The NRSC has sent its top lawyer to Alaska on Lisa Murkowski’s behalf and Joe Miller went on Fox today to point out the NRSC is inappropriately meddling in the race now, even though Murkowski is flirting with an independent or write-in bid.
Well, I’ve just received a copy of a letter (PDF) from Miller’s attorneys demanding the disqualification of Lisa Murkowski campaign observer Bonnie Jack.
The Alaska Division of Elections staff and Joe Miller’s staff observed Ms. Jack using confidential voter information and then calling a voter based on that information. The Miller team wants Ms. Jack disqualified.
Give what you can to Joe Miller’s efforts. He’s going to need all the money he can get to hold on to his victory.

joecollins (Diary) Thursday, August 26th at 11:18PM EST (link)Memories of the national Repubs backing Dede Scozzafava, only to have her drop out and endorse the Democrat. Here we go again. Whose side is the NRCC on?
I refuse to donate a cent to the NRCC. I pick my candidates and send them money directly. Yes, I sent Joe some cash.
You Mean The NRSC
IJB Thursday, August 26th at 11:26PM EST (link)The NRCC is the House campaign committee, and has nothing to do with Miller v. Murkowski.
Yes, but...
merryj1 Thursday, August 26th at 11:51PM EST (link)…wasn’t Scuzz a Congressional candidate? If so, it’s six of one, half a dozen of the other.
Not Really
IJB Friday, August 27th at 12:09AM EST (link)The difference is – this cycle the NRCC made one big mistake, and apparently learned from it; the NRSC has made something like half-a-dozen mistakes, and has shown no evidence of having learned from them.
But the bottom line is that the NRCC has nothing to do with this AK issue.
I disagree IJB
Scope (Diary) Friday, August 27th at 11:29AM EST (link)The NRCC made more than one mistake. They are very much so interfering in local primaries, and making sure that their choice gets the nomination. The VA-5 race is one example. They are just as guilty of doing what the NRSC is doing. I do agree that they are not involved in the Alaska Senate race. I think that joecollins just made a simple mistake.
Actually, The NRCC's Job Is (Partly) To "Interfere" In Primaries...
IJB Friday, August 27th at 11:59AM EST (link)…And by that I mean it is (partly) their job to recruit candidates.
You don’t have to like it, and you don’t have to like their recruitment choices – but you can’t deny that it’s *not* their job.
What the NRCC should *never* do is, once they’ve recruited a candidate or two, is to actually *intervene* in a Primary by giving money and trying to pick “winners and losers”.
IOW, the NRCC was totally within their right to “recruit” Hurt to run in VA-05. But no one “made” the voters of VA-05 then nominate Hurt – the VA-05 voters had their shot to take down the NRCC “recruited” candidate and did not do so.
But there were plenty of other primaries this cycle where the NRCC recruited someone, and then the primary voters went in a different direction (e.g. AZ-08). Frankly, that’s the way it should work…
No it's not

Are You Going To Seriously Make The Claim That The NRCC Shouldn't "Recruit"?!
IJB Friday, August 27th at 12:05PM EST (link)Because I could not disagree more.
In fact, it wasn’t just two years ago around here when people were *slamming* the NRCC and the NRSC for doing a “bad job” at recruiting!
You can’t have to both ways – either its the committees’ jobs is to recruit candidates (in which case it’s OK to slam them when they do a poor job of it), or it’s not their jobs *ever* to recruit in which case no onc can complain when we fail to recruit candidates to run in certain states or certain districts.
If given the choice, put me down for Option #1.
I'm replying to your comment title
Neil Stevens (Diary) Friday, August 27th at 12:14PM EST (link)They can recruit all they want, but if they start trying to clear out primaries, well, then they can’t ask all Republicans to support them.
If you’re going to claim to speak for all Republicans, you can ‘t take side against Republicans. It’s pretty basic.

