Right now in America, the people of this great nation are staring down the loaded barrel of government-run healthcare. If this bill passes, it is no less than the end of America as we know it. You know it. Most Americans knows it.
Yet the people most in a position to do anything about it right now – Senate Republicans – are doing absolutely nothing. If anything, they actually are HELPING Democrats by offering amendments to “highlight problems in the bill,” giving the Democrats the opportunity to produce “cover votes.”
Consider the comments of the number two Senate Republican, Jon Kyl, yesterday on Bill Bennett’s radio show, being hosted by Rick Santorum (hat tip to mayhem in comments of one of Erick’s post, here). In response to the question, “what is your strategy, to the extent you can share it,” Kyl said, “actually, I think we can be fairly upfront about it. Our strategy is not actually to delay and not take votes.” He added, “our strategy is to have a lot of good amendments and highlight the problems in the bill,” and “it is not our strategy to somehow slow things down.”
This is what happens when Senators sit around their offices with overpaid, but largely incompetent staff in fancy rooms scattered about the Capitol – and they listen to pollsters and political strategists talking about how unpopular this bill is, but stressing that Republicans “need to be for something.”
Senator Kyl continued, spending several minutes detailing the GOP strategy to improve the bill with amendments. But, then, the Jon Kyl that we usually applaud conceded that it was simply not possible to improve a bill that at its core allows a government takeover of health care.
On the show, he said, “it is the guts of this bill that’s the problem,” Kyl told Santorum. “These guys [the Democrats] will come back and say, ‘Oh, we fixed this and we fixed that and so on.’ But did you fix the guts of the bill?” “I do not want constituents, wherever they are, to let their senators off the hook on the guts of the bill.”
Right. So, use very tool at your disposal to kill it.
There are two possible strategies to kill this bill. 1. Force a vote as soon as possible to try to deny Democrats the opportunity to build 60 votes. 2. Delay, obstruct and fight – using every parliamentary tactic in the book – such as forcing a reading of the bill, offering strategic amendments, etc… – and try to build up so much public opposition that Democrats cannot get 60 votes. The tools for this strategy were outlined by Senator Judd Gregg, but this is being ignored in favor of “messaging amendments” (code for: we don’t have a plan, so let’s offer “messaging amendments” even though we have no actual message, instead of useful, divisive amendments that might actually be a poison pill).
The current strategy is not a strategy at all. It’s a gutless, foolish exercise in Senate-itis… a deadly disease inflicting many, where people who have been on Capitol Hill for too long begin listening to themselves and their tired, hack staff… drinking their own Koolaid, if I may say it… happy to sit back and enjoy their supposedly improving popularity in the polls as a result of anti-Obama sentiment, and the supposed great forecast for 2010 elections…
As a result, Republicans are playing into Democrat hands – and America will be the big loser.

The Federal government needs its wings clipped. It’s well past time to return the bulk of power back to the states where politicians are more accountable to the people they represent.
What makes me so mad at the Democrats is not that they’re trying to push nationalization of health care but that they know We the People don’t want it but are forging ahead in spite of what we want. I sometimes feel like I’m being stalked by someone intent upon enslaving me.
We Red state conservatives will NOT become anyone’s indentured servant nor dragged involuntarily into socialism. I wish I could get that through the thick skulls in DC.

