worst environmental tragedy in the nation’s history as the hook. Never let a crisis go to waste.

I’m betting, however, the Statist green goober tax-and-cripple will be implemented by the lame-duck congress, and they’ll claim to the dullards on the left “Hey, it worked! We passed the energy tax and the seas aren’t rising, more polar bears than ever, etc..”

It is a pure crock of %$*# foisted on the productive by the moochers.

I like to point out to the goobers that indeed there are more polar bears dying than ever before (because their population numbers are much greater; Yes kids, GREATER! Than ever) More bears live: More bears die.

I’ll bet there are more people dying every day right here in the good ol’ USA than ever before.

Can I blame global warming?

Matthews said, after the SOTU address, that it was so good, he forgot Obama was black. So, does that mean that you didn’t forget he was black after last nights speech Chrissie? Gee you are are slow learner Mr. Matthews, but, at least you are now owning up to your stupidity.

I guess Matthews remembered Obama was black...

The Opposite of Greatness

teapartypatriot Wednesday, June 16th at 2:22PM EST (link)

Great Words of Presidential Leadership:

FDR: “We have nothing to fear….”
JFK: “Ask not what your country can do for you….”
Ronald Reagan, America’s greatest modern president: “Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall.”

In contrast to greatness, we now have hussein’s pathetic whine about the disaster in the Gulf: “I can’t suck it up with a straw.”

Thanks to hussein, jimmy carter is now the SECOND WORST president in modern American history.

Maybe Not With a Straw, but With Skimmers

mcb508 (Diary) Wednesday, June 16th at 5:36PM EST (link)

President Obama said “I can’t suck it up with a straw” but he could have accepted the Dutch offer of Skimmers that could suck 20,000 tons of oil out of the water per day. However, he refused their help and the help of 13 other nations. He could have reversed course and accept the help last night but he didn’t. He could have immediately approved Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal’s request to build 24 sand barriers along the Louisiana cost. He has only approved six. There is boom sitting in warehouses and skimmers in other parts of the country sitting idle. Yet he says he is doing all he can. Really?

It gets worse...

MacAoidh (Diary) Wednesday, June 16th at 8:27PM EST (link)

…Jindal and some of the state and local folks in Louisiana came up with a jury-rigged system of vacuum barges to suction oil out of the marsh, and they’ve been at it about a week.

Along comes the Coast Guard yesterday and puts a stop to it because they haven’t safety-certified these vacuum barges.

They’re hoping to get them back in the water by the end of the week.

where there are private people trying to suck up the oil with “shop-vacs.”

Am I wrong, or has Thad Allen not been as forthcoming as he was in the beggining? My husband and I had this discussion tonight. Every military person takes an oath to uphold the Constitution of the US. The President takes an oath to uphold the Constitution of the US. The President is the commander of the armed forces. So, if the Pres. is not upholding the Constitution of the US, where does that leave the military? Thad Allen is following the directions of the O. He is getting less honest with his answers. He claimed that he had no knowledge of the Boom material available, even though the Boom manufacturer had contacted him. What is the correct answer here? I’m confused. I would never in my life have believed that a higher up in the military would lie or deceive the people that he is supposed to protect.

Scope (Diary) Wednesday, June 16th at 2:27PM EST (link)

Obama said “we consume more than 20% of the world’s oil, but have less than 2% of the world’s oil reserves.” I was reminded of that lie when reading an American Thinker article-

http://www.americanthinker.com/2010/06/the_presidents_oil_reserves_li.html

Also, I thought what we had was resources not “reserves.” Shouldn’t the President of the USA know the difference?

Nonsense

Thomas_Hauber Wednesday, June 16th at 2:57PM EST (link)

You expect someone who was a community organizer to understand a business term? You must be new hear.

We have a president with ZERO experience in the real world. He could not run a lemonade stand unless someone held his hand.

2012 cannot come soon enough.

Thomas Hauber- It is not a business term

Scope (Diary) Wednesday, June 16th at 10:13PM EST (link)

It is a universal term, across all spheres.

No, I am not new “hear.” I believe I have passed the driver’s exam on RS, or, at least, I have gotten my permit. I usually do abide by the 11 PM permit rules. I’m hoping to graduate to full license status in the near future.

Now, I agree with you that the O has no necessary experience. But, I do not find him incompetent. He knows exactly what he is doing. It just isn’t what the American people want. He will find that out though, between 2010 and 2012.

That was when I lost it...

MacAoidh (Diary) Wednesday, June 16th at 8:31PM EST (link)

…what Obama refuses to recognize is that as much as he’s bitching about the oil spill, that well represents one of the most incredible oil finds in human history. The record well in the Gulf is 40,000 barrels a day and this one’s putting out AT LEAST THAT.

Maybe it’s not easy to get to the oil, but don’t tell me we’re running out of the stuff. Looks to me like we’ve underestimated what we have access to.

And every time we explore an oil prospect, we find more and more of the stuff through increased technology.

Our problem isn’t that we don’t have oil. Our problem is that idiots like Obama won’t let us go get it.

In the 60's, they predicted we'd be out of food by the 80's.

roscopico (Diary) Wednesday, June 16th at 11:41PM EST (link)

I picked up an old college text published in the late 1960′s titled “Resources and Man”. Pretty heady stuff, and quite cutting edge for the time.

My top-of-the-head synopsis:

Peak oil in the 1980′s
Seas fished out sometime in the 1980′s
All arable land in production, but not enough to sustain the world population (after all; the seas are dead)

It looks like now (with “peak oil”), just as then, thar’s money in them thar hills (of doom)

We didn’t fish out the sea, and we can feed everybody, and peak oil is on the ropes.

Why do we need windmills again? Something to tilt at?

