From “Tea Party Revolution” to “It’s Time to Settle”

The Ben Howe Show Podcast on FTR Radio – January 11th Edition

On last night’s show, Co-host Ace of Spades and I celebrated the inevitability of our presidential candidate.  We have been informed that this candidate will be former Governor Mitt Romney.  We are also told that we should be excited about this.  We are not.

On a brighter note, we also discussed Conan the Barbarian vs Conan the Destroyer, who was really the hero in Wall Street, Oliver Stone’s penchant for beating people over the head with the point in his movies, and the importance of shooting pistols while celebrating victory.

Also cancer.

I'm glad I'm not the only one

who think this whole primary is nuts. The only people who’ve voted so far are from Iowa and New Hampshire, and it’s SETTLED?? Two dinky states and Romney is our nominee?? Someone needs to explain that one, cause this is starting to resemble the “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”

It might not be settled but

The polls show what they show and even if someone, anyone at all, sneaks up on Romney in SC, he’s got the most money.

Money may not be everything, but money goes a long way towards hanging on to those poll numbers.

It looks pretty settled because despite what people say here about his poll numbers not being that impressive, they are better than anyone else’s and haven’t bounced around very much.

Oh, you mean the polls conducted mostly by the liberal media? This is a long race, much too early to state that Romney wins. Realize that the majority of GOP voters do NOT want Romney.

voters do NOT want Romney”

In the present field of 6 candidates (down from a high of 9, which included Johnson in the earliest of the debates–I didn’t include Pawlenty), Romney is wanted over any other of the GOP candidates.

I don’t know how Iowa caucus nor NH delegates are alloted so I don’t know so far if Romney has earned a majority or a plurality of delegates, but the point I am making is he_has_more_than_any-other -candidate, more than your own, whoever that is, so what’s your point?

Shouldn’t you have said that “The majority of GOP voters do NOT want (fill in the blank with your candidate’s name)” ?

It would be quite unusual for a single candidate to have a MAJORITY of “GOP voters” in his or her pocket in a field this large, or don’t you follow politics?

The establishment

joey7766 Wednesday, January 11th at 6:41PM EST (link)

I guess were the subjects now, we better do what they say because they might throw us out the plantation! I believe Rick perry has a shot, the party will grow with average people who are church going and were blue dog dems but are tired of obama! I like Perry ! Hope he can get the ground game going. The conservatives are not leaving the republican party, the republicans are leaving the conservatives! How can on small state the size of Houston dictate the entire process!

The Republican party

writescribe Wednesday, January 11th at 7:18PM EST (link)

is indeed leaving conservatives behind in its pursuit of a higher goal: to maintain its own relevance in politics today. Of course, Republicans will use conservatives when it suits their needs (see Boehner, McConnell).

I wanted so badly for Rick Perry to get the nomination. Sadly, I don’t think he has even done well enough to earn the “next in line” designation for 2016. I suspect that’s all anyone is running for in the Republican primary who is not named Romney.

joey&writescribe: Remember this - vote your

conservative choice in the primary and the nominee in the general. Go with your choice, regardless of what the talking heads and polls say – neither are always accurate, and some are out-and-out phony.

joey7766 Wednesday, January 11th at 9:31PM EST (link)

Exactly if the perry campaign can hang on till Texas can play a role he just might, and not let the media force Romney on everyone! It’s sad to see people swallow what everyone promises when perry is actually doing! Perry served for Gods sake! The hardest thing any other canadite has done is play with G.I. Joe toys. To good to serve but good enough to command someone to die for them

Yep, joey - Perry has always been my choice and

pttx333 (Diary) Wednesday, January 11th at 9:46PM EST (link)

will remain so until the very end. Yes, he served in the military as a pilot and, as my Governor, is currently Commander-in-Chief of the Texas National Guard – a mighty fine one at that. He isn’t a loser; otherwise, why would he have won three terms as Governor (a record, by the way) of Texas.

Bottom line, he will remain my choice through thick and thin, because he is the only one with the character, honesty, creds and work ethic to get the massive clean-up required after b.o. is gone.

He’ll hang on – there is a lot of bashing going on right now – just hang in there, joey.