Kyle-MI (Diary) Friday, December 4th at 5:00PM EST (link)Reality is that they cannot stop it by themselves. They do not have the votes to do (or stop) anything. The Democrats have COMPLETE control. States need to nullify Obamacare of passed and we need to start sending that message more strongly that we don’t need the Federalists telling the states what to do when the people are so strong against it. Remember, they work for us not the other way around. Too many people have died fighting for our Freedom to let Obama and his liberals make us a socialist Country. Most everything they have done for 11 months now has been against the people and 180 degrees of just the opposite of what should have been done. Challenge to the Republican Party and its Senate Caucus: This is Your Moment
Time for our Senators to “Man Up” and kill the health care reform bill
Republican Senators:
Sixty-five years ago this month, against all odds a group of determined Americans held out against an onslaught of an army of tyranny and changed history. This is your moment in history.
In December of 1944, the German Army mounted a huge counter-offensive to capture the port of Antwerp, Belgium; this was to become known as the Battle of the Bulge. In defense of this counter-offensive, brave soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division were given the mission of holding the key crossroads at the Belgian city of Bastogne.
This heroic “band of brothers” fought with everything in them. They were light infantry against armor. They did not have winter uniforms. They ran short of ammunition and food. Due to the weather, the Air Force could not help them. Cooks, typists, engineers all fought. Yet outnumbered, outgunned and cutoff, they sustained the fight, they endured, they persevered, and they held that crossroads until relief came. Because of their great courage, they proudly earned the title of the “battered bastards of Bastogne”.
The current health care reform bill is a legislative assault of tyranny on our great country and must be defeated by you.
Just as the 101st had to fight in the fog, cold, and snow, so too shall you have to fight in the midst of an antagonistic Washington Press Corps and Mainstream Media, that will provide you with no rest or cover. You too must overcome in your environment.
Just as the Third Army, led by General Patton, brought much needed relief to the 101st and helped save the day, so too shall the American people bring relief to you on November 2nd, 2010 – just look at the polls, the Tea Party movement, and remember what they did in the elections in Virginia and New Jersey. But you must fight and persist until then – you must hold this crossroads.
This bill is not a piece of rawhide that can be tooled into fine leather; rather it is a steaming, stinking pile of warm manure. It cannot be improved with any number of amendments – there is just too much wrong with it. Its individual mandates, higher taxes, higher deficits, and bigger government are all counter to Republican, really American, core principles. You must fight this bill with all your might, grit, and cunning and use every delay tactic, parliamentary procedure, legislative maneuver, and only offer amendments that serve to divide the Democrat Caucus and delay the bill’s progress.
I can only hope and pray that you are willing to fight for and earn the moniker of the “battered bastards of the 111th Congress” for holding this crossroads. This crossroads in American history is between liberty and tyranny, free-markets and socialism, the individual and the government. This is a decisive battle and if the Republican Party is truly interested in regaining the faith, trust, and confidence of the American people, then you must make your stand now and fight.
May God bless you and the United States of America.

Mayhem (Diary) Friday, December 4th at 5:40PM EST (link)when I heard Kyl make that comment to Rick Santorum yesterday. Erick had been warning us for several weeks that he was seeing signs of weakness in the Senate GOP strategy. Kyl’s comments just confirmed that.
There are good men in the Senate who “get it.” I do not understand why the Coburns and the DeMints aren’t utilizing Judd Gregg’s strategy memo. Even if the leadership is poo-pooing flashy delay tactics, so what? Screw the leadership. This is our country. This may be our last chance to save it. Each Senator reserves the right to delay, and the Senators who understand the evil in this bill should be delaying every day the floor is open.
James Madison, Jim DeMint, Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan… You get the picture.
To play Devil's advocate a bit...
clowngirl (Diary) Saturday, December 5th at 10:24PM EST (link)It doesn’t seem like the amendments that have been passed are really game changers that will cause Nelson or Lieberman to get on board and they’ve burned through most of their first week back.
I freely acknowledge that Erick and probably most people at Redstate are more informed than I am about killing a bill. I didn’t closely follow the demise of the immigration bill which RSers have said was killed because Republicans refused to improve it but I can’t help wondering if that would’ve still been possible if Democrats had had a filibuster proof majority.
Looking at the last week I see lots of reasons for optimism:
1. The amendments that have been passed are not – as far as I can see – game changers and Democrats need a game changer.
Didn’t Nelson vote against the amendment that guaranteed preventive women’s health care because it didn’t exclude abortion? And isn’t he still saying that covering abortion is a deal breaker for him?
2. Nelson and Webb voted in favor of the McCain amendment – granted, they probably knew it wasn’t going to pass, but if they are willing to vote for Obamacare to go back to the finance committee, maybe they’ll also be willing to vote against cloture.
3. They’ve already burned up a week without much progress.
Regarding Kyl’s remarks – I don’t see how he can openly say ‘ yes, we’re trying to stall the bill. We don’t care what improvements are made to it, we want to kill it. period. In fact, we want to stop all of Obama’s agenda whether he’s willing to work with us or not.” If he’s openly an obstructionist, it would give Obama and the Democrats a valuable distracton and an excuse to just dismiss everything Republicans are saying. Don’t they technically have the power just to skip any an all Republican amendments altogether?
If the Republicans submit reasonable amendments that – if enacted – would serve the best interests of the American people – and would slow down and perhaps kill the bill in the process – such as the McCain amendment – I don’t understand how that helps Democrats pass Obamacare. Voting against the McCain amendment made Democrats look bad and probably ticked off even more senoirs and debating it took a couple of days.
Democrats need 60 votes – which means either getting BOTH Lieberman or Nelson on board or getting one or more Republicans to defect.Did they make significant progress this week on either of those objectives?
I don’t think anybody likes having major policy changes shoved down their throat – and, with the exception of die hard liberals who support Obamacare no matter what – I don’t think Americans are going to respond positively to a Senate who works through weekends, etc. to try and rush through legislation without giving citizens a normal amount of time to learn about, digest and respond to developments.
As I see it the Republicans are presenting themselves as very reasonable and dignified – they are raising issues that people should be thinking about and expecting the public to do it’s job in raising their voices in protest (as we have been since day 1 of this monstrosity) until the isssue becomes so toxic that Democrats finally drop it. It’s a choice that reflects a high opinion of the citizenry. It’s also a choice that reflects both an awareness of their diminished numbers and very limited direct power and an trust that the are on the right side on this issue and that the more they shine the light on the unbecoming aspects of Obamacare the stronger their/our position becomes.

