One of those rare moments when I’m at a loss for words

Last night I was on John King USA with former White House Communications Director Anita Dunn. We had an exchange that left me, in one of those rare cases, totally at a loss for words.

We were discussing taxes and spending and the Republicans’ refusal to go along with unemployment benefits extensions unless spending is cut. The Democrats are attacking the GOP for wanting to extend “tax cuts for the rich” by letting the Bush tax cuts stay in place.

I said I’d be all for extending unemployment benefits if more Democrats like Alvin Greene use them to become Democratic Senate nominees, but otherwise I believe we need to cut taxes instead of increase spending.

And then Anita Dunn replied. I wish I had the video. I have no idea if they had my face on camera when she said it.

She said that tax cuts were spending too. Huh?

You read that right. She said cutting taxes was a form of spending. She tried to explain it. I was still trying to compute how what she said made any sense. I still can’t quite get my mind around how letting me keep my money is somehow the government spending my money.

I finally just had to say that if tax increases and tax cuts are both forms of government spending then my money is really the government’s money. Ms. Dunn kind of sort of went along with that, explaining that tax cuts were some form of spending from the tax code. I think the expression on my face summed up my response to that.

And that’s why the Democrats are losing now. Because they have no respect for your money as your money. They think it all belongs to the government.

The exchange was actually a good one — a conversation. And I appreciated Ms. Dunn’s candor. But I’m still baffled how cutting the taxes you pay to the federal government is somehow the federal government spending money they then never were given to spend.

Is that like all the signs in our county (and I’m sure beyond the county) that say “Citizen Collection (Location or Point – I’ve quit paying attention to them)”. “They” try to tell us that these are simply recycling and trash collection locations.

Seriously, I’ve meant to go to the County Commissioner’s meeting and point out to them that these signs are playing into the hands of the “Black Helicopter” crowd. At least I hope the wording is simply a matter of poor choice. 50 years ago I would not have added that last sentence.

Back in the 90s, IIRC, I heard him talking about how he’d rather see gov’t expenditures go toward things like Section 8 housing, as opposed to being “spent” on middle class subsidies like the mortgage interest deduction.

It’s a fundamental disease that seems to afflict many career Washingtonians.

Money that I earn by my labor, or by my wits, is my money. That portion which the tax code does not confiscate is not a tax subsidy.

It’s our money. It’s our government. Any elected official that has a tough time with that concept deserves a one way ticket home. And he can pay for his own damn ticket.

Didn’t you know that if you have to take a pay cut, you mortgage goes up?? Next time ask her the opposite and get that logic out there – if taxes are raised, does that count as a cut in spending?

The Democrats have used this for a long time anyways, they always talk about how tax cuts ‘cost’ too much. Just another thing that the Bush Admin got beat up for without defending themselves and the truth.

It has always made me a little crazy to hear the democrats in Congress say that we can’t ‘afford’ a tax cut.

Well, I can’t afford the big tax increase that’s coming at the end of this year. So smurf them.

When the IRS and other gov’t agencies report the money we are allowed to keep as a “revenue loss” because they failed to confiscate it, well, there isn’t a whole lot of respect for our property on display. She’s just crossed the Rubicon on taxes by saying out loud what the democrat tax increasers all believe. It all belongs to them by right. Once we’re completely socialized they can make it true, the gov’t will write us our paychecks and give us our fair portion of their money that we’ve earned.

“If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. they just use your employer as a proxy. Your ‘fair’ portion is the after-tax amount. Aside from allowing the minor switch after the socialist takeover, it conditions us to not miss the money (this works w/401k deductions to ones benefit) and to falsely believe that we are getting something ‘back’ each spring. I’d like to see it illegal to have taxes deducted from pay and requiring it to be paid via a handwritten check or money order (via handing over cold hard cash) every single month so people will realize how they are being robbed.

In her mind…
It’s the governments money… they allow us to keep what they decide.
We don’t own property… we are just the temporary caretakers.
We all work for the state.

This is why the entire country has to wake up and get these people out of power as soon as possible. Our freedom is at stake.

The GOP trying to get their point across to the electorate that they proposed unspent stimulus and the Democrats voted against it… They are using this issue as a political football deliberately.

I am 50, live in MI, and am collecting unemployment for the first time in my life. It has been a God send, but never was supposed to last forever. There are some pretty scared people in this state who have done everything correctly in their lives and are now at the mercy of that damn check. Anita Dunn and her party are complete idiots. It is unfortunate that many Americans do not pay attention to politics whatsoever, which is their choice, but the GOP had better shit or get off the pot and get their message across……..They make me angrier than the left because they never bother to explain themselves

tax credits (not cuts)?