Good

joey7766 Wednesday, January 11th at 9:56PM EST (link)

Glad to see people have their head on right still! Perry is going after Romney and newt the nuke is going in hard, Romney won’t survive!

It is good, joey. Romney has been running

pttx333 (Diary) Wednesday, January 11th at 10:06PM EST (link)

for election for many years – not working, just practicing, being coached, etc. He’s never gotten above about 25% of the vote (exception being NH, but that DOES NOT count) and never will. He is just … unappealing … to me, and I’m not the only one. Sort of an oil can Harry type of guy.

we need to select one non-romney!

texasdad (Diary) Wednesday, January 11th at 6:54PM EST (link)

I am a Perry fan.. however, I don’t think I want another GWBush, Dole, or McCain as our president so if its not going to be romney, we should get behind someone…. What I am asking for is a conservative agreement and we all get behind that person to take on romney and then obummer… We cannot have the conservative vote split or we will get nowhere!!!

Texasdad

greyeagle Wednesday, January 11th at 9:06PM EST (link)

Perry is certainly not a Bush, Dole or McCain. See how SC and Florida plays out first. Romney will not play well in Florida.

Some comments here suggest that there are folks who will vote according to the latest poll. What

pttx333 (Diary) Wednesday, January 11th at 7:55PM EST (link)

I don’t understand is … why? Do you not have at least a bent toward someone other than Romney? Polls and talking heads tell you to vote a certain way, so that is what you will do?

P.A.T.H.E.T.I.C.

one conservative needed...

texasdad (Diary) Wednesday, January 11th at 8:04PM EST (link)

What I wish we had was an agreement between the conservatives that they go against each other and only one survives to challenging the RINOs.. we cannot have the conservative vote splintered… Of course I hope its Perry, but the votes and money must be consolidated…

It is pathetic, but

stumpy Wednesday, January 11th at 10:33PM EST (link)

it is accurate. Way too many sheeple, don’t cares and intentionally ignorant. The “Romney is the most electable” arguement is the height of stupidity. Romney is the least electable, except mainly Paul. He will he Obama’s favorite candidate.

I’m considering moving Paul above Romney in my order. He was the only one behind him. At least Paul will fight to reduce the government size. As Jim Demint said, we will all be forced to have Tom Paul’s foreign policy if we go broke. Romney will simply reduce the acceleration off the cliff.

Bush defeats Reagan in rematch

OCBill (Diary) Wednesday, January 11th at 8:00PM EST (link)

Romney’s ascendancy effectively completes the rollback of the Reagan legacy. It will be as though Bush won the nomination in 1980. True, Ron Paul (!!!) outperforms Romney among the very independents that are supposed to be important to winning the general election, but pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

What’s more important is that we recognize the wisdom of the Republican establishment and get behind our nominee, Bob Dole. Er, I mean John McCain. Strike that, I mean Mitt Romney.

That’s right, the same Mitt Romney who said as governor that when president someday, he would be a strong Pro-Choice voice from within the Republican party. The Mitt Romney who thinks the individual mandate (mandatory responsibility) is a conservative philosophy. The Mitt Romney who, before the auto bailouts, promised big government support for the Big Three auto companies (hey, I guess as long as government picks winners that have lots of votes in big primary states, it’s okay).

The Republican establishment never really liked Reagan. Now, they will have wiped out the last remnants of his legacy, at least domestically.

You can’t afford the price of free corn.

It's not time to settle

Donald Ayotte (Diary) Wednesday, January 11th at 8:02PM EST (link)

I’ve just recently bought and read Saul Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals,” that was renamed from “Rules for Revolution” and the revolution is just beginning. I am wondering why everyone is so intensely shallow.
It’s as if everyone on this blogsite is willing to believe that if we stay focused on one guy for president that an absolute miracle will happen and America will be restored to perfection as a republic.
Obama is currently amassing a billion dollars to commit massive voters fraud.
Hello!! are you listening; these guy mean to destroy our freedom and our republic and you guys are in la la land. Wake up and get a grip!!

It’s time to settle? Are you serious. C’mon, are you patriots or not?

consolodate our voice!

texasdad (Diary) Wednesday, January 11th at 8:07PM EST (link)

I am not settling or giving up.. I just wish we could consolidate our voice and money… The tea party conservative movement is growing and will take time but we will never get to where we need to go with a splintered voice..