The fact that these clowns are trying to put forth the ol’ college try knowing the vast majority of us want this thing killed is borderline treasonous and to think they are allowing this to happen knowing full well that we’ll pick up seats regardless and they’ll most likely remain in office after this becomes law supports what many of us have said for months….the GOP is on it, Statists under a different party but Statists all the same. They think that once this travesty becomes law that we’ll become even more beholden to the GOP under the guise that they would be the only hope to undo this mess. Power. It’s what it’s all about for the D-Statists and the R-Statists. Forget what’s best for our country. It’s what’s best for them and the State and it’s why they ALL must go. Even the Coburns and DeMints. Like strike eagle said this is war and principle trumps all. This mess could be killed if they want to kill it. Either they don’t have the stones to kill it or worse, they really don’t want it killed.
Shameful. And treasonous.

I’ll say it again
1stRichard (Diary) Saturday, December 5th at 6:55AM EST (link)Healthcare is not listed in the Enumerated powers Article I, Section 8. Some argue the general welfare but this is the heading Article I, Section 8 and not an Enumerated Power. Some argue the commerce clause but is your body interstate commerce? Some argue the 14th Amendment would lead to a crazy slope where you could say everyone should have the exact same everything. Arguing common Defense would be almost impossible to pass Necessary and Proper. Even if you want to argue case law, Linder vs. the United States, Lambert vs. Yellow, Oregon vs. Ashcroft, or Conant vs. Walters, all have similar judgments that government has no authority in healthcare.
If the Senate Republicans want to add amendments then the first should be anyone voting yes for anything Unconstitutional and illegal shall go to jail, for ever.
But this is not to say the federal government has to stay out of this completely, such as the interstate commerce clause but there are many restrictions that must be and not normally followed. It must be for the general welfare, general means everyone and no man, nor corporation, or association of men, have any other title to obtain advantages, or particular and exclusive privileges, distinct from those of the community, than what arises from the consideration of services rendered to the public. The power to regulate is not the power to prohibit all but making conventional. It is only the power make regular, enforceable only by dispossession and not of life or liberty.
We have separation of powers for a reason and it was so drafted in to the framework of our government. It also separated the costs, the federal government provides national defense and must never get in to national entitlements to the few. This separation made us the strongest nation in the world, even if the federal government collapsed the local governments could survive. The federal government has limited enumerated powers and the remainder and majority of power shall to the states but mostly to the people, the individual. Our schools, local police and fire, all the essential services belong to and directly funded by the states but mostly to the people, the individual. Now we have the federal government entitlements competing with the national defense of the country, so noted they are talking a war tax now. Do you really want your healthcare competing with the national defense of the country?
It is hard to believe the Senate Republicans do no see the protesters that are close to breaking down their doors there, with over one and a half million storming the capital it is real foolish to push your luck. And the Tea Partiers back home are boiling tar and gathering feathers for when they go home. No more socialism or socialism light, if you want to keep your job Republicans and Democrat there is three easy steps
1. Give the conservatives a reason to fight, and we are not to be fooled with any more
2. Show the unenrolled/independents there is a difference, a positive one, time to do some show and tell
3. Do not play in the socialist sandbox, grow up, this is not a game any more
It is virtually impossible for a conservative.....
harlan Saturday, December 5th at 12:05PM EST (link)…to rationally discuss politics with a liberal, when the vast majority of elected republican are so utterly incompetant.
They constantly offer up ammo to the libs, and of course the bought-and-paid-for media magnify it by a tremendous factor.
republicans suck at the game of politics.

The GOP Senators are cowards
Bill S (Diary) Saturday, December 5th at 12:55PM EST (link)They are afraid that the Dems will frame them as “the party of no” and obstructionists. Well, guess what, John Kyl? It’s too late to worry about that now. It’s time to go all-in and use every single tool you have and put a stop to this abomination of legislation.
If the GOP believes that legislation is necessary for health care, propose an entirely different bill. There have been a myriad of ideas tossed around, including the lifting of antitrust restrictions, cross-state-line insurance coverage, Medicare coverage for those who are truly non-covered today, etc. There are ways of improving the system that do not require the draconian actions proposed by ReidPelObama care.
GOP Senators – GROW A PAIR. Fight this bill. Stop trying to be buddies with the Democrats. Show us how the GOP has better ideas than they do – don’t just try to out-Democrat the Democrats.
It should not be this hard.

