Gov. Rick Perry has released his second positive ad this week. First, there was the t.v. ad he started running Wednesday in Iowa simply called “Creating Jobs“. You might have missed that one since people were instead focused on attempts to make an issue out of debates, or the President’s birth certificate.
Today he releases an ad titled “Cut, Balance and Grow“. This one highlights his Cut, Balance and Grow plan and is gushing with an optimistic vision for America.
Hopefully this ad can break through the media narrative of the Governor being an angry conservative who lacks vision. His plan, as evident in the video, has inspired people like Steve Forbes, Steven Hayes, Rep. Paul Ryan, Rush Limbaugh, and the Wall Street Journal.
The only question is whether the voters are willing to give this optimistic vision a chance and listen to the message rather than focus on the media narrative that is being pushed about Gov. Perry.

Great New Perry Ad
bzip Friday, October 28th at 3:35PM EST (link)This is a wonderful ad that goes directly to the message and the heart of what needs to be said by Perry.
My hat is off to Perry. Perry has laid out a wonderful vision for the future with Perry’s Cut, Balance, Grow plan and Perry’s energy plan.
Perry has the experience (10 years as the Texas Governor) and the know how to get this country back on its feet again.

I like Perry but . . .
booboola7896 Saturday, October 29th at 10:04PM EST (link)I wish he sounded more intelligent when he speaks. In a debate or an interview, there always is a pregnant pause between the question and the answer like gears grinding in his head. This may be mean and I am sorry for telling the truth, but this slowness does not create an aura of confidence. Better not be slow when dealing with Putin or his ilk or they will run all over or around you. Romney, Cain, Santorum and Gingrich do not have this malady.
I guess Perry could run around with a teleprompter like Obama
izoneguy (Diary) Saturday, October 29th at 10:13PM EST (link)Or I guess Rick could go ahh, ahh, ahh like Obama does when off prompter.
It is so funny to hear what people think is important when it comes to a President.
The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.
I couldn't agree more.
d_lamar Saturday, October 29th at 10:22PM EST (link)Apparently the typical voter these days is more interested in being entertained by a smooth talking idiot than finding a candidate who can lead this country.
With blacks, the poor, and the marxists, the only thing important to them to get their vote is whether there’s a D on the party affiliation.
With the independents, and some conservatives, it’s more important that they be entertaining debaters.
Lord help us.
I agree as well
booboola7896 Saturday, October 29th at 10:36PM EST (link)Better to have an idiot in the office who is ideologically pure than to have a conservative who can think on his feet and get something done.

iidvbii Saturday, October 29th at 11:10PM EST (link)Perry’s record leading one of the largest most complex economies in the world for the last decade with anyone you like. Only an idiot would suggest his success is anything other than proof positive he is the best candidate. Perry has spent his life in service of his community, state and country. From eagle scout and air force pilot (guess they let a lot of stupid people fly military air craft) to governor and hopefully president Rick Perry has the background, experience and character necessary to fulfill the funtions of the office. No one else in the field can honestly say that. No one else in the field. Frankly I am sick of air headed twits suggesting a single term failed governor or an ex pizza salesman with a catchy marketing phrase are as qualified as Rick Perry.

Texas Government
booboola7896 Sunday, October 30th at 10:55AM EST (link)Complex maybe, but the governor of Texas has very little to do with it. Texas has a weak governor structure, so all of the heavy lifting in terms of legislation and regulation is done by the Texas Legislature which only meets for a short time each spring. Budgets are developed and approved by the legislature every two years so the next time it will be dealt with is 2013. The governor doesn’t do much except to send nominees to the legislature for approval. Perry has stacked the deck on that front with friends and contributors – if you question that ask anyone who lives in Texas and after a little prodding they will admit that is true.
Perry didn’t eliminate the income tax or create an extremely business friendly regulatory environment. Those were in place well before he was conceived in West Texas. Although you may not want to admit it, an untrained monkey could be elected governor of Texas and do well, as long as the monkey runs as a
Republican since the legislature is two thirds GOP.

Cain is heading to Washington this coming week
Scope (Diary) Sunday, October 30th at 7:17PM EST (link)He is heading up to the Washington way, even though I thought Cain was running a very different campaign, relying only on the grassroots to put him at the top. Ha. I don’t care how much people think anyone running for the president, or any national office, don’t have to go through Washington at some point they are delusional. Cain is going to speak before the American Enterprise Inst., and will try to explain to them what his plan plan is. He will also be talking to the national press, hahahahaha. Good luck with that for a non-politician, trying to enter the politician’s world. Can’t get around it, even Cain recognizes that.
From an article currently posted at the Hill- “Cain has insisted that the rapid fire and antognistic style of the Republican debates have not given him the ‘opportunity to explain 999 without 6 other attacks at the same time, if you know what I mean.” That is so rich it defies comprehension. Herman, now do you realize how Perry has been attacked by those same R candidates on the stage, has not been allowed to answer his questions, and has been the pinata since he got into the debates? Herman, the last debate was the first time you had to take incoming from those on the stage. You have to learn how to handle that Herman, just as Perry has been expected to do. A little thin skin there Herman. Hope with all the time in the world in Washington this week that you can explain your 999 plan adequately and sufficiently without asking the audience to go to your website to read the plan. Hope you can now handle the big boys in Washington that you have never yet had to deal with, yet knocked when you started your campaign. That was obviously before you realized you would need there help. Ha. This should be good. No tiredness accepted, and no I didn’t understand the question accepted. Bring it on Herman, let’s see how you do.

