FAIL
badkarma6 (Diary) Saturday, October 3rd at 1:12PM EST (link)That is the theme of this administration so far and unfortunately the failure will continue on the Iranian nuke front. They are just going to stall and due to Obama’s complete incompetence on foreign policy, he will let them. Israel may stop them but they know they will not get any support from Washington.
However, Obama’s complete neglect and lack of support for Israel is not going unnoticed by many prominent members of the Jewish community. Many of these folks supported and voted for Obama in 2008 but they certainly won’t make the same mistake twice.

kowalski (Diary) Saturday, October 3rd at 2:47PM EST (link)I hope a lot more people listen to him. Israeli politics is fluid, but what Netanyahu said to the UN was extremely important. Letting Ahmadinejad continue to do what he wants and play the games he’s been playing for the past several years trends toward a really horrible outcome. The question is whether or not Obama can stop playing the games.
You don’t have to particularly like a lot of people who are center-right in the United States or Israel to recognize that they’re correct about this. What’s going on?
Nobody wants to wake up to the morning (or night) that Israelis (or anyone else) see the flash but don’t hear the bang, and so far Obama hasn’t done anything positive to assure me, and I’m not even Jewish nor have I visited Israel.
Mahmoud isn’t interested in winning brownie points for being an “engaging personality” or a responsible person on the world stage, particularly not with nuclear weapons at his command.

avgamerican (Diary) Saturday, October 3rd at 2:36PM EST (link)French president Sarcozy was reportedly very disappointed in President Obama’s speech on Iran. My feeling is that Europe has become a little unnerved by Obama’s pacifist approach to Iran and for that matter he’s caved in the war on terror. In the past, Europe could always hide behind U.S. leadership. European leaders know that is now over. He backed down in Poland, he won’t commit in Afghanistan, and he has signaled that he won’t back democracy in Honduras. Obama is going to create instabilty and threats on all fronts for the next president to deal with.

SteveLA (Diary) Saturday, October 3rd at 12:30PM EST (link)At some point the Israelis will feel threatened and act on their own, the heck with what Obama will or will not do.
The question will be one of will the US allow overflight of Iraq by the Israeli strike force, or will Obama direct the US military to inform Iran of the approaching force. I wouldn’t doubt that Obama is so stupid as to not think that by helping Iran in this way he could curry some small amount of favor.

It only takes US forces in Iraq to start targeting as Israeli strike force, even if they don’t fire, for the Iranians to notice and counter the strike. It’s not direct action by US forces, just start making noise that will be the problem.
But as I said at the top of this thread, once the Israelis feel threatened enough, they will figure a way to strike and strike the will, the heck with Obama. It’s what they do.

I believe we Are at that place on this topic
Raven (Diary) Saturday, October 3rd at 1:11PM EST (link)And I’m not the only one.
You and SteveLA have a point with the other stuff giving away an Israeli attack to the Iranians, but, honestly, what ARE the Iranians going to do about it? Couple years ago, Israeli planes proved they could fly through Iranian ground-based anti-air defenses at will. That only leaves the Iranian air force. And what do they have that has a chance of stopping Israeli F-15s and F-16s and anything newer they might have?
If American forces don’t shoot them down (and they won’t), then what’s to prevent the Israelis from successfully carrying out the mission?
Other than the Israelis, that is. I have significant concerns as to whether they will actually do what they need to do.
“If you do not have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.”

Not stupid
SteveLA (Diary) Saturday, October 3rd at 1:19PM EST (link)Raven
The Iranians are not stupid, and they watched and learned from previous attacks. Their Nuke program is distributed around the country, buried deep underground and well protected.
A strike by Israel against the Iranian nuke program will take a lot, and it make take nukes. If that happens, it will not be a good thing.
Everyone, including former President Bush and many others with deep experience in the region have stated that sanctions and other approaches short of an attack should be tired first. Problem is Obama is not showing much stick, the carrots are just making the Iranians fat and sassy. Proving once again that the cult of personality that is the core of Obama is going to cause some real problems in the Middle East.

The right of the Honduran people to uphold their Constitution is just flat out being ignored. He’s in a much better position to deny Israel the right to defend themselves by denying flying over Iran. Mymood Iminajihad keeps calling for the destruction of Israel but all Obama seems to notice is the build up of Iraq’s nuclear ability, not the fact those missile tests pose an immediate threat to Israel whether or not they’re capable of carrying a nuclear warhead.
Triggers
SteveLA (Diary) Saturday, October 3rd at 1:05PM EST (link)TNJim
I think there are triggers sitting out there that will force the Israelis hand.
1) Live test of a Iranian nuke.
2) Public deployment of Iranian nuke.
3) Effective testing and deployment of a missile that can reach Israel with high accuracy.
The first one, live test, will be difficult now that the South Africans are out of the biz of helping out Middle Eastern states, there’s always the Pakistanis.
But once one of those triggers are reached, look for Israel to strike.

Explanation in Current US Foreign Policy and effects
avgamerican (Diary) Sunday, October 4th at 5:26PM EST (link)Just prior to the Iraq invasion George Bush was criticized by democrats and by UN western powers for unilateral intervention. As I recall Britain was our only close supporter. During the presidential campaign Barack Obama stated very clearly that if the UN felt so strongly about the war on terror then “let them send more troops.” Fast forward. President Obama is now basically saying that the United States will no longer lead in the war on terror nor against rogue states threatening world peace. We are now officially France and Spaini. The only difference is President Obama cannot easily withdraw from Afghanistan and Iraq although he wants to. The UN is now rattled because they know that President Obama’s election is going to have backfiring results they didn’t expect. The end of the US counter balance and strongarm of the Security Council. Europe has taken for granted US power to keep stability. There is no intention of forcing Iran or N. Korea to give up nukes. Europe sees a growing instability by an aggressive Russia and an Iranian nuclear threat. Europe is nervous because they don’t want to lead and they know President Obama won’t. If this were 1961, Russia would have kept the nukes in Cuba and taken Western Berlin without any interference from the United States or Europe. We can only pray that either President Obama wakes up and reverses, or the world can survive without a major war until US voters wake up and elect a “peace through strength” president and congress.

Everyone on the ground knows it’s going to fail, but the powers that be continue to press on.
As a consumer of a recent project, I watched as those accountable continued to press on until they got fired. The option to acknowledge futility was there in the early to mid stages of the project. It was have cost some immediate capital to the director in charge, but almost surely it would not have been fatal.
A year and a fired director later, I just scratched my head. Was it that hard to admit it wasn’t working? Even when everyone knew the end result was going to be very bad?
Regret and human nature are working against the Dems.

People press on – most knowing the production is an utter failure but the director (Obama) thinks they will win an Academy Award.
The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.