IJB Friday, August 27th at 12:17PM EST (link)No IJB, you are wrong about VA-05
Scope (Diary) Friday, August 27th at 12:43PM EST (link)The field was already huge, and more announcing their runs weekly. Cantor saw an opening for “his friend” Hurt, his words not mine, and pushed it. Hurt was late to the party, and, only entered because of Cantor’s push. He knew he had some big bad black marks on his voting record, including the tax increase vote, during the D Warner administration. It was listed as one of the 10 biggest conundrums for the Republicans, in an article that was national. That was even long before Hurt got in the race. It is well known that the bigger the field, the more likely the most moderate will win. Some of the field of candidates were awful, and should have dropped out early on. There were a few candidates that were terrific, and, if one of them had won the primary, we wouldn’t be looking at a very possible win for Perriello once again. Many in the district would be beating the pavement, and sending their last pennies to any of the few, that were anyone but Hurt. Hell, Hurt won’t even attend debates in the district now if the third party candidate is a part of them. The local Tea Party had their monthly meeting last night, and, guess who showed up, yup, Perriello, but, not Hurt. He probably didn’t show up because the Tea parites didn’t support him.
Just a few years ago, there were many races, local and national, that didn’t even field a Republican candidate. The Democrats won by default. I would surely understand the need for recruitment back then. That has drastically changed with the onset of disgust at the Progressives. I’m very happy that the little guy, with no name recognition, and no money to speak of, is willing to put himself through the nasty game of campaigns. The names Marco Rubio, and Dan Benishek were never heard until this election cycle, yet they won their primaries, just as I hope Miller does. The problem now, is that in some races there are too many candidates, and the establishment moderate recruits wind up winning, because the conservative votes get split. The new game of the NRSC and the NRCC is not in making sure the Republicans take/keep the seat, it is in choosing those that will keep their elite positions in DC alive.
Unless you pay close attention to the local stuff, including listening to the local talk radio show, even from afar, you really can’t speak with any credibility. You are just plain wrong about VA-05.

NRCC = Incumbents
GreyCloak (Diary) Friday, August 27th at 3:52AM EST (link)Who’d a thunk it? The National Republican Congressional Committee supports a Republican Congresswoman?
Leadership PACS gave Ms. Murkowski $162,000. Lawyers gave her $75,500.
Neither the NRCC or the NRSC claim any contributions to Alaska (except for $180 to Don Young R-AK). NRSC gave NOTHING to Alaska, but sent $30,000 to Marco Rubio and $10,000 to Charlie Christ (presumably, before he became independent).
In reviewing recipients/contributions on OpenSecrets.org (based on FEC filings through August), it strikes me that “Campaign Committee” contributions to candidates tend to be less than $1 million in total, while contributions to “other stuff” generally exceed that by ten times.
Many candidates received $32 (thirty-two dollars!!!) from the NRCC … Of Texas candidates, MY Rep received nothing; SEVERAL candidates received $32, THREE candidates received $500 plus or minus! My old contributions of but $100/year just “ain’t goin’ to happen, no more.”
Please contribute as much as you legally can to any candidate, but don’t support House or Senate “Committees” … they want your money but will not support your candidates.
I'll Let Someone More Knowledgeable, Like Neil, "School" You On What The NRCC Does
IJB Friday, August 27th at 11:25AM EST (link)But Neil & co. are exactly right about the NRCC – it is *impossible* for any single small-donor to keep track of all 435 races going on every two years in this country.
Contributing to 2 or 3 candidates directly may make you feel better (and, in a primary, may actually help improve our caucus overall), but it will do all of *nothing* to help the GOP take, or maintain, the House of Representatives.
I’m not convinced we need the NRSC (it is possible for an individual to keep track of 33-36 races every 2 years IMO).
But we absolutely *do* need the NRCC. Don’t kid yourself…
Let's put it this way about the NRCC
Neil Stevens (Diary) Friday, August 27th at 11:29AM EST (link)When conservatives decide they’re going to give money directly to good House candidates, they fail miserably at it. People like Joe Wilson and Michelle Bachmann get way more money than they’ll ever need while 50 other good candidates go hungry, because those conservatives have never heard or them.

minister_of_war Friday, August 27th at 3:21AM EST (link)… at least in that pathetic & horrible case the national Republican election arm for the US House was only getting involved before the Primary. The NRSC, RNC, or NRCC getting involved after the Primary actually took place is unheard of.
What Joe Miller needs to do now is promise that unless that sub-human abortion-lover Murkowski definitively announces that she will under no circumstances mount a 3rd party, independent, or write-in bid; that Miller himself will promise to do the exact same thing if he does not end up maintaining his lead once all of the votes are counted.
The would be a classic maneuver for Miller & just like in Poker it’s time for him to call her bluff. If she wants to raise him by even allowing the rumor to permeate that she might drop out & mount an independent bid if the final ballots don’t go her way, then she had better be willing to take the chance of seeing him destroy her chances of uniting Republicans if the final votes do sway things enough for her.
It would be like one of those situations in Poker where you just know that you must have the best hand but your opponent raised you anyway. By not stating outright that she WILL NOT