booboola, where did you take a Texas goverment class?
retire05 Sunday, October 30th at 11:36AM EST (link)Actually, you are wrong.
The governor of Texas did, at one time, hold a very weak position. The Texas legislature made it that way because of Reconstuction and the fact that the Yankees were stacking the deck to elect their candidates for the governor’s office. So the bulk of power was given to the Lt. Governor, to thwart the Yankees of the Reconstruction era.
All that changed with the election of Ma Ferguson. She lobbied the legislature for more gubernatorial power, and got it.
And the Texas legislature does not met every spring. We have a bi-annual Congress, not an annual Congress. The legislature will not met in 2012, unless the governor calls a special session.
Perry didn’t eliminate state income tax because we have never had one. What he did do was threaten to veto a bill that was in the 2004 Congressional session proposing a state income tax that was being pushed by Democrats. Democrats in Texas are no longer the conservative independents they historically were. Now they are just an extension of the Reid/Pelosi philosophy which is why a number of Texas Dems have switched parties recently.
Also, this is the first time since Reconstrution that Republicans have held a solid majority in the Texas Congress. And no, the atmosphere that has made Texas one of the, if not the, most business friendly states in the Union has not always been in place. Texas used to be a tort lawyer’s heaven. No longer.
Please, if you are going to speak on Texas government, do try to be accurate.
retire05
I concede your point
booboola7896 Sunday, October 30th at 6:44PM EST (link)On the biannual legislature, but it is still true that an untrained monkey could be governor of Texas. I have alot of respect for what the legislature has done, but Perry wasn’t responsible for much of anything except appointing his cronies to state and university boards.
you do it

iidvbii Sunday, October 30th at 12:29PM EST (link)I will not elaborate further than retire05 already has in regards to the governors powers. Retire has the facts already no point in re-stating them. I would point out the duplicity in your attacks and statements however. You attack perry for not exercising considerable power HPV, instate tuition and vetoing a fictious income tax that never existed. Then you try and belittle his accomplishments by declaring him powerless? So basically he is to blame for every perceived problem in Texas as governor but has no right to claim any of Texas’s success because according to you he is a powerless figure head. Yeah that seems fair.
P.S.
I was born in San Saba Texas.
I live in Dallas Texas and have most adult life. I have had the experience of living under Perry leadership for ten years, America would be lucky to have Perry as president.

Keeping it Positive
davidpw Friday, October 28th at 3:37PM EST (link)Great ad. While other conservatives are busy jumping on MSM spin and stories glad to see this post.
I don't know...
clintonformccain Friday, October 28th at 3:37PM EST (link)I think we need to be addressing the really important issues facing our great nation today, like….
childhood vaccinations and stuff.
the issue
westbrook348 Friday, October 28th at 3:55PM EST (link)was never about the vaccine itself, or even opt-in/opt-out. The problem was that Perry used an executive order to bypass the legislature. I’ve had enough of that from Emperor Obama, tyvm.
But it’s a great ad, and Perry would be better than either Romney or Cain, no question about it.
Baloney
clintonformccain Friday, October 28th at 4:15PM EST (link)The issue was always that it was vaccine for a sexually-transmitted disease and that was trumped up as some egregious attack on fam’ly valyoos. Why do you think Bachmann kept haranguing about “little 12 year old girls”?
nope
westbrook348 Friday, October 28th at 4:40PM EST (link)Bachmann kept bringing up little girls because that was her own personal attack strategy. And look where that got her.
You can disagree all you want; certainly there are people who don’t like the idea of mandatory vaccination for STDs. And there have been a lot of lies told about how the vaccine was goign to be “forced” on kids even though clearly there was an opt-out.
But the overwhelming majority of people I’ve talked to were primarily concerned with the political method Perry used. In Perry’s apology, he even acknowledged that the way he tried to circumvent the legislature was inappropriate. So Perry agrees it was an issue, and everyone I know is bothered by it. If executive orders were something he consistently used or insisted on continuing, it would be a major problem for Perry.
But he’s still better than Romney or Cain.
So if it wasn't such a major issue
Scope (Diary) Friday, October 28th at 5:20PM EST (link)then why feel the need to bring it up, and hash an old story yet again? Perry apologized, what does he have to do to get people to understand he made a mistake, slit his wrists in the next national TV appearance?
who are you asking?
westbrook348 Friday, October 28th at 9:34PM EST (link)me or clintonformccain (the person who actually brought it up)?
Of course, if it's all about legislative perogative...
clintonformccain Friday, October 28th at 4:20PM EST (link)Then, I’m sure the same folk are A-OK with the Texas legislature’s decision by a 104-4 vote to let Mexican kids attend Texas colleges rather than electrocuting them. Surely, it would have been wrong for the governor to veto such a clear legislative direction, right?
you're ridiculous
westbrook348 Friday, October 28th at 4:33PM EST (link)of course Perry should’ve vetoed it, and forced the legislature to override the veto. Instead he signed it w/o objection.

westbrook348 Friday, October 28th at 9:45PM EST (link)but you’re wrong.
I don’t “slam” him for “going against” the people on Gardasil – I’m critical of him for using executive orders to do the legislature’s job. Going against the people is actually a good quality for a politician to have, as long as he comes down on the right side of the issue, which Perry didn’t in this case.
I do slam him for going with the will of the people on tuition breaks for illegals, though. We have much better things we could be spending our money on. Texas has a right to do what it wants, but Perry’s now running for national office, and I wany my federal tax money spent more wisely.
Quite frankly I don’t want a president who is focused so much on poll numbers or popular opinion. If I did, I would be supporting Romney, a guy who has no chance of ever getting my vote.
So you want it both ways.

Perry could’ve saved himself a lot of grief by vetoing the tuition bill, and forcing the congress to override him.
Maybe his pander to illegals helps him in the general election. It sure doesn’t help him with me. Especially when he calls me “heartless.”
But again, Perry’s record on jobs, tort reform, and streamlined regulation more than makes up for his shortcomings. Especially when you compare him to the TARP lovers, Romney and Cain.

Better reading comprehension next time on your part, I hope. Seriously. Wouldn’t want to give hardcore Perry fans a bad name. Right now you’re giving me the same treatment Perry did re: the birth certificate. Clintonformccain brought up the vaccine issue. It's a good ad. Now Perry needs to get himself to Iowa and fight, fight, fight
red_oakster (Diary) Friday, October 28th at 5:08PM EST (link)Iowa is do or die for Perry. He needs to finish ahead of Romney there and hopefully in the top two as well. If he can do that, he’s back in the hunt. And to do well in Iowa, he needs to show up at some more debates and do well.

Not true
TWilliams (Diary) Friday, October 28th at 3:55PM EST (link)That is absurd. Rick Perry is the only consistent conservative that has a chance of winning this race. Neither Gov. Perry or his staff ever said he would no longer go to debates that is the main stream media trying to distort things and focus on insider baseball stuff.
Conservatives should not be distracted by media narratives we should focus on records. In that regard Rick Perry wins every time.
Absurd?

