Do They Even Want School Shootings to Stop?

Townhall Media/Julio Rosas

America has seen yet another tragic school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, and the Democrats are doing their typical “Let’s politicize the hell out of this massacre” routine. High-profile leftists in government and the activist media are making their usual calls for gun laws that would not have stopped the shooting while demonizing the right and anyone who values gun rights as frothing-at-the-mouth barbarians who celebrate when children are killed.

Social media became a digital cesspool only moments after news of the shooting hit the airwaves and interwebs when Democrats began exploiting the dead elementary school children to attack their political opposition. Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) took the opportunity to lash out at Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Twitter, calling him a “baby killer.”

Various celebrities also took to social media to villainize those who understand that further restricting firearms won’t stop school shootings. Noted gun violence expert Alyssa Milano used profanity at various members of Congress and asked “HOW MANY CHILDREN HAVE TO DIE?”

World-renown gun policy scholar Rob Reiner also chimed in, claiming the GOP is responsible for the deaths of children killed by firearms:

Rosanna Arquette, an expert on the Second Amendment, accused Trump Republicans of not caring about children:

President Joe Biden also got into the act the night of the shooting. While addressing the nation about the assault, he referenced the massacre at Sandy Hook and expressed sympathy for the parents of the children who were murdered. “To lose a child is like having a piece of your soul ripped away,” he said.

Then, he took the opportunity to lay the blame at the feet of the “gun lobby” and push for more useless gun control measures. “When in God’s name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby?” he bloviated. “Why are we willing to live with this carnage?”

Amid the national conversation over gun control, the anti-gun crowd has tried to focus the conversation on evil conservatives who somehow caused the shooting in Uvalde and the white supremacist terrorist attack in Buffalo, New York. They continue to insist on imposing a ban on “assault weapons” and ask why anyone needs an AR-15. In other words, they simply followed their programming.

But, as always, there is one thing missing from their asinine diatribes: Actual solutions.

So far, no high-profile anti-gunner has suggested legislation or policy that would have prevented the shooting in Uvalde from occurring. Not a single one has recommended any measure that would decrease school shootings and save lives.

It’s not that such solutions don’t exist. They have been suggested ad nauseam by folks who understand that gun laws won’t work. My friend Darvio Morrow suggested heightened security measures similar to what are used in inner-city schools – which rarely experience school shootings like what occurred in Texas. I made the same argument years ago after the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting.

There might be even more steps school districts can take to prevent the deaths of children in their classrooms. But none of these are coming from the left. This causes cynical folks like myself to wonder if they even want to stop these shootings. After all, if they are really as heartbroken as they want us to believe, why do they continue pushing for measures that they know will not prevent mass shootings? They have to know that banning AR-15s won’t stop people from using these weapons – or others – to target children in schools, so why waste valuable airtime trying to scare the public into adopting such a useless proposition?

Perhaps they are not so gung-ho about stopping these atrocities as it seems.

To be clear, I’m not talking about the everyday person who votes Democrat. These people are either duped into believing this foolishness because they are misinformed, or they don’t actually buy what the anti-Second Amendment folks are selling.

But when it comes to left-leaning members of the chattering class, it is clear that most of them know better. While it is not always possible to tell what is in a person’s mind, their actions and words typically make it clear. When shootings like what happened in Uvalde occur, these people seek only to use the tragedy to push for gun control measures that they already wanted to put in place before the shooting. These incidents are merely a means to an end – a travesty to exploit for political purposes. Unfortunately, this only means that America will be seeing more of these senseless tragedies in the years to come.
