Daily Links – January 24, 2012

Today is January 24th. On this date in 1899, Humphrey O’Sullivan patented the rubber heel. I don’t really know what that is all about, but it sounds hilarious. Also on this date in AD 41, Roman Emperor Caligula was assassinated. Guy threw some serious parties, which likely would have been more fun without all the murdering. “Hey look, cake! Now I wish I hadn’t just stabbed Bob. Bob loved cake.” Therefore, it is with heavy hearts that we hereby dedicate today’s post to Bob. He loved cake. OPEN THREAD.

Huge Gingrich bounce in Florida | Unlikely Voter
“When word came out of InsiderAdvantage’s new Florida poll, I said to myself ‘I’ve heard this story before.’ Newt Gingrich shooting up like a rocket, but confirmation is needed.” (Note, this article is from prior to last night’s “debate”)

IMF to World: Gird Your Loins | RealClearWorld
“The International Monetary Fund is out with its latest forecast and it expects the global recovery to stall. The above video does a nice job summarizing the findings, but the nickle version is that it’s all Europe’s fault.”

‘A $1 million contract at Freddie was chump change.’ | Jim Geraghty
“A Morning Jolt reader who was a consultant for Freddie Mac offers a bit of perspective on what he saw there”

Obama the promise breaker | Washington Times
“2011 was no Sputnik moment, it was the president’s Solyndra moment”

Congressman grills Park Service on Occupy camping | Washington Examiner
“‘Let me tell my constituents who want to visit DC this summer that they can come to any park they want to as long as they say they are protesting.’ said Gowdy. ‘Can I tell them that?’”

Today’s word of the day comes from Merriam-Webster.
spathe: noun a sheathing bract or pair of bracts partly enclosing an inflorescence and especially a spadix on the same axis.

Thanks for clearing that up, dictionary. I think I understand the word even less now.

The two links no supporter of Newt Gingrich wants to see:

Democrats spending millions attacking Romney in Florida. Gee, I wonder why.

Actually, the Rasmussen showing Gingrich down by 9pts to Obama was taken Jan 21 – 23.

Down 9 points is presuming, of course, that Gingrich doesn’t LOSE an argument with the next reporter he picks a fight with.

Global recovery to stall, you mean there was one?

That’s what happens when you take a nap.

Newt was paid to be quiet

montani (Diary) Tuesday, January 24th at 5:08PM EST (link)

I myself both work on consulting contracts and write consulting contracts. I’ve read through Newt’s contract with Freddie. No deliverables were specified. No amount of time spent was required. It reads neither like a fixed cost nor a time and expense consulting contract. The Non-disclosure portion is almost nonexistent.

There are two key portions of the contract. One is that Newt’s company is paid $300k per year with. Freddie had the sole right to increase payment or the term (section 3b). Second the contract would end if Newt worked for anyone involved in the mortgage business or with the two agencies relevant to Freddie. That’s in sections 9b and 9c.

Freddie simply wanted Newt on it’s payroll so they could veto anything (Sect. 9a) Newt might want to advocate. It’s a hush money contract.

montani, how is it hush money when Newt

publicly told House Repubs to vote against the bailout of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac?

J.C. Watts, former chairman of FM Policy Focus, a lobbying company that pushed for more federal oversight of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, says Gingrich never lobbied. Full article re Watts’ statements:

Watts Says Gingrich Never Lobbied FM

The woman saith unto him, I know that Messiah cometh (he that is called Christ): when he is come, he will declare unto us all things. (John 4:25)

I never said he lobbied

montani (Diary) Tuesday, January 24th at 11:50PM EST (link)

I said he was paid NOT to work on the behalf of “any entity whose business involves origination, insurance, acquisition, of residential mortgage loans…” per section 9c.

Read it for yourself, http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/post/newt-gingrich-releases-freddie-mac-contracts-read-them-here/2012/01/23/gIQACz35LQ_blog.html

Newt wasn’t paid for any deliverable. He wasn’t paid for any amount of time. He was paid by Freddie Mac so they could have a hook in him. There’s no meat in the contract only hook.

Keep updating us about the Roman Emperors. It’s good to remember where EmperorNewt got his inspiration.