Media controls the message

bzip- I don't think Perry was wrong
Scope (Diary) Friday, October 28th at 4:34PM EST (link)to say what he did to O’Reilly. I think he made a very good point when saying that they are serving no other purpose than to get the candidates to tear one another apart. Wallace and Baier were actually some of the worst moderators in creating that kind of atmosphere.
Sure, the Perry detractors will say he is backing away from some of them because he’s a dope and an idiot, and he can’t debate. They are going to say that anyway. You see that here on a daily basis. I would name a few names, but I think you can point to more than just a few that would rather drink dog pee than to support Perry.
As the Matt Lewis article pointed out, those that are watching the debates have mostly jumped on someone’s bandwagon anyway, and none of the candidates are going to win over the MD Democrats who watch it for the entertainment value. Perry is much better off spending his time doing what he does best. Have you noticed how many are admitting that Perry is very good on the stump and with townhalls and speeches?
Just watched Cavuto and Huckabee tear Perry a new one, again. Cavuto said that Perry wasn’t doing any more debates. Huckabee slams him for saying that he won’t be doing any more debates, and says he is not ready for the presidency if he can’t participate in the debates. Cavuto then brings up that there are so many debates, many more than in any other election cycle. Huckabee then proceeds to say that there is no way that these candidates should be attending every one of these debates, and that if he was a candidate, he would certainly pick and choose which ones he would attend. Do you see how disgusting Fox is, and how they are now even spreading rumors and lies?
Perry partially right :-).
bzip Friday, October 28th at 4:44PM EST (link)I don’t think Perry was wrong when he addressed O’Reilly’s question about the debates – Perry was very correct.
What I think might have been wrong is when Team Perry suggested Perry may not do some of the debates. I won’t have done that, I would have selectively pick which debates and announced as they came up which one’s not to attend keeping it quiet till that time.
Because I totally agree with Perry – there are too many debates and its not the best way to make use of your time. He does need to attend some BUT not all of them. That is ridicules for any candidate to attend 22 debates (yes, any and all candidates).

The time for that is past
renl57 Friday, October 28th at 5:02PM EST (link)Way back in September, we knew there were going to be a slew of debates. Back then, a candidate could have objected to doing so many without it reflecting negatively on him.
But Perry didn’t object back then. Even after the first debate, Perry didn’t object to doing more.
He only started objecting after he performed subpar in the first *three* debates. That makes it look like he’s skipping out only because he’s a sore loser: “I’ll take my marbles and go home.”
I don’t respect that, any more than I would respect a baseball pitcher who gives up a few hits and then stalks off the field saying “I don’t want to play anymore.”
Which is exactly the case.
renl57, two points.
Aaron Gardner (Diary) Friday, October 28th at 5:18PM EST (link)1. The primary calendar has changed since September shaving an entire month off of time to campaign.

conservativemusician Friday, October 28th at 4:53PM EST (link)He is smarter than that and I’m sure his advisors will reexamine their recent statements on this. However, I am concerned about how much emphasis is being put on debates this time around. I guess it is the age we live in, but I still think that there are better formats for getting to know the candidates and what they believe. It is difficult for any of them to condense policy positions into 1 minute sound bites (note that even your guy Cain had trouble articulating 999 when Romney attacked him on it at the last debate). If we are not careful, we are going to fall into the trap from 2008 in looking at the how someone says something rather than what they are actually saying. We already have a slick talker and debater in the WH and we have seen where that has gotten us.

Mistakes

The problem is that everytime you think he might be doing something positive to help his campaign he turns around and steps in it like he did with that stupid birther comment earlier this week when the focus should have been on his 20/20 plan. His ads are impressive, but what has everybody been talking about lately? HIS comment about skipping debates! What’s he gonna step in next?

Cain - my best shot
jrhode2873 (Diary) Friday, October 28th at 4:41PM EST (link)My arguments for Cain:
1. On economic policy, I believe he would govern as a Reagan supply-sider. His 999 plan, while not perfect, is certainly an attempt to grow the economy the way a Reagan conservative politician should. Under Cain’s plan, I honestly believe we can make up some of our budget shortfall by growing our way out of it the way Reagan did with massive job growth and expansion of the economy. I’m convinced Cain’s instincts about the economy and creating jobs are the right instincts.
2. On social issues, I think he is intuitively conservative on these things. Look at his record. The man spent a lot of his own money to try and convince blacks to vote for Pro-Life politicians instead of the typical Pro-Choice democrat. That tells me something. I believe he has a “libertarian/states rights” streak in him about social issues but that personally does not bother me.
3. He has the ability to connect with voters in my opinion. He is a likable guy with a great personal story that represents what conservatives believe in – not playing the victim card but using your God-given talents to be productive in society. This ability to connect with voters will serve him well when compared to the dour and often petty Barack Obama. It will also serve him well, when he tries to get the American people on his side to urge Congress to pass difficult pieces of legislation like 999.
There is more, but I’ll leave it at that for now.
To like or to elect
bzip Friday, October 28th at 4:50PM EST (link)Boy you need some learning
.
Economic Plan by Cain:
Cain’s 999 plan raises taxes on 84% of the people, (something that should be a big NO in conservative principles), His plan also creates a new national sales tax.
Social Issues:
It appears with Cain’s abortion flap who really knows where is stands on social issues.
Likeability factor:
Haven’t we learned by Obama, the guy with no experience but was likeable – That we DON’T elect people based on likeablity and certainly with out any experience.
Good grief – could someone actually come up with substance for Cain instead of this “likeability”

Substance
jrhode2873 (Diary) Friday, October 28th at 5:04PM EST (link)I gave you substance and you pooh-poohed it.
1. That was a hit piece on 999 that did not take into account all facets of the plan including provisions for the poor. The Club For Growth has endorsed 999 just like they endorsed Perry’s plan, a fact you Perry supporters conveniently leave out.
2. I gave you substance – dont know what else to say.
3. Likability matters. It helps you to attract cross over appeal without having to abandon your principles. A mean-spirited conservative will accomplish very little as President.

