A Scurrilous Race-Baiting Attack on Newt Gingrich

Newt Says He'll Take Jobs Message to NAACP. How Racist!

It’s silly season, I know. But that doesn’t mean we need to tolerate left-wing nonsense thrown at our candidates.

If you’re familiar with his stump speech, Newt Gingrich routinely argues that Obama is a food stamp president and he’d be a paychecks president – that his economic plan would get more people to work so they wouldn’t be stuck relying on government aid. It’s one of his favorite one-liners about how Obama’s economic policies have failed. This is not an attack on food stamp recipients, especially since one of Newt’s core messages is to tout how he drove welfare reforms in the 1990s that provided more incentives to get work. Newt generally makes the point without referring to the race of the people getting food stamps – indeed, he called it “bizarre” when David Gregory last year argued that it was racist to mention food stamps:

GREGORY: First of all, you gave a speech in Georgia with language a lot of people think could be coded racially-tinged language, calling the president, the first black president, a food stamp president.

GINGRICH: Oh, come on, David.

GREGORY: What did you mean? What was the point?

REP. GINGRICH: That’s, that’s bizarre. That–this kind of automatic reference to racism, this is the president of the United States. The president of the United States has to be held accountable. Now, the idea that–and what I said is factually true. Forty-seven million Americans are on food stamps. One out of every six Americans is on food stamps. And to hide behind the charge of racism? I have–I have never said anything about President Obama which is racist.

Another of Newt’s favorite themes is that he’ll go anywhere and talk to any audience – which of course he will, because talking is what Newt does best.

But when Newt combines these two points and says that he’ll take that jobs message to the NAACP if they’ll have him and try to convince black voters that they ought to expect more from Obama – paychecks, not food stamps – he gets branded as racist. The charge is utterly scurrilous and made in bad faith. It’s a textbook example of fraudulent use of the race card.

Here’s how the AP report opens:

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said Thursday he is willing to go before the NAACP and urge blacks to demand paychecks, not food stamps.

Gingrich told a town hall meeting at a senior center in Plymouth, N.H., that if the NAACP invites him to its annual convention this year, he’d go there and talk about “why the African-American community should demand paychecks and not be satisfied with food stamps.”

He also said he’d pitch a new Social Security program aimed at helping young people, particularly African-American males, who he said get the smallest return on Social Security.

To the AP’s credit, it notes the fact that these are both standard, separate themes of Newt’s. Yet we get people like Martin Bashir on MSNBC blaming the totally unrelated murder of a teenager on Newt: “Let’s cut out the food stamps rhetoric right now before things get any worse.” TPM, which is driving this appalling story, got comment from the NAACP, which predictably groused that “It is a shame that the former Speaker feels that these types of inaccurate, divisive statements are in any way helpful to our country.”

What’s next – making it racist to discuss unemployment at all?

Racist?

RACIST?

If the statement that there are “…47,000,000 Americans on Food Stamps…” is true and since there are only about 38,000,000 Blacks in the U.S. population in the first place AND since we already know that not ALL of them are on Food Stamps, nay, not even a majority of them then that means that there would have to be more Non-Blacks than Blacks receiving food stamps.

Could it be that in the fertile mind of David Gregory, the phrase “Food Stamps” automatically conjures up images of Blacks being the primary recipient of them? Doesn’t that make David Gregory the racist here rather than Newt?

“Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.” – C. “It’s not ‘spic’ or ‘n*gger’ anymore. They say, ‘Let’s cut taxes.’”

This is how it works: Democrats create programs that foster the explosion of single motherhood among blacks – which leads unavoidably to an enormous host of social ills among blacks. When a Republican threatens these programs in any way, Democrats accuse the Republican of having expressed a desire for the social ills that spring from these programs.

As to your assertion, this is from 2009: http://news.wustl.edu/news/Pages/15000.aspx , “90 percent of black children will be in a household that uses food stamps. This compares to 37 percent of white children.” Do you have anything better?

It sounds like Newt was surprised by the attack. No Republican should be. I hope, in the future, that the automatic response will be something along the lines of “Woah, hold on. Unlike you or the architects of these programs, I support a little-known institution called ‘the family’. It’s about as old as civilization itself, it’s pretty good at feeding children – and when it’s weakened, hard research — some of the best science that’s ever come out of the social sciences — predicts disaster on every imaginable axis.”