It would be like one of those situations in Poker where you just know that you must have the best hand but your opponent raised you anyway. By not stating outright that she WILL NOT run, Murkowski, has put Miller in a position where HE MUST go all in. Then we’ll see if she backs down.
If he can get her to promise not to run independently, and makes her put it in writing, then once he wins, she will look really, really bad if she changes her mind.

merryj1 Friday, August 27th at 12:03AM EST (link)It’s possible enough early votes were in (absentee) ahead of time to push Murkowski past Miller’s margin; I dearly hope not, but it might happen on the square. If so, well, that’s how it broke.
But the NRSC has no business throwing Party weight and resources to one Republican Primary candidate over another, even IF Primary voters hadn’t already made it pretty clear they prefer the candidate the NRSC is trying to throw under the bus.
I’ll echo a previous comment: DON’T send one dime to these Party hacks. And, by the way, when is Cornyn up for re-election? Is there a conservative challenger around?

If this is the appearance - outside meddling -
cactusjack Thursday, August 26th at 11:21PM EST (link)I cannot imagine anywhere else in the Union it would play worse than in Alaska. Murkowski is either desperate or has been in DC so long she has forgotten how the local folks in AK feel about teams of NY or Calif lawyers flying in, jumping off at the airport, ready to tell Alaskans how to run their own state and its unique set of laws and circumstances. One of our RS Alaskans needs to remind everybody the story of how she became Senator in the first place. I am not an Alaskan and don’t have anything against Sen Lisa M. I just know from having lived there a short while, how the locals take to outside meddling and preaching.
Glad to see Miller standing up to the NRSC
takemccain2 (Diary) Thursday, August 26th at 11:22PM EST (link)This is big. A poll watcher (I’m guessing that is what this Bonnie Jack was doing) is not allowed to interfere with voting nor are they allowed to influence the process.
I was a poll watcher in the 2000 elections and I learned a good bit about the responsibilities of watchers. It is actually criminal to tell a person how to vote or try and influence a would-be voter. The job of the poll watcher is to check for any suspicious behavior at the polls, to challenge votes when their is just reason to suspect voter fraud and to make sure that ballot handlers are following the set rules and times of voting.
You also are not allowed to get voters personal details as this is also illegal. Can’t believe that a Murkowski supporter would be that brazen but I don’t put anything past establishment campaigns.
What it really cool is that a GOP candidate is actually fighting back, and that makes me like Joe Miller even more.
I think, therefore I am not a Democrat. I fight, therefore I am not a Republican.

jimmyneutron Friday, August 27th at 8:45AM EST (link)As someone who has served as an election judge in MN for the past 8 years and a head judge for over 6 of those, I can say that allowing anyone to see voter information or to interact with voters is something I can not even imagine doing. In MN at least, poll watchers are not allowed to see any voter info, are not allowed to speak to voters anywhere on the voting grounds and could certainly not do what this person supposedly did. If I saw that I would call the county election officials and possibly the sheriff ASAP. Of course, this being the modern hi tech age, I would also be sure to ‘capture’ this persons actions for posterity on my cell phone video camera:-)