Many of us are not selling our

Donald Ayotte (Diary) Wednesday, January 11th at 8:26PM EST (link)

or giving up but settling for second best is as good as giving up. The revolution is alive and well but our votes may mean nothing if massive voter fraud is prevalent in the 2012 election.
I don’t know how we can defeat a president that will refuse to give up power even if his defeated in the 2012 election. The president has recently signed NDFAA, a bill that gives the military and police broad powers to arrest, detain and imprison Americans without the benefit of counsel or trial by jury. This violate and negates the 4th,5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th Amendment of the Constitution.
When you are taken and imprisoned without a voice, you have no rights!!!!!

Mr. Ayotte, I'm glad to see

that at least one other conservative has picked up and read Alinsky’s book. I am also glad to see you take the long-term view.

So, I’m curious: what have you learned from Alinsky and do you have suggestions for how to implement our agenda?

The problem is, our big names sat this one out. Romney is, by default, the best of a lightweight field.

nvrepub (Diary) Wednesday, January 11th at 8:09PM EST (link)

Big names

texashistorian (Diary) Wednesday, January 11th at 8:42PM EST (link)

are overrated. Rick Perry was a “big name” and look what a sustained barrage of negative attention and attacks from other campaign did to his “big name” (yes he made errors, and oh how they were magnified and turned into narrative). There isn’t a man-jack in the GOP at this moment with a big name who doesn’t have some flaw or irregularity. Pence, Ryan, Daniels, Jindal, Christie, Palin- name whoever you like and they’ll get the same treatment. Then, once their humanity is exposed, we conservatives will all complain that none of the good ones got in the race. Our field is fine, more than fine, outside of Romney and Luap Nor. I refuse to let the media shape my choices, or tell me who is a qualified candidate. None of us should.

The study of history is a powerful antidote to contemporary arrogance. It is humbling to discover how many of our glib assumptions, which seem to us novel and plausible, have been tested before, not once but many times and in innumerable guises; and discovered to be, at great human cost, wholly false.

There was no big name with Romney's money or connections

tonotisto Thursday, January 12th at 3:01AM EST (link)

There was no big name with Romney’s money or connections.

The wheels were already greased. The establishment had set the path. The word was put out “Romney is the most electable”.

That is why they didn’t try.

Everything was going great before a true outsider from Texas entered. He threatened to upset the plan.

Release the Romney’s attack dogs (especially a female one from Minn).

After that Newt was nuked and the rest is history.

Now we are back on plan.

I think you need to seriously consider just

usedtobelib Thursday, January 12th at 12:54PM EST (link)

how much “our big names” should be considered “heavyweights.”

After all, what might they lack in character that they chose to “sit this one out”?

Do they fear failure? Would one who fears failure make a good President?

Do they shrink from the physical and emotional grind of campaigning? Would one who thinks campaigning is hard be ready to stand up to the emotional and physical rigors of being President?

Do they fear scandals? Are those fears justified? Would their Presidency we weakened if scandals came to light?

What? Why? Why did they “sit it out”?

Maybe they are not the people you think them to be. It’s easy to sit on the sidelines and have others think you to be great.

What's disheartening

…isn’t so much that we’re being told to settle, but *who’s* telling us to do it. People with reputations of being shoot-from-the-hip conservative firebrands have been advocating the coronation of Romney since well before Iowa, and I half expect that if they get their way after SC and Romney goes on to lose the general, they’ll blame it on us stupid voters dragging on the process too long.

I can almost hear it now: well if you’d all given up sooner Romney wouldn’t have been in a position to make that “firing” comment…

At least we know how Obama is going to stick it to us! the way Romney is going to stick it us will hurt us even more! I guess history doesn’t matter ! If they stick it to you in the past they might just do it again, any but Obama and any but Romney! Miracales can happen, perry is hitting hard in S.C. Its in gods hands. Im venting! all talking heads are on the Romney train! The hard hitting attack on Romney might change the outcome!

whose fault is it that we have to settle on Romney?

earlgrey (Diary) Wednesday, January 11th at 10:03PM EST (link)

Republicans have gone from one non-Romney to another trying to find somone to throw their support behind. Perry messed up. I don’t konw how he repairs that.