retire05 Friday, October 28th at 4:58PM EST (link)“I believe, I think” is not a reason for voting for someone. And if you want a King of the Prom candidate, Cain is your man.
But not one thing you said showed anything in Cain’s history that tells how he will govern. Not one.
And let me be very clear: 9-9-9 or 9-0-9, which picks and chooses winners and losers regionally, hasn’t got a snowball’s chance in hell of passing. For as much as I dislike Bachmann, she is right; it is another avenue for a Democrat Congress to raise taxes.
And don’t kid yourself, that middle 9 will turn into 18 in my state which, like all other states, is not going to give up its one secure source of revenue that stays in state.
Now, see if you can try again: what in Cain’s history tells you how he will govern?
retire05
There's no doubt...
renl57 Friday, October 28th at 5:11PM EST (link)…that Cain is a conservative. No one can find any evidence of flip-flopping to Democrat or liberal positions in his past history before this year (and I’m sure they tried). Not on social issues, not on economic issues.
There’s also no doubt that Cain won’t cut and run from a stand he feels strongly about. Anyone who can look Stage IV cancer in the eye and defeat it is someone I take my hat off to–and whom I would trust to face down Iran or North Korea or anyone else.
That isn’t his problem.
His problem is that he has to persuade the voters to vote for an amateur–because that’s what he is. He has zero experience in government–not even town council or alderman or something.
He would be an interesting unconventional choice for Vice President. But he’s just not ready to be President.
Why exactly is experience as a politician a good thing?
lightspeed Friday, October 28th at 6:50PM EST (link)As far as I can tell, all they learn is how to lie, cheat and steal. The longer someone is in politics the more corrupt they tend to become. Look at Romney, the slickest politician of the bunch–and the slimiest, changes-his-position-when-he-sneezes, unbashed, flip-flopping, stands-for-nothing wannabe President this world has ever produced. Is that the kind of “experience” we want? I am sick of the cesspool that is Washington and until we start voting for people with principles and character we will be stuck with the same old B.S. So when you criticize Cain for not having any political experience, I say bring it on.
Because everyone else in D.C.
windwaker24 Friday, October 28th at 8:05PM EST (link)knows and has experience in the slimy game of politics. How is sending a newbie to D.C. going to change that? Do you honestly believe that the likes of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are going to wait around and play nice until Cain gets his sea legs? No way. They will give him hell, and if he doesn’t know how the game is played, it’s lights out for Cain. Boehner and McConnell play hardball, so I don’t expect them to go easy on him because he’s new. If they feel Cain is a joke, they probably will just ignore him, do their own thing and tell Cain to shut up and sign.
That's a load of crap

There are exceptions, to be sure, but our Congress voted into law a bill that none of them had read or even knew much about. What kind of experience are you even talking about? What skills do these people really have?
Keep voting for these guys and then wonder why nothing ever seems to change.
The experience I'm referring to...
windwaker24 Saturday, October 29th at 2:04PM EST (link)is dealing with people who don’t like you and don’t always see it your way. Like it or not, there will always be career politicians in office. You don’t fix Washington by sending in someone who doesn’t know how it works. Politics is an egos game. It’s been like that since the founding of this country. Just because Cain will come in as an innocent doesn’t mean everyone is going to go easy on him. Jus. Scalia said it best, there will always be gridlock in D.C. The Founders intended it to be that way. I want someone in D.C. who knows how to work with the system we have, which will have gridlock and dissension all of the time. And from what I’ve seen of Cain, he doesn’t seem to handle dissension and confrontation very well.

conservativemusician Friday, October 28th at 4:30PM EST (link)I’m tired of the pot shot posts about Perry from you and others. You make note of Perry’s mistakes – granted, he has made some. But what more do you want from the guy? He has owned up to the Gardasil flap and he has admitted he’s not a great debater. He’s either too wimpy or too aggressive. Every candidate has flaws – including the one you are supporting (apparently Romney).
And yes, Perry has been under constant attack since he announced from the other candidates as well as the media – some criticism was deserved, others not so much. Why do you think that is? Because he is the most conservative candidate left who has the most experience running a huge state. He is not perfect, but he is by far the most qualified candidate left in the field. He is also not afraid to take the fight to Romney, so I have no doubt he would do the same to Obama in future debates.
Further, Romney deserved to be attacked far more than he was because he was distorting Perry’s record on immigration. The last debate was the first real instance where the gloves were taken off not only by Perry but other candidates as well. He is not above the vetting process – even though he thinks this is supposed to be his coronation and every else should just get out of the way. If you think Perry’s criticism of Romney was unmerited on illegal immigration, then what do you think Obama would do to Romney on this and other issues like Romneycare, for instance? He’s going to tear him apart and he will do anything to smear Romney to get elected.
I make no excuses for Perry and his missteps, but I also know in looking at the totality of his record that he is a solid conservative with a great track record. At least with Perry we know that his basic instincts are conservative. The same cannot be said of Romney and Cain, both of who will have to be pushed in the conservative direction.

Perry's attack on Romney
jrhode2873 (Diary) Friday, October 28th at 4:51PM EST (link)Full disclosure – I’m a Cain supporter who originally leaned Rick Perry when he first got in the race. His attack on Romney was a good example of Perry’s problem. It was obviously a planned attack and he came across as very mean-spirited. Then, after delivering the attack he later complains about the debates being set up to get the candidates to fight each other. Huh?
I like Rick Perry’s politics and his record. But his unfavorables are what they are for a reason. He’s really disappointed as a Presidential candidate. These are not pot shots – they are honest evaluations of him.
Let me be clear, jrhode.

None at all.
If you don’t think that the Dem nominee would go after Romney on immigration, or any other trivia that Mitt piled up in his career, you’re delusional. We, those who are trying to find the best representative candidate, need to see how our champion, whichever one it is, handles some heat. Mitt? Folded.
I give the same credit to Mitt for pushing into Perry’s personal space… but I note that Perry handled that attack much better than he’d handled the pile-ons in the early debates.
Perry no longer seems to wilt under fire. I’ll take that over Mitt-toast any day.