This is why i like Newt

I’ll go with what I have from Wikipedia: [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supplemental_Nutrition_Assistance_Program#Participants ]

—————————————————————————————-
According to the United States Department of Agriculture (based on a study of data gathered in Fiscal Year 2010), statistics for the food stamp program are as follows:

49% of all participants are children (17 or younger), and 49% of them live in single-parent households.
15% of all participants are elderly (age 60 or over).
20% of all participants are non-elderly disabled people.
The average gross monthly income per food stamp household is $731; The average net income is $336.
35% of participants are white; 22% are African-American, not Hispanic; 10% are Hispanic; 2% are Asian, 4% are Native American, and 19% are of unknown race or ethnicity.
——————————————————————————————
Based on the foregoing, I fail to see how anyone but the most racially biased could associate the notion of “Food Stamps” with Racism which would imply that such a person was engaging in stereotyping. This is what it appears David Gregory was doing when he challenged Newt’s comments.

“Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. When is the stupid party gonna take on the media?

Common_Cents (Diary) Friday, January 6th at 8:25PM EST (link)

This crap makes my blood boil. Yet the GOP has no discussion, no plan to take on the hostile media. They suck up to them for media access. If someone calls them out, that person is alienated and not backed up. There are a handful of people that take on the passive aggressive media. They fold like a house of cards when confronted.

This crap makes me so angry!

It really wouldn’t take much of an effort to confront the media, if we had a coordinated message.

Just think how different(better) this country would be if people got even a hint of fair reporting and not these freakin hit pieces? DEMS wouldn’t get any cover for their BS they sling daily.

It’s easy, just ridicule them to their faces and throw the question back in their face.

Tbone (Diary) Friday, January 6th at 10:19PM EST (link)

Newt is right. Tell them to they need jobs not welfare. If they don’t like it tough. They aren’t ever going to vote for Republicans anyway.

And, is it not true that any Black who strays off the Democrat Vote growing Planytation is acalled an Uncle Tom?

Blacks need leaders that will tell them what Newt is telling them but, until they quit voting as a block, why bother with them?

Stating reality isn’t racist. I didn’t say to not give a crap because they are black, I said why give a crap because they vote as a block. see the difference? Instead you two fools just did a typical kneejerk to any criticism that includes the word black. Go join the NAACP, they do that all the time.

lineholder (Diary) Friday, January 6th at 11:54PM EST (link)

why more Conservatives don’t see this. Forget about white guilt and all that other stuff for a few minutes and think entirely in the context of politics.

Unemployment in the black sector of our society is high, much higher than it is for just about anyone else in our nation. And if it’s left up to the left, they’ll keep it that way, too, because it allows them further their political agenda of increasing dependency on our government across society as a whole.

We’ve got a huge opportunity here. And Newt was right to challenge the NAACP on this one, because as it just so happens, a positive message putting jobs versus food stamps could very well resonate with many members of the black community.

The left can’t allow that to happen. They can’t let blame lie where it is due…on Obama’s shoulders. And they can’t let black people start to think that there is a better way above and beyond the narrow scope of that “plantation” to which they have become bound.

So they will undermine us and discredit us in any way they can to keep black people from thinking that Conservatives as a whole might be even remotely dependable or reliable.

We should be proving them wrong, not helping the left advance their cause!!!

Nonsense. Every effort made by Republicans

Tbone (Diary) Saturday, January 7th at 1:14AM EST (link)

to reach out to the Black community has been successfully rebuffed. The Black community has been bought and paid for by the Democrats. They own those votes. It is time to move on.

Or, perhaps you can explain why the Republican appointments of Clarence Thomas, Condi Rice, and Colin Powell had zero effect on Black support for Republicans?

Deal in reality.

Call me names all you like. I really don’t care. And you can buy into that nonsensical self-fulfilling prophecy line of defeatism if you want to.

You and I are not of like mind on this issue. I happen to see an opportunity, primarily due to economic circumstances that are a direct result of the policies Obama has been putting into place during the past three years. You don’t.

If you’re not open-minded enough to consider those possibilities, so be it. But thank the God in Heaven that the rest of us have the right to think independently and determine on their whether we believe that this is an opportunity that should be pursued.

Here's the problem, lineholder...