After the GOP bloodbaths in the last two elections,
Achance (Diary) Saturday, December 5th at 1:12PM EST (link)the remaining Rs should be in incredibly safe seats. They should be able to figure out that they have more to fear from PO’d Republicans than from the Ds or the Axis of Evil Media. That they can’t seem to bear up seems really to reflect their character more then the political situation.
In Vino Veritas
Which is exacty why
Stephen Halsey (Diary) Saturday, December 5th at 2:14PM EST (link)They’ll let this mess pass. They think they aren’t going anywhere in 2010 or 2012; they won’t have to suffer the practical health care consequences of this bill’s passage and they’ll appear as the party that tried to male it better so the masses will look to them to undo it.
Power.
It’s what it’s all about and it’s precisely why I called out good conservatives like Sens. Coburn and DeMint. Coburn threatened to read the bill on the floor and then caved to the RINOs who wants to play nice with the Marxists. Marxists have never played nice and nor should we. This our country we’re talking about here yet that doesn’t appear to matter to these guys. Coburn and DeMint need to be pulling out every delay tactic and parliamentary trick in the book to kill this bill yet it’s another bill and another day at the office.
Sen. Coburn and DeMint, if you or your staff read this blog then you will see what is brewing. This is war. Act like it. Kill this bill.

imapatriot Saturday, December 5th at 3:00PM EST (link)I’m from Arizona, we have two Senators with an R after their name and somehow, I still don’t feel warm and fuzzy about it. Kyl is no better than McCain. They only fill up seats on our side of the aisle. This gentlemen’s club needs to be broken up and some patriots sent in. I will be campaigning for any conservative running against both of these career politicians.
In the primary, right?

littlel Sunday, December 6th at 7:59AM EST (link)These 2 R’s from AZ are 2 who could not wait to sell American Citizens out on Immigration Refom and it seems they are doing the same on Health Care. It is no wonder that the RNC, RNSC…are so disconnected from the Grassroots Conservatives, they hold up in their ivory tower and watch as the forest around them burns to the ground. Oh yes they toss a cup of water at the flames but they hold back the flood gates of the ocean for more important issues, I guess like what color to paint the center line stripes on a highway named for them!
These 2 , like many others in the House and Senate, have lost their will to fight when they get no payoff in the end. I would love to see a wholesale flushing of these entrenched RINO’s, but when we have such stallwort candidates like Carly or Meg running, I hold little hope the Republicans will do anything more than let America be taken over by liberals in secure distircts and total soverginity of America Destroyed—but they have no problem asking you to send them money to get re-Elected, so they can keep living the high life of jet-setting with the likes of Reid, Pelosi, Gore, Clinton… May God Help America, since it is clear the Republicans in the Senate will not!
Taking the weekend off, your Senate isnt; dam them.
skicougar (Diary) Sunday, December 6th at 10:51AM EST (link)Just an FYI that Fox news reported that the Senate took a vote Saturday and are taking another vote today, on what; I forgot; but shows me that the Senate is going ahead with govt care.
Senators that tell you this will not get thru this year, are too dumb for their own good.
I can get quite a lot done if I work 7 days a week; so can they.
So, I’m asking, if you have a free minute; call or email a Senator and let them know just because it’s Sunday; you still do not want govt healthcare just as bad as when its Monday and add in whatever commentary you wish.
I could not get thru to any DC lines and Landreiu and Lincoln were full; but I’ll be hitting local offices.
You cannot give them an inch. The Dem Senators have proven they will take it an inch at a time and the GOP Senators sure look like they’re rolling over.

tokm908 (Diary) Monday, December 7th at 6:03AM EST (link)Suggesting amendments to the bill will have the same affect as proposing their own bill, which is ZERO. I watched c-span2 yesterday and the Republican amendments got shot down and the Democrat amendments were passed (for the most part). This attempt to amend the bill into their own died before it started. This is just another reminder that we need to clean house over the next few years. I’m talking the current Republicans and the current Democrats, every one of em.

teridavisnewman (Diary) Monday, December 7th at 11:16AM EST (link)I am running for Congress in the 12th Illinois Congressional district against a long-time Democrat incumbent who voted for the bill and supports amnesty for illegal aliens while ignoring the constituents as he hasn’t had a town meeting since 2005.