Achance (Diary) Thursday, August 26th at 11:28PM EST (link)Murkowski hasn’t said one word to indicate that she would run third party or write in. It is, in fact, almost impossible to do at this stage of the game, and essentially impossible to do successfully. You can’t win as a write in, though you could elect the Democrat and she won’t do that. It is extraordinarily unlikely that she would or could make a deal with the Libertarians to become their nominee, and, again, the only thing it might accomplish is electing the Democrat. The only thing she’s said is that it is too early to talk about her plans until the votes are counted – and they aren’t. And it isn’t just absentees; there’s lots of questioned ballots as well.
I kinda know who Bonnie Jack is, she’s been around awhile. If she did something stupid, she should be disqualified; most of the people observing don’t know jack about the rules, they just ask questions about things they don’t understand. Then the nice ladies call the Regional Manager to get an answer and if the local Elections staff can’t answer, then the Director gets called, and if that answer doesn’t suit, you get to go to court. Once the ballots are in the hands of the Division of Elections, it is really hard to cheat.
I’m one of those evil Murkowski observers; there were three of us, and six Miller observers, though we didn’t feel outnumbered, and we were all former Murkowski appointees. You know what? The only thing any of us questioned was whether a few ballots should be allowed to have only their Statewide votes counted or their Statewide and State Senate votes counted because they’d moved or changed their name or some such and didn’t properly appear on the registered voter list at the polling place they showed up at. That and we asked the Elections staff for some strict scrutiny of any ballots that they rejected, and, you know what, we agreed with the ones they rejected.
The paranoia, even hysteria about this is unseemly. I know a lot of the Miller supporters are from places that have black helicopters constantly circling, but this is bordering on silliness.

I know a bit about AK politics (at least for a lower 48er), and a fair bit more about politics in general. And one thing I do know is that these sort of stories don’t get floated in the media unless the candidate is pushing them. If there is nothing to them, all Murkowski has to do is put out the word officially and I’ll happily stand down with my concerns.
I agree with you that she has almost no path to victory, but she could easily swing the election to the Dems if she rank on a third party ticket– and that’s something neither of us want.

A whole lot of us are sick and tired of Cornyn and the NRSC interfering with the will of the voters prior to the primaries being held or finalized. At the end of the day, we’ll send a Republican to the Senate, most likely Joe Miller. The country will carry on and hopefully reverse the descent into Socialism. Up here, we’ll still have the Pro Palin party and the anti Palin party, and quite likely an financially Liberal governor, whether that Governor has an R or a D after his name. We have to live with that, you all don’t. Given that background, try to at least understand why we’re so hostile to outside interference..

The "Outside Interfence" Line Is Getting Really, Really Old...
IJB Friday, August 27th at 2:07AM EST (link)I’m more than a little tired of esp. the AK (and to a lesser extent the AZ) people trotting this line out.
Especially considering that no one seems to have any problem turning right around and telling us chapter and verse on what’s happening, and what should happen, in CA. So I guess what’s good for CA isn’t good enough for AK or AZ?…
Face it – you’re part of an actual *nation*, and people from other states are going to have actual opinions about what goes on in your state, and may actually try to influence outcomes. That’s the game. It ain’t worth bellyaching over it…
If This Was About Opinions I'd Agree

RINO Senators Affect Us, Too
chipbennett (Diary) Friday, August 27th at 8:00AM EST (link)As long as RINO senators have the ability to impact me, I will weigh in on their election however and whenever I choose. Murkowski’s votes (and McCain’s votes) directly impact the lives of people outside of AK (and AZ), so those “outsiders” have every right to be involved in and to voice opinions regarding their election.
Bingo - She's Had Multiple Opportunities To Nip This In The Bud
IJB Friday, August 27th at 12:01AM EST (link)And has failed to do so. Multiple times. (It’s 2 days now, it’s not like Murkowski hasn’t had chances to completely rule this out.)

Bill Thursday, August 26th at 11:33PM EST (link)BALLOTS HAVE BEEN FOUND! Must be the GOP version of ACORN working strong arming elections officials in ALASKA, huh?
I guess even if JOE MILLER is the winner when all the absentee ballots and military ballots are accounted for and the conveniently “provisional ballots” are counted, oh and the FOUND BALLOTS, I guess SEN L.isa M. will be the winner! I guess a write in or Independent status is the place RINOS go when they don’t want to cross all the way to become “Jackasses”.
Thank God! November 3, 2010. U.S. House, GOP 290, DEM 145; U.S. Senate, GOP 70, DEM 28, IND 2. Keep on praying!
Bill, do you have a clue what the village of Kwigillingock or Kongiginak is like
Achance (Diary) Thursday, August 26th at 11:55PM EST (link)and what it takes to get ballots from there to Anchorage or Juneau? No, don’t lie, you don’t.
You are dealing with getting ballots from places a five hundred or more miles from Anchorage or a thousand miles from Juneau. There are no roads. Phone service is limited. Airplanes have one engine and a propellor.
It really isn’t worth it to anyone with the Division of Elections to cheat. Hell, all of the appointee level types were appoiinted by Saint Sarah and she backed Miller. If anybody should be worried about an election being stolen, it should be Murkowski.