conservativemusician Friday, October 28th at 5:11PM EST (link)As opposed to what they actually believe and how they actually govern? Didn’t we already do this with Obama back in 2008? Again, I am looking for someone who articulates true conservatism – not someone who is the smoothest talker. To me, in spite of his lack of verbal skills in doing so, Perry is the most conservative candidate we have.
You’ve made note that you like Perry’s politics and his record. That’s good and it is my hope and my prayer as we give Perry a second look that others as well will look less at his debating style and more at his record and how he articulates conservative philosophy. jrhode2873 (Diary) Friday, October 28th at 5:36PM EST (link)Perry comes across as mean-spirited. Yes, I’m a Cain-bot.
jrhode,
retire05 Friday, October 28th at 5:48PM EST (link)just how would you have had Perry go after Romney? He pointed out Romney’s duplicity when it comes to illegal immigration, the “issue” that Romney was trying to slam Perry over.
Mean spirted? And you don’t think Romney slamming an entire state (Texas) is mean spirited? I damn sure do. And guess what, if you want to punish kids for the crimes of their parents, you ARE heartless. You are so fixated on an issue that you apparently don’t fully comprehend, you are one of those “load them all up on cattle cars and ship them to Mexico” people.
Here’s also what’s “mean spirited”; creating an entire website to slander and smear one candidate and that candidate’s state, when his own record is left wing and drove his state into high debt.
But still, you can give no cohesive reason for supporting Cain other than “I think, I believe” which just doens’t cut it with most rational thinking voters.
retire05
How about this?
jrhode2873 (Diary) Friday, October 28th at 6:06PM EST (link)He started to go after Romney about his flip-flops in an earlier debate then had a hard time stringing his sentences together and completing his thoughts. His approach was right but he couldn’t quite pull it off. It was painful to watch. He should work on that kind of an attack on Romney, just make sure he completes his sentences next time. That kind of an attack fires up conservatives instead of turning them against him. He has a foil in Romney, but he needs to go about it better.
Btw, Why don’t you make a case for Perry? The same Rick Perry who just 6 weeks ago called a lot of us “heartless”. Go ahead and make your case and convince me that he wouldn’t do that to conservatives if elected. Take your best shot.
You mean the comment that he
beach91 Friday, October 28th at 6:17PM EST (link)later said was wrong, should not have said it and even apologized? Make your case on something current. Ohh and by the way…this whole diary is devoted to the case that Rick Perry is the best conservative. The one with an energy plan, a tax plan, a roll back the regulations plan, a repeal of bad obummer policies plan. I don’t think I missed anything. At least he has a record and is consistent at that. Ohh and BTW, I was about ready to jump on the Cain bandwagon until he said that he would not support Perry or even be a VP for him. He would support Romney though and that should be huge red flags for anyone that is conservative. But maybe you are not.
jrhode, perhaps Perry didn't expect Romney to outright lie
retire05 Friday, October 28th at 6:50PM EST (link)If you will remember the debate, when Perry went after Romney on Romney’s illegal hires, Romney cut him off, rudely. Romney claimed it was ONE op-ed that made those claims. He was lying or is painfully stupid. It was two investigave reports by the Boston Globe, a year apart. Nothing “op-ed” about those articles. And then, Romney had to whine to Anderson Cooper, red faced as he was, to get Perry to stop making Romney look foolish. But later in the debate, Romney had no problem using the same interruption tactic on Rick Santorum that he just whined to Cooper about Perry doing to him. If anything, it should have proved to you just what a hypcrite Romney is. But I think that probably went right over your head.
Now, as to you being “heartless.” If you think punishing children, who were dragged across the border by their parents when they were young, and have never known anything but the U.S. as a home, is the right thing to do, you ARE heartless. And the SCOTUS agrees with me ruling that children are not responsible for the actions of the parents, in Plyler (which included Texas vs. Known and Unknown Alien Children). Would you also hold children responsible for their parents who get busted for drugs, or rob a 7-11? Maybe you would prefer to have those kids understand that living in the U.S., knowing they are not going to be deported unless they commit a really henious crime, is a dead end for them. They will never have the opportunity to further their education and, in the process, become HIGHER paying taxpayers as college graduates generally earn more over their working life and less chance that they will ever commit crimes.
And as a Texan, who has lost friends that have been murdered by an illegal, I will tell you this: I will take an illegal who is willing to hang off the end of a shovel or clean toilets all day to any of the losers who live in our public housing, having babies and not even knowing where the baby daddies are, and never do one sociatal productive thing in their lives but mooch off the rest of us. Perhaps you should look at El Paso, which has a high rate of illegals living there, and it’s crime rate compared to Detroit, or St. Louis, which doesn’t have near the illegals.
So you stick with Cain. And the next commercial you will see out of the Democrats are fried Chinese children hanging on an electrified fence.

is Perry heartless
kaheo Saturday, October 29th at 4:42PM EST (link)for being against the DREAM Act? He seems to be trying to be having it both ways on this issue. He said the kids had to apply for residency as soon as it was possible – this can only be possible if the DREAM Act or similar legislation is passed providing these kids who were brought here out of no fault of their own to be able to get a job after they’re done with college in Texas. I support Perry on the in-state tuition, but then am puzzled as to what he expects the poor kids to do after they graduate?
the national Dream Act was blanket amnesty.
gekster (Diary) Saturday, October 29th at 4:51PM EST (link)The Texas dream Act only applies to kids who have been in Texas for at least three years, graduated High School, pass the entrance exam for a collage,
pay thier own way for collage, apply for citizenship, and only applies to them, not to relatives and such.
There is a huge difference.
And the Texas Dream Act was brought up by a Texas legislature,
not by Perry, and was signed by Perry after vetoe proof passage.

gekster, I fully understand
kaheo Saturday, October 29th at 5:23PM EST (link)the huge difference between a Texas Statute and a Federal Law providing a path to legal status. And if you understood my comment: I understand its qualification requirements and also the overwhelming support it had in the legislative body. I support Perry and Texas on passing the statute.
Perry has stated numerous times that it was a good law and he stands by it. He has not once stated something to effect that he would ever support its repeal. Has he?
These kids deserve a decent education. The statute had a requirement that these students would pledge to apply for residency as soon as possible. Having a college degree does not grant anyone legal status in this country and neither does the Texas Statute. Federal laws can but not in there present state. My understanding of US Immigration Law (am not a lawyer though so maybe am totally wrong) is that there’s no path to legal status for illegal/undocumented immigrants whether educated or not. If am wrong, I’d like you to point me to the Federal laws that provide this path that these kids can gladly use after they’re done with college.
I can understand if Perry is against the DREAM Act in the exact wording/content with which it was drafted and debated in the Senate, but it seems like Perry equates creating a path to legal status with amnesty and opposed it for that reason. If am wrong on this too, please point me to some evidence showing that Perry supports a Federal law that would provide a path to legal status (residency & eventually citizenship) to undocumented students.
To you gekster: Does allowing these kids to pursue legal status ie residency or a sort of work visa equate to amnesty?
simply put, no.

