If you don’t remember much about the debate surrounding the passage of The Affordable Care Act, it’s not a big deal. Most people don’t remember much about it. Many people who followed it closely do remember one particular moment that came from then Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi.
Many Republicans said the behemoth bill was not worth supporting because hardly anybody knew what it said. It was being rammed through via the reconciliation process, requiring only a simple majority for it to pass. Pelosi famously said the following in response:
“But we have to pass the bill so you can find out what’s in it.”