APA Guy (Diary) Saturday, January 7th at 1:03PM EST (link)

African-Americans (90% of them, anyway) have been brainwashed to believe that someone owes them something in the form of taxpayer (government) handouts…be it preferential treatment in hiring, handouts, whatever. That 90% doesn’t see how Obama’s devaluing of the dollar (and subsequent high gas/food prices) and high taxes negatively impact their lives. They only want to know when the next “government assistance” program is going to help them.

It’s a systematic mentality problem…and it won’t be scrubbed in one election cycle. What we need to do is STOP telling this voting bloc that we will “help them”, but rather tell them WHY Black unemployment is high (low skill sets, lower levels of H.S/college graduation rates, extremely high child illegitimacy rates and subsequent poverty rates) and how they can work to improve their own lives. There is nothing even remotely racist about trying to educate voters to empower themselves.

Someone has to say the emperor has no clothes

Common_Cents (Diary) Saturday, January 7th at 1:10PM EST (link)

Will the decades of brainwashing be undone in one fell swoop? nope.

There are enough of them that will start reflecting on how they’ve been held hostage as victims by the left. It only takes a few.

And as far as I can tell, Common Cents,

lineholder (Diary) Saturday, January 7th at 1:30PM EST (link)

we currently face an opportunity to do exactly that…to point out exactly how the kind of policy decisions that have been made in the past three have impacted their lives on a personal level to so great an extent that they ARE being held hostage to high unemployment and low economic opportunities!

There are cracks in the “wall” that the left has built, and if we had a lick of sense, we’d be chipping away at it, bit by bit, rather than genuflecting and opining about how it can’t be done because they “vote as a block”.

APA Guy, that isn't going to happen

lineholder (Diary) Saturday, January 7th at 1:22PM EST (link)

if we even remotely take the attitude of defeatism, saying to ourselves that it is a “lost cause”, because they vote as a “block”, and we shouldn’t even make the effort, justifying our own lack of responsibility and accountability as Conservatives to promote Conservative principles (such as self-reliance and independence from government) in the process.

And that’s exactly the kind of attitude the kind of comments Tbone has been making displays!

Want to fail? Believe that it can’t be done! The self-fulfilling prophecy principle will ensure that failure follows.

Sighs...nowhere did I even sniff the words "lost cause"...

APA Guy (Diary) Saturday, January 7th at 4:09PM EST (link)

STOP with the hyperbole, please. Most African-American Democrats aren’t a “lost cause”…they have simply been infected with a mindset not unlike that of a spoiled child. That mindset says “Nothing is my fault. I’m not obligated to work hard…and my failure in life is always someone else’s fault.”

Want to fail, lineholder? Keep promising to continue funding entitlements and programs that discourage hard work, shun responsibility, and encourage a culture of laziness and blame. We need to bring these voters in by TELLING THEM THE TRUTH, not making promises that bankrupt the country.

Not sure if we’re on the same page at this point, but that’s my take.

The unemployment rate for black people is running higher than the national average…much higher in many cases, particularly for those in inner cities areas.
In that context, the ideas of jobs versus food stamps could appeal to a lot of this sector of our society.

The NAACP knows it too and sees it as a threat, which is why they are attempting to discredit Newt with the charge of “racism”.

Blacks would have broken with Obama...

renl57 Saturday, January 7th at 7:09AM EST (link)

…except for one obvious factor.

In 1979, blacks became so unhappy with the parlous state of the economy under Carter that the Congressional Black Caucus broke with Carter and supported Ted Kennedy’s bid to take the Dem nomination in 1980 away from Carter.

And Roy Innis of the Congress for Racial Equality (CORE), which had pitched itself as a more militant alternative to the NAACP, endorsed Reagan for President.

If the current Dem President were white, you would have seen exactly that kind of revolt against his economic policies.

Obama is holding on to the black vote entirely by appeals to race. Blacks won’t abandon The First Black President ™.

That's not necessarily true, renl57

lineholder (Diary) Saturday, January 7th at 2:19PM EST (link)

Black liberals have promoted their policies within the black community for years on end by standing on the basic principles of unity, loyalty and solidarity. The type of policies that have been implemented by the Obama administration have had a devastating economic impact on our society, but specifically on the black community in inner city areas.

The Black Congressional Caucus has made repeated appeals to Obama to intervene in the behalf of the black community, and the response they received was to “stop whining”.

In other words, what the black community is being told is to shut up and stay loyal to the cause, regardless of how much hardship they or their children might be forced to endure.