so back to my question(s)
kaheo Sunday, October 30th at 1:14AM EST (link)Isn’t Perry trying to have it both ways by asking these kids to apply for legal status but at the same time not wanting them to get legal status? That to me is heartless. These kids have grown up here, they pretty much don’t know any other country.
He felt so sorry for the kids but only wants them to get an education but how dare they ask for legal status after completion of college!
I ask you again – Why would Perry still stand by the Texas Statute in the name of “having a heart” but not want these kids to be legal after school? So what would President Perry do? He’s not mentioned deporting them, and neither have the other candidates. I wonder why?
If Perry came out and said: I only signed it because there was a veto proof majority and thus had no choice, if not I would not have supported in-state for illegal immigrants under different circumstances, it would be understandable to me. Instead he has defended it and re-defended it but at the same time been steadfast against providing them legal status if he had the chance at the federal level.
If Perry moves up in the polls, and I’m pretty confident he will after Cain implodes in the next few weeks, expect this to be an issue that will be brought up especially more so if his chances of becoming nominee become higher. I don’t see how he can continue having it both ways – pandering to Hispanics who are sympathetic to these kids, while pandering to the base who want to hear none of this path to legal status, or as you called it – amnesty!
and also please note
kaheo Sunday, October 30th at 1:21AM EST (link)These kids cannot apply for citizenship. There is no provision to do so under current federal law illegal immigrants. That was the main goal of the DREAM Act. You and others call it Amnesty, and that’s fair game, but don’t try to fool anyone that these kids can magically become permanent residents under the current system without DREAM Act or similar legislation. That is the same reason the statute clearly said “Apply for residency as soon as possible”, meaning as soon as DREAM Act or similar legislation was passed.
kaheo, go and look up....

i have read and re-read the statute
kaheo Sunday, October 30th at 10:42AM EST (link)and you have avoided answering my questions just the same way all the candidates have avoided answering this same question – what dp we do with the 12 million or so illegal immigrants. Yes the statute says they should sign a pledge (not even a legal binding document) with the University that they will apply for residency (not citizenship btw) as soon as it is possible for them – meaning – whenever the federal laws are changed to allow them to do so.
I mean do you or anyone else think that these kids have the option to apply for residency but for some reason have chosen not to because they’re only interested in education? Is that why the Texas Statute was forcing or encouraging them to do so otherwise they would just prefer to stay in their illegal status after getting an education?
You seem to believe that illegals can apply for residency but you won’t show me the laws which they would use to do so. Why? Perhaps because there are none?
I think you need to read the statute as you keep confusing residency & citizenship as well.

All I can tell you is.....
gekster (Diary) Sunday, October 30th at 11:05AM EST (link)The Texas law applies to Texas.
Amnesty is given with no strings attached.
The Texas law has strings.
And regardless of if they get to become citizens or not, they are still residents.
Federal law has already stated many times over that the states cannot deport them.
And one would think that these particular children, who have gotten into Texas through no fault of thier own, want a higher education, then one would have to believe that they would also want to gain citizen status.
US citizens don’t have to jump through the same hoops as the illegal kids to get the instate rate.
Thier only requirement is to live in Texas for one year, where as the illegals
have to have been in Texas for three.
As far as the national stage, Perry is quite clear on that, as he has stated many times over that the Feds should enforce the laws on the books.
Secure the border first, then deal with the 12 million illegals here.
We don’t have an illegal immigrant problem, we have an illegal immigrant enforcement problem.
As far as reading the statute, when the subject first came up, when Perry was only thinking about getting into the race, I studied it then, and probably know more about it than most Texans.
And if you know about the statute, as you say, then maybe you are just stringing me along, and your questions are just trolling.

Not sure what you are saying, kaheo. Are you hinging your statement on "convert to " rather than "apply for" citizenship?
avagreen Sunday, October 30th at 1:08PM EST (link)The DREAM Act, recently reintroduced in the Senate, aims to address this heart-breaking issue by giving kids in this situation a path to citizenship. To qualify, a person must have entered the U.S. prior to the age of 16 (and be under 30), have been here for at least five years, and have a high school diploma or been accepted into college. Once they obtain their temporary status, which lasts up to six years, they must complete college, or two years of military service, to be eligible for permanent residence.
If I’m correctly understanding what you are saying, then no one can apply for citizenship, which I think was the purpose of this original debate.
Correct me I’m wrong.
Perry’s requiring that each illegal immigrant student apply for citizenship to become eligible for in-state tuition in Texas…….which seems to gel with the federal law I mentioned above.

avagreen you were right until
kaheo Sunday, October 30th at 2:09PM EST (link)you wrongly stated that the Texas statute required these kids to apply for citizenship before they could qualify for Texas in-state tuition. Completely FALSE. The statute required them to sign a pledge to apply for permanent residency as soon as it was possible for them to do so. The Texas legislature probably understood that there was no way these kids could apply for residency/citizenship without the Federal laws being amended thus the “as soon as possible” text.
You are absolutely right on the objective of the national DREAM Act, but it failed, therefore whatever it sort to achieve is not reflected in current Immigration laws. If these kids can apply for citizenship without DREAM act type of legislation, that would render it redundant, wouldn’t it?
Avagreen: This is what I’ve been asking gekster. Is there a provision in our current Immigration law that would allow an illegal immigrant to convert to legal status ie permanent residency and eventually citizenship if they wish? To the best of my knowledge there is none. You and gekster seem to imply that am wrong and that these kids can actually apply for legal status. Please show me this path for them and I rest my case.
let me also add
kaheo Sunday, October 30th at 2:26PM EST (link)some info about how the AOS (Adjustment of Status) works under current US Immigration Law. Anyone in the US or outside the US can certainly put in their application for permanent residency(Just the same way anyone can apply for a high limit credit card!). Their application can only be considered and potentially approved ONLY if there’s a provision in the Immigration Nationality Act to grant them some legal status.
If the USCIS finds out they’re illegally in the country, the application is instantly terminated and removal proceedings ensue for the applicant. It doesn’t matter if you have a college degree, they will not grant an illegal immigrant legal status based on education.
One key problem, kaheo. Removal proceedings do NOT take place.