He's frustrated because he cares about the "small people",

tngal (Diary) Wednesday, June 16th at 6:34PM EST (link)

If anything sounded more disconnected from the problem than Obama’s speech yestrerday, it was Carl-Henric Svanberg’s speech today. Svanberg is the chairman of BP. At first it seemed he was having difficulty with the nuances of the English language, but his small people comment almost caused me to wreck when I heard it on the radio. Came in and found the quote on Politico.

“He’s frustrated because he cares about the small people, and we care about the small people,” Svanberg said of Obama. “I hear comments that sometimes large oil companies are greedy companies that don’t care. But that is not the case with BP. We care about the small people.”

Maybe Svanberg does have a good grasp of the language after all. Obama always does come off as a bit arrogant, even in yesterday’s bit of lackluster bluster.

Wait a second tngal

Scope (Diary) Wednesday, June 16th at 7:44PM EST (link)

It seems that the word “small” is being used against Svanberg using it. Believe me I am not a BP apolgist, but, are us “little” people calling ourselves “little” people that out elitist government doesn’t care about? I consider myself a “small people” nonetity that the O admin. wants to tell me what to do, how to live my life and etc. Isn’t the theme of the Tea Parties about “the little people”? That’s all of us outside the beltway.

Hey, Obama was looking for some BP “ass to kick.” Today BP went to the Oval Office, and kissed his ass instead. Legally, they were not required to set up any escrow account, and especially to be administered by the federal government, it really is not a third party. Even more, they set up a trust of $100 million to pay lost wages of the deepwater rig workers, from all 33 rigs, no matter what oil company, even though it was the federal government that put the moratorium in place, and all those out of work. There is surely more here than what we are hearing. Does the O have that much power, from somewhere, that he can bring a major international corporation to it’s knees? Why?

Seems that all those thousands of jobs that were lost will now not affect the unemployment numbers. That would be a bad thing for the November 2010 election season for all the O enablers.

If the $100mm fund in any way depopulates the incipient, forming

cactusjack Wednesday, June 16th at 8:32PM EST (link)

class action suit, or allows BP to point people to it instead of setting up claim centers on the ground and starting the settlement process one on one, then in the long run, Obama may have just been had by BP Not ascribing bad faith to BP, it was always known as a company that preferred to settle fast and pay out up front like a good guy, instead of litigating (Exxon Valdez-style) until Hell freezes over. Just saying the 0 trying to jump out and look good, may not have done what is in the best interest of the federal government, of whom he is chief executive.

cactusjack- I disagree

Scope (Diary) Wednesday, June 16th at 9:26PM EST (link)

“Just saying the 0 trying to jump out and look good, may not have done what is in the best interest of the federal government, of whom he is chief executive.” Ummmm, duhhh. On RS, that is equivalent to saying that people have 10 fingers, and, 10 toes. No new news there.

As far as any money promised on behalf of BP, it will be controlled by this federal government. If anyone has been deceived, it would be the people that have suffered the loses, and, the 40% shareholders in the US. When have you ever seen any federal government person, or controlling appointees, to be able or willing to administer “any” program? I wonder how much of that money will go to bureaucrats, recently appointed commissions, Democrat candidate campaigns, and other “nefarious” individuals. That is apparently exactly what happened in the Katrina debacle, when it really was on the taxpayer’s dime. If this effort was on the up and up, it would truly have been administered by someone way way outside the federal government. BP should have insisted on a true independent party, for administration. This was another money grab, by the biggest money grabbers in history. As I said elsewhere, the O wanted some BP ass to kick, and, today they went to DC, and kissed the messiah’s ass.

Years down the road, the Obama and BP marriage will be disclosed.

Thinking about it Scope...

cactusjack Wednesday, June 16th at 9:44PM EST (link)

hmmm, thinking about your post- will respond….meanwhile, an interesting factoid. I am sure BP has contributed tons of money to Obama since he’s been a Senator. How do I know? An interesting accident of business history and geography. BP’s biggest acquisition of another oil company in recent history, was the 1998 takeover of Amoco, the old Standard Oil of Indiana. It was a very large fish and increased BP’s total market cap substantially. Guess where Amoco was headquartered? Chicago. Oil companies are like other large industries, they may have favorite candidates on particular issues but they make lawful campaign $$ contributions to both sides of the street, even opposing candidates, and even to candidates who are bitter enemies of Big Oil. Think of it as passive protection money in the case of their enemies. I just can’t imagine for the life of me why some good MSM reporter hasn’t investigated the amounts and timing of $$ contributions from BP to Obama over the last 4 or 5 years?

what? wait..munchkin land?

tngal (Diary) Wednesday, June 16th at 9:02PM EST (link)

You are not small people, Scope. None of us are. If we view ourselves as small or little just because we’re outside the beltway then we’re propagating their silly myth of “We’re better than you. We’re politicians and we’ll do what we decide is best for you ” You’re not small. Your taxes pay their salary so you’re the boss, which in my book makes you just as important as Mr. BP chairman. He may control a company but you, my dear Scope (with some help fom a few million friends) are taking back control of this country.

” ….And in the name of the Lollipop guild, we want to welcome you to munchkin land”

tngal- I guess the proper term would

Scope (Diary) Wednesday, June 16th at 10:32PM EST (link)

not be small, little or munchkin. I guess the term I’m looking for is the everyday folks. My point was that the term “small” I really believe was more an everyday folks term, but, didn’t translate well. Again, I am not an apologist for BP, but, I really do believe he meant the everyday folks. If he was sincere is another thing, but I don;t have a problem with the language. And, the everyday folks most assuredly do have the upper hand now, and, I am very proud to be a part of the not-in-the-beltway majority. Actually, if I could go to DC with a switch in hand……….I’ll save that for my dreams tonight.