Newt’s character and baggage made him sort of a wild card from the start. He has done nothing to make himself more likable or more convincing a candidate, and going after Romney on Bain was just a bad idea — especially when there were so many other lines of attack that would appeal to real conservatives.

Herman Cain obivously had the character and scandal issues.

Michelle Bachmann lost considerable credibility with how she hounded away at the Guardasil issue with Perry and I am stil wondering if she was trying to take Perry down to protect Romney.

Ron Paul isn’t acceptable for a number of reasons , but some people are apparently so desparate that he is appealing to them. We should take that seriously and follow DeMint’s advice to see if there can be some way to insert the less controversial (stay away from foreign policy) aspects of his campaign.

Santorum seems to support big government as well.

Personally, I wanted Daniels, than I went to Pawlenty, than I went to Perry and now I am without a home. 58% of Republicans wish there was someone else to consider in the race.

We want Ronald Reagan, but we don’t have him. I do wonder though if Ronald Reagan woudl have been more effective with a republican house and republican senate. I just don’t think the conservative movement should rise and fall on one man’s (or (woman’s) shoulders

It's Herman Freaking Cain's Fault

jakeofalltrades (Diary) Wednesday, January 11th at 10:09PM EST (link)

He should have known better than to run for president, and his entry ruined the front-runnership of the best candidate in the race.

Cain, to the last, I will grapple with thee… from Hell’s heart, I stab at thee! For hate’s sake, I spit my last breath at thee!

Sorry not Herman's fault...

HAD to settle, it would be no one’s fault other than my own … out of my own desperation.

So, with me, it always has been Perry and will remain that way all the way. No wavering, no flopping around, no gasping, just standing strong … that is my way.

Really

joey7766 Wednesday, January 11th at 10:47PM EST (link)

Im not perfect and I don’t expect anyone to perfect, Rick Perry is doing what we all are looking for not promising like others, Actions speak louder than words. Only have faith in god not politicians they are going to stick it to you one way or another! I look at the past and then judge perry is doing not just promising! By the way Texas is on the to having another budget surplus of 1.6 billion! Who else anywhere has managed the worlds 13th largest economy In the whole world with a surplus like that? Not Cain, Bachman, Romney, santorum,Gingrich, Paul, Palin, Ryan,Rubio,Barbour, huntsman,? Why cant Americans look at that! That is what matters! actions! Actions! Not empty promises by people who have never done it! Granted they are great people, but have they done anything like that!

I will never, ever

stumpy Wednesday, January 11th at 10:41PM EST (link)

settle for Romney. I will vote for anyone still in the race. If no one is left, I will vote for someone who alteration withdrew. If Romney wins the nomination, I will vote for him while holding my nose and prepare for 4 more years of fighting.

Iowa and NH are less relevant that ever

unclefred (Diary) Wednesday, January 11th at 11:08PM EST (link)

Do not misunderstand me, I think that Iowa and NH serve a very real purpose. They are the last bastions of retail politics in the nation.

That said. With NH’s open primary, and proportional delegate awards, they can no more decide the primary than my beloved dog, who died in 2007.

Don’t blame Iowa or NH, blame the media, If people hold true to who they want, and remain unswayed by polls and pundits, this primary can last until June.

I friend of mine in NH really liked Newt, but voted for Mitt in the primary because he did not think that Newt would do well, and then pointed to the result as justification. I asked him if every one used the same logic how would it ever be different?

This will be a long primary. Support the candidate you really want. Don’t complain because this is hard or fails to meet your view of fairness. Work for your choice. Heck maybe we’ll get a brokered convention. Wouldn’t that be interesting?

About 160 kids from n.c. Are bringing their passion to the S.C race to help Perry out! They are college kids, and even they are smart enough to see that perry is the true conservative! Maybe it does not matter, but I see that as significant! Perry needs strike force next, and just maybe the tea party will give the much needed re-bound he seeks because if he gets close to the top of S.C. standingonthewall Thursday, January 12th at 10:56AM EST (link)

I’m clinging to my Bible, my guns and to the Rick Perry candidacy until it is officially over – by voting – not by polls or pundits. If that doesn’t pan out I’ll go for Newt if he’s still in the race. I will not give Romney anything but grief until after the convention.