To be padantic here: Looks like anyone who has lived for 3 years in Texas prior to getting in-state tuition, which applies to anyone else in the U.S. who has done the same, according to Federal law which is listed below the Texas Code.
avagreen Sunday, October 30th at 3:17PM EST (link)Texas code for in-state tuition:
Sec. 54.052. DETERMINATION OF RESIDENT STATUS. (a) Subject to the other applicable provisions of this subchapter governing the determination of resident status, the following persons are considered residents of this state for purposes of this title:
(1) a person who:
(A) established a domicile in this state not later than one year before the census date of the academic term in which the person is enrolled in an institution of higher education; and
(B) maintained that domicile continuously for the year preceding that census date;
(2) a dependent whose parent:
(A) established a domicile in this state not later than one year before the census date of the academic term in which the dependent is enrolled in an institution of higher education; and
(B) maintained that domicile continuously for the year preceding that census date; and
(3) a person who:
(A) graduated from a public or private high school in this state or received the equivalent of a high school diploma in this state; and
(B) maintained a residence continuously in this state for:
(i) the three years preceding the date of graduation or receipt of the diploma equivalent, as applicable; and
(ii) the year preceding the census date of the academic term in which the person is enrolled in an institution of higher education.
(b) For purposes of this section, the domicile of a dependent’s parent is presumed to be the domicile of the dependent unless the person establishes eligibility for resident status under Subsection (a)(3).
THE FEDERAL LAW:
Federal Law Title 8, Chapter 14, Sec. 1623 states:
“an alien who is not lawfully present in the United States shall not be eligible on the basis of residence within a State… for any postsecondary education benefit unless a citizen or national of the United States is eligible for such a benefit.”
SO, ANYONE WHO HAS RESIDED IN TEXAS FOR THREE YEARS IN ELIGIBLE FOR IN-STATE TUITION ACCORDING TO
Federal Law Title 8, Chapter 14, Sec. 1623 .
How can this be any clearer unless you’re trying to use one Federal law against another Federal law?
In that case, seems one Federal Law is as good as the other, depending upon what you want to base your argument. Take it to the Supreme Court.
Federal Law Title 8, Chapter 14, Sec. 1623

You are correct on the Dream Act.
“But immigration reform has stalled. Congress has repeatedly failed to pass the Dream Act, a proposal that would put the students on a path to citizenship.
Critics question how much tuition discounts and state financial aid cost the state, especially during tough economic times. A lawsuit has been filed challenging the law.
Even so, Gov. Rick Perry supports the law aiding illegal immigrant students. In a recent debate, he said the students are on the path to citizenship. However, they actually won’t be on that path unless the Dream Act passes.”

(a) The status of an alien who was inspected and admitted or paroled into the United States 1/ or the status of any other alien having an approved petition for classification as a VAWA self-petitioner 1aa/ may be adjusted by the Attorney General, in his discretion and under such regulations as he may prescribe, to that of an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence if

avagreen: that's what I've been trying to say...
kaheo Sunday, October 30th at 4:48PM EST (link)You hit the nail right on the head with your last post in the first para. That is what I was trying to explain to gekster but gekster seemed to imply that the DREAM Act was not necessary for these kids to be able to convert to legal status and therefore start work and living a normal life in the US. I must’ve misunderstood that you agreed with gekster that the DREAM Act or similar legislation is not needed for these kids to be able to change to legal status. I’m sorry, we’re in sync now on this issue.
I have not once indicated/implied that its Perry’s fault that the DREAM Act at the National Level did not pass. I have only accused him of being hypocritical (& heartless) on the issue by the stand he has chosen to take. He is the Gov of Texas and thus has no influence in the US Senate. He is however running for POTUS and its important we understand where he stands on this issue. He has publicly stated that he is against the DREAM Act. Do you see the contradiction and or hypocrisy of Perry’s stand on this issue? He felt sorry for these kids as Gov re-tuition, but as President he would not support the DREAM Act?
No, we don't agree at all, kaheo. YOu need to read both bills.
avagreen Sunday, October 30th at 8:45PM EST (link)It’s important to point out that there is a huge difference in the Texas Dream Act and the The Dream Act that was pushed in Congress and failed. The Dream Act in Congress was full of all kinds of goodies other than allowing children of illegals to receive in state tuition. The Texas Dream Act was focused only on that. I happen to agree with The Texas Dream Act, and so did everyone in the Senate in Texas. It passed with ZERO “no” votes. Add to that, it has been proven to be successful.
These kids did not choose to come here. But they have been raised here. They do not know Mexico as their country. They know America as their country. Perry’s only interested in the kids already here being able to get an education, not all the other Goodies that the FEDERAL DREAM acts creates, although Texas does need a PORTION (a portion)(a portion) of the Dream Act to put the TEXAS DREAM ACT (as it’s called) into action.
Not the whole enchalada.
Off-subject a big:
Further, Perry wants to close the border
He’s always said that border control MUST be dealt with first. The problem with all other efforts on this issue in the past is that the borders were not sealed. If there is anyone who we can trust to do that it is Gov. Perry.
He knows what goes on down at the border.

kaheo Sunday, October 30th at 11:12PM EST (link)There’s no need for you to shy away from that avagreen. I just like you support the Texas DREAM Act, 100%. I believe I have stated that before. And as I have repeatedly stated I understand the huge difference between it and the Federal DREAM Act. The Texas one was to allow these kids to pay in-state tuition, the Federal one was to allow them to convert to legal status. You claim it had extra goodies that made it unpalatable to you and others who opposed it. Fair enough. I too would opposed anything that was added onto the bill that was unnecessary.
Now you say that you are against the Federal DREAM Act in the content it was framed, but if I understood you correctly is that if it only allowed these kids who were brought here out of no fault of their own, you’d be supportive of that alone, without the extra goodies that you referred to. Gekster believes that allowing these kids to convert to permanent residency is equal to amnesty and he is opposed to it.
Maybe this would narrow it down – Are you in favor of supporting any legislation (not the DREAM Act) brought before the Senate/House that would allow these kids to convert to legal status and only that alone without the extra goodies as stashed into the DREAM Act?

as for the “narrative” consider the following…
all of the other candidates have had numerous free passes from the media when it comes to various mistakes they’ve made.
I’ve heard no one (outside of RS) mention that Michelle Bachmann voted for a similar bill in the MN legislature about in-state tuition for illegals.
No one (outside of RS) has mentioned that Romney was “the conservative” four years ago and now he is “the moderate conservative”
No one outside of RS has mentioned that Massachusetts has looser immigration enforcement than texas.
No one has mentioned that Cain did a poor job of defending the 999 plan in the last debate (apples and oranges…go to my website… the questions weren’t that hard!)
No one else had a hit piece on them about a stupid rock from 30 years ago.
Perry would have been crucified by the media if he was the one who made Cain’s comment about the electric fence — but the story is barely mentioned.
Not to mention the constant “He’s a squish on immigration…he wanted to strap down 12 year old girls and give them a vaccine.” even though both issues aren’t true and have been adequately explained and dealt with.
maybe you can start to see why people feel the way they do.