Places like Kwig and Kong, not even the Natives will bother to say the whole name, can be travelled to pretty readily; it just takes time. There’s an air taxi flight or two a day from the village to a hub like Bethel, in the case of those two, and there’s a jet or two a day from the hub to ANC, then this time of year four to six jets a day from ANC to JNU, but by then you’ve used a day and a half or more and then somebody who’s used to driving a half hour to the state capital is ranting about “FOUND BALLOTS.”

No, I'm not saying that and I don't know what would indicate that to you.
Achance (Diary) Friday, August 27th at 12:48AM EST (link)You could probably play ACORN games with votes in rural Alaska but there aren’t many votes out there and they tend D. Back in the day, we had five time zones in Alaska and you came out of Juneau, Anchorage, and Fairbanks knowing pretty much exactly how many votes you needed. There was only one SSB radio phone in most villages and that was the way you communicated with them Well, you had an hour til the polls closed in the Bethel region and another hour after that untll the polls closed in Western Alaska. Needless to say, the votes of each village were up for bid. Can’t do that anymore.
Once the ballots are in the hands of the Division of Elections, the potential for fraud with a Republican administration is pretty close to nil. Democrats can just count ‘em til they get ‘em right and the press will never say a word, but Republicans can’t do that. And besides, all the Elections management are Palin/Parnell appointees, and She backed Miller. On that basis, Murkowski should be the one worried about hanky-panky.

it is the part before the 'once' that I'm worried about
takemccain2 (Diary) Friday, August 27th at 1:05AM EST (link)If the chances are nil – as you state – once the ballots are in the hands of the Division of Elections, then the real concern is what happens to those ballots in transit.
I don’t know you so I’m not going to make judgments about your motives or reasoning. I can tell you that posters on RS deeply distrust the RNC and especially the NRSC due to the NY-23 and FL Senate GOP premature endorsement. In short, the NRSC is not credible and your candidate is inviting some very bad feelings by allowing them to send an attorney your way. This smacks of David Boise and Gore in 2000 trying to find votes on everything from bubblegum wrappers to spoiled ballots to try and find a way for Gore to win.
Memories are long and this has the potential to start a rending of any voting coalition that the GOP would need to win back power in the Congress or field a competitive candidate in 2012.
Just and observation and a warning.
I think, therefore I am not a Democrat. I fight, therefore I am not a Republican.
You can't do it. They're all OCR read ballots
Achance (Diary) Friday, August 27th at 1:19AM EST (link)with a paper backup. The only argument in a recount is whether the X-out is the real vote or the other vote is the real vote. It can get serious in a single digit margin house race; I observed the recount in a four vote race last election. It started the day with a four vote margin and it ended the day with a four vote margin.
There aren’t any crews riding around in vans voting ballots for dead people. If a local polling place could be corruped enough, I guess you could gin up some votes but it would be really hard to do and even harder to get away with. There really aren’t a lot of polling places in Alaska where everybody doesn’t know everybody, and unlike all you enlightened places, we have ID requirements unless the pollworker says “known to me.” There’s a little room for cheating there, but not much.

Bill Monday, August 30th at 11:27PM EST (link)I don’t trust the NRSC nor the Murkowski campaign? And before all the ballots are counted, there are rumors Murkowski is looking for a write-in campaign, 3rd party candidacy, Libertarian bid, etc,, means she will or would be a SORE loser in my eyes! RINOs are GOP, conservatives are just “useful idiots for the GOP or so it seems! Sorry you don’t think I have a brain, Achance?