Loyalty is a two-way “street”, so to speak. The loyalty of the black community is being “rewarded” with a scope of negative consequences that is plunging them even deeper into poverty and increasing dependency on government.

In the context of reality, this is exactly what the left wants, because it furthers their own political agenda. And there are members of the black community who are beginning to see this truth for exactly what it is.

Will their loyalty to Obama as the First Black President hold true? I honestly do not know, but I think a lot of questioning is taking place in the black community that could alter the outcomes more than the Dems would like to believe.

We have to make a serious effort

stumpy Saturday, January 7th at 12:24AM EST (link)

to win the support of blacks. Obviously it needs to be weighted by the number of potential votes we could win, but someday we will be able to crack the block vote mentality. The GOP has had several prominate blacks in office. This year was the first ever serious black presidential candidate. These things slowly, but surely will crack the edges.

At some point more blacks will start to realize that their standard of living has regressed compared to other races over the last several decades, primarily due to the welfare state and government policies that promote and facilitate single parent homes, joblessness and higher crime rates.

Another factor will be the Sharp increase in interracial marriages. This exposes new generations to a more varied culture, helping to crack the block mentality.

We will never convince a large percentage of black americans to vote conservative.

When black people look around at their family they see a son or cousin in the military, A Mother or uncle who works for the state government, Another Aunt who works for the Federal government, and some sisters and cousins who are school teachers. And they have a poor relation or two who get federal aid.

Because of affirmative action they are wedded permanently as a people to big government. They will not vote against their own economic self interest.

It's not necessary to win a "large percentage" of the black vote to make a big difference at the polls.

burke Saturday, January 7th at 9:40AM EST (link)

Winning just 20-30% of the black vote would be huge, and that’s entirely possible. For example, taking just 20-30% of the black vote could turn Virginia and North Carolina from purple to red. kyle78, everything you said of “blacks” in your post, particularly the part about having family members serve in the military and work for the government, is true of many white Americans who vote Republican. So it’s not a foregone conclusion that they won’t embrace conservatism. A large percentage of blacks are Christian and socially conservative. Appealing to them as Christian values voters first could begin a discussion about the rest of the Republican platform; some might realize that fiscal conservatism makes a lot of sense to them, too. I doubt every black person would be offended by Newt’s comments here. It’s basically positive: Why shouldn’t they expect more than food stamps and the NAACP grousing about racism?

While this won’t necessarily work against Obama, laying the groundwork for this approach now and using it consistently for a few cycles could make a real difference. Good, honest outreach could set a good precedent now.

…of an America where blacks are able to succeed entirely (or even mostly) on their own.

Because that organization was created–and did its best work–in a time when that was simply not the case.

Blacks, more than any other minority group, were enfranchised entirely through government actions, from the Civil War to Brown v. Board of Education. That’s all that NAACP knows.

And they’re responding to Gingrich the exact way they’ve always responded: “The Federal Government is the only thing standing between us and lynching. Any cuts to the Federal Government and the KKK will come out of the closet again.”

That was true once.

They can’t accept that it’s not true anymore.

“I was amazed at how”. “arbitary election”.

Consider this:

we are baffled and frustrated that blacks will pull out the racist card when we are simply trying to promote conservatism. If we can ignore political (in)correctness long enough to acknowledge that, as a culture, they are not conservatives, then their charge of racism is more understandable.

They aren't liberals either.

No, and I don't think Socialists fits either.

I don’t think any of our political labels fit them properly. I would describe their culture as one that does not consider ambition or independence to be as important as we do in ours. They are quite comfortable being dependent on someone else, yet will blame us for their being in that situation.

tommy, the charge is not "understandable" it is

mbecker908 (Diary) Saturday, January 7th at 5:00PM EST (link)

the last resort of a group of people who’ve run out of excuses and people to blame for their unwillingness to take personal responsibility or hold their “community” to even a basic standard of humanity.

It is "more" understandable

upon realizing that their mindset and lifestyle is in their nature, as a culture. I’m not suggesting that their mindset or lifestyle is or should be acceptable to us. I’m suggesting, for your consideration, that they view our mindset (conservatism) as white man’s way of thinking and that they resent any attempt we make at coercing them to be more like us. They resent anyone from their culture that conforms to ours They are called ‘oreos’ or ‘acting like whitey’ by their own community when one of their own tries to succeed in our society. Blacks, as a culture, are who they are and what they are…just as we are who we are.