Cheetah772 (Diary) Tuesday, July 13th at 9:31AM EST (link)

Maybe she meant tax credits? You pay back in taxes, and government promises to give you a tax credit, which can be technically called a form of spending, since tax credits have to come from somewhere.

On the other hands, tax cuts are not a form of spending, it merely means you pay less in taxes, nothing more or less.

This has been the Democrat theme ever since Tom Daschle rose to prominence in the Senate.

But it also gives us a splendid opportunity. They are going back to the Keynesian model employed by FDR: To restore economic health governments must spend Spend SPEND!

So, if Spending is the key and if Tax Cuts are Spending, why not go ALL IN and cut taxes TO THE BONE.

the same tactic in a debate with Paul Ryan on CNBC’s Squawk Box this morning and Ryan, apparently having watched your encounter with Ms. Dunn, was ready for it. Bush did a better job, but he never countered Lib/Prog Newspeak

renny (Diary) Tuesday, July 13th at 11:59AM EST (link)

Bush’s tax cuts ended the Clinton (remember the dot-com collapse?)-9/11 recession and raised revenues (while Obama’s are off 11%);

Bush had years of 4.36% unemployment (Obama has officially 9.5% but my state–nJ– is 10% and my county is 12%, MI is 12%, and 4 counties in CA are 22%);

Bush had a DOW of 15000 (Obama has an unstable 10000, meaning retirees and investors have LOST 1/3 or more of their investments and futures);

Bush had a deficit of $161 billion in 2006-WSJ (and Obama has a $trillion and has already increased the debt by $4 trillion with no end in sight);

Bush created 4 million private sector jobs (Obama has lost 8.8 million and created 750,000 PUBLIC jobs that are tax-draining and nonproductive toward GNP);

Bush tried throughout 2005 to generate interest in restructuring Social Security and barely received MSM mention of his campaign or any speech he made. Soc. Sec. has been added to general revenues since 1968 when Pres. Johnson and a Dem. Congress ended the “lockbox.” SS is now $39 trillion in unfunded liabilities.

Bush did not waste DOJ time suing sovereign states, gutting the economies of several states by business moratoriums, and never chose reverse racism (the New Black Panthers v registered voters) as an administration policy.

First off Erick, I am surprised that you were surprised.

The_Gadfly (Diary) Tuesday, July 13th at 12:08PM EST (link)

My political memories only go back to Carter and Reagan (thankfully more Reagan than Carter) and that was a Democrat meme even back then, as several posters above have already noted.

If you are willing for a moment to suspend your established set of beliefs, and work only from a hypothesis and logical connections I can attempt to explain their non-Euclidean premise. The hypothesis is the government is the full embodiment of the will of the American people. Therefore whatever is the will of the government is the best expression of the will of the American people. Any reduction in the ability of government to engage in a particular policy is therefore against the will of the American people. Most government policy is implemented by spending money. Government spending is funded by tax collections. Therefore any reduction in government tax collection (eg tax cuts, mortgage deductions) is by the chain connection a reduction in the ability of the American people to implement their will.

Now, you and I with our established value system in place will immediately identify the problem with the government = will of the people bit, but many of them do really truly believe it. This is the difference we conservatives must paint in bold colors before our fellow citizens.

And from now on, I hope you will be able to answer them on this fundamental issue, no matter how they vary the fabric which covers the frame of their argument.

Seems clear to me!

SayNoToRINO Tuesday, July 13th at 12:10PM EST (link)

In the current environment, raising or cutting taxes is irrelevant. As long as the Govenment is spending money regardless of tax revenue, they are spending our money. It will have to be paid back. So, she is actually correct! Ouch, my head and wallet hurt!

Maybe she meant the effect on the deficit

satchman3 Tuesday, July 13th at 12:13PM EST (link)

Is it possible that she was referring to the fact that a tax cut would increase the deficit in the same way that spending would increase the deficit?

I don’t think the two are equivalent – that doesn’t make any sense. I personally would like to see the deficit (and debt) dramatically reduced and tax revenue is part of the equation.

We make Chula Vista tax dog-owners to support its frikking municipal dog walk. We could make Austin, TX legal and tax ganja to pay for its Frisbee Golf Course. All of these things ARE actually possible.

We need to grab Mrs. Dunn’s Inner Keynesian and whip his slacker, whinning ass.

Erik – it is quite simple. The Left views all money in the economy as rightfully theirs, so anything our central govt “gives” you – ala a “tax cut” – is money given out. aka – an expense of govt. Quite twisted and illogical but I am often shocked by the basic misunderstanding by those on the left re money, finances and economics.