NRSC:“It doesn’t mean we would fund a recount effort,”
texasgalt (Diary) Friday, August 27th at 12:36AM EST (link)http://tiny.cc/p61dh
This Confirms The Idea That The NRSC Is Primary An "Incumbent Protection Racket"...
IJB Friday, August 27th at 12:50AM EST (link)…And less an organization devoted to actually electing (new) Republicans to the Senate.
I’ve been increasingly thinking that the NRSC needs to be reorganized: split it into two org’s – one actually dedicated to electing Republicans (old and new) in general elections, one that stays *completely* out of primarues, and one that we can actually donate to without having to take a long shower afterwards; and a second org. that continues the “incumbent protection racket” for sitting Senators that the rest of us can safely ignore…
IJB- That second faction already exists
Scope (Diary) Friday, August 27th at 12:12PM EST (link)It’s Jim DeMint’s Conservative Senatorial Committee. He has worked tirelessly and put alot of effort in getting conservatives elected. Most that he has supported, if not all, are new candidates, not incumbents.
Pretty True. But I'd Like To See That Org. Become More "Formal"...
IJB Friday, August 27th at 12:14PM EST (link)…And permanent.
I’m worried that it will disappear in a puff of smoke when DeMint does.

Neil Stevens (Diary) Friday, August 27th at 12:17PM EST (link)I suspect I’d rather we have temporary bodies led by the best conservatives at the moment, than have a permanent body there to be taken over by career climbers.

It could be argued that the NRSC
texasgalt (Diary) Friday, August 27th at 12:53PM EST (link)is within bounds to send their legal cousel to advise the incumbent. The concerns and allegations are swirling around as to exactly how they intend to help.
You can see from the article that they are not saying that they WOULD NOT fund a recount. They have said only that the help from their attorney does not mean they will. Interesting way to have prased it.
I disagree - they should help both or neither
bk (Diary) Saturday, August 28th at 8:49AM EST (link)I think they should stay out of primaries myself, but it they go in there with help for Murkowski only, then if Miller comes out ahead he’s wasted a ton of resources that she got for free and will be handicapped in the general.
I’d rather the NRSC not go in at all, but if they do it should be to save resources for the eventually winner and to make sure everything is kosher for both parties.
Wow....
takemccain2 (Diary) Friday, August 27th at 1:11AM EST (link)That article sums up exactly what we feel out here. I was so right to quit the RNC 3 years ago and refrain from giving them a single dime. What a bunch of cronies!

Change Jar Conservative (Diary) Friday, August 27th at 2:51AM EST (link)I’m big fans of both of you and nothing in this race has changed that.
What I think a majority of us are having trouble with is Lisa’s comment yesterday or the day before where she had a very clear opportunity to say that she wouldn’t run third party and didn’t.
Perhaps it was just the Alaska papers pulling things out of context, but now that there is an uproar (at least down here in the lower 48) about it, it would be nice to see her just come out and clarify it with:
We believe that every vote should count and so we are going to go through that process. If at the end of the day, the Republican voters have chosen Joe Miller then he will have my support.
It doesn’t seem that hard.
As for the sentiment here that the NRSC should butt out, I agree but then that’s not new to Alaska. I feel they should stay out of all primaries.
You said that the NRSC is there to retain current Senators. That may be true.

Palin pulled it off, though she had the ADN’s total support after she became their favorite Republican after try to do Randy. Miller ain’t got that. You have no idea how much the ADN hates the Murkowski name, so they helped Miller more than a little.
Now where I was wrong in ’06 is that I thought that the ADN and Channel 2′s big guns would do in Sarah so that Knowles, their boy, could win; I was wrong. So, what you’re all betting on is that the Democrats and their media buddies can’t do in Miller. Actually, they probably can’t if the Sitka guy remains the nominee and if Lisa stays out. If it doen’t play out that way, all bets are off.

What Im hearing
SirGladiator (Diary) Friday, August 27th at 4:28AM EST (link)All Ive heard so far, in the wake of this awesome result, is what an awesome dude this Joe Miller is, a war hero, a major scholar, just an all around super qualified and fantastic candidate. Before Tuesday, I didn’t really know anything about him, other than he was the Conservative, backed by Palin, and Murkowski was the more liberal candidate. It seems he’s getting a ton of free media attention now, I think even if Murkowski tries a write in or Libertarian campaign it’ll fail pretty badly, because in addition to the obvious unlikeliness of something like that succeeding in general, we have the fact that Miller is just a great candidate, way too tough to beat. Of course we all want Murkowski to put her ego aside and endorse Miller so he can win by 30 points, but even if we have to win it by just 10 points, Rubio style, I’m not concerned, we’ll win it either way. Right now all we need is for the NRSC to not try anything underhanded, get those ballots counted quickly and fairly, get the victory certified and we can move on to the General and another great victory!