Heck, RedState ran negative pieces on Cain for about 5 days in a row last week. Go back and look. Then, you have the Karl Roves and Brit Humes on Fox News talking down about his candidacy. But, I’m not whining about it. He needs to be vetted and needs to be prepared to respond to criticism. It’s a part of the process.

The point is...
renl57 Friday, October 28th at 5:18PM EST (link)…that Cain has undergone sharp criticism. And not just by Democrats either. (Karl Rove is not a Democrat, last I checked.)
The reason why Cain has managed to fend off such criticism (so far) is that he has something that neither Perry nor Romney have shown: The ability to connect with potential supporters on a deep personal level. Cain doesn’t have to work so hard to sell Americans on his ideas, because he’s able to sell Americans on himself.
Perry *could* have done that too, if he didn’t keep acting like he’s still running for some office in Texas rather than President of the fifty states.

acat (Diary) Friday, October 28th at 5:49PM EST (link)Perry has also been criticized by Rove. He didn’t whine about it.
Perry was attacked before Cain emerged into the top three. I don’t think he expected the scope of the pile-on and has been recalibrating – his incremental improvements in the debates as well as his going for Romney’s rhetorical throat at the CNN debate indicate, to me, that Perry’s learning.
Cain doesn’t seem to know how to respond to Rove, though .. and unlike Perry, Cain’s working without a $afety net.

Are people aware how this will be portrayed?
westbrook348 Friday, October 28th at 4:02PM EST (link)Perry’s flat tax is going to be called a huge tax cut for the wealthy. I know it’s so much more than that, it’s pro-growth and pro-jobs, but during the general election, the only thing we’ll hear about it is that it cuts taxes dramatically on the the richest 1%. Obama will fall all over himself with the class warfare. And polls do show that the uinformed, brainwashed masses do hate the Bush tax cuts and want taxes on the wealthy to go up not down (at least, they think they do). Just be prepared for the media narrative.
How will others plans be portrayed
bzip Friday, October 28th at 4:08PM EST (link)Of course you can look at the other plan that is getting lots of attention, the 999 plan. Having the option in to stay with the old tax system I think throws out many arguments from the lib’s.
The 999 plan will raise taxes on 84% of Americans and will create a new national sales tax that will morph into a VAT. The liberals will just love and attack the middle and poor getting a tax increase. The conservative base is confusing the heck out of me with going along with increasing taxes and creating a new stream of revenue (sure goes against conservative principles).
At least Perry’s plan adheres to conservative principles doesn’t raise taxes and the liberal base can’t complain since it is a optional flat tax.
I support Governor Rick Perry. Join the Tea and Fed Up Blog.
Follow @WilliamKronert
doesn't matter
westbrook348 Friday, October 28th at 4:32PM EST (link)the media will demonize ALL the conservative plans as either raising taxes on the poor or lowering taxes on the wealthy, and give Obama a pass.
I’m not sure the country is ready for a plan that contains such a major tax cut for the wealthy. We sure need it, but the people will fight it on principle. They think the rich already have it too easy, and aren’t paying their fair share. It’s wrong, but it’s what they think.
If you want to lower rates by as much as Perry’s proposing, you really have to make some gestures to broaden the base and reduce or eliminate the loopholes and deductions. Tax capital gains and dividends as ordinary income. Stop differentiating between different kinds of income. Then maybe you can lower the rates and people will accept it.
Educate people about Obama’s lies: repeat over and over again that Buffett doesn’t pay less than his secretary, because he pays 35% corporate tax.
westbrook, you can't fix stupid.
acat (Diary) Friday, October 28th at 4:52PM EST (link)Unfortunately, too much of the electorate have been kept deliberately stuck on stupid by the Dems and other statists.
As for “tax cut for the wealthy”, it really depends on what definition of wealthy is in use. Do you mean to use the Dems’ “anyone making more than average” definition, or a more accurate “the top 5% of the country” definition?
The only group who seem to take a hit are those whose adjusted gross is below $69k and who have no dependents. This would be working-poor empty-nesters and childless.
In both cases, converting to the Perry plan is optional, they can stay with the lower-exemption lower-rate for the time being, in the case of the empty-nesters, perhaps until they retire. In the case of the working-poor childless, there’s really not a good solution, but .. if they’re young, the first kid or the next pay raise may solve it.
Finally, this is all just talking points today. Nothing’s in Congress, nobody knows what the final result will look like. Perry’s plan has much going for it, even if it just cuts government revenue and forces the idiots in congress (both parties) to finally stop their drunken spending binge.
Mew

Caveat Suffragator
yeah because it's optional, NO ONE takes a "hit"
westbrook348 Friday, October 28th at 10:03PM EST (link)that’s the point. The few billionaires who ARE getting away with paying low tax rates can continue to do so, while the rest of the upper class that now pays much more than 20% all get a huge tax cut.
I just don’t know how you sell that to a country that still thinks we need to let the Bush tax cuts expire for cryin out loud.
Your final point was spot on until you said that revenue cuts would force congress to stop spending. Lack of revenue hasn’t stopped the politicians from spending for decades now. Deficit spending is here to stay, until the house of cards crashes, because the alternatives are politically unfeasible. Restricting revenue before restricting spending doesn’t starve the beast, it just balloons the deficit.
Btw, did you know Ron Paul proposes we cut $1 trillion in spending next year? ::ducks head::
I'd bother to respond to the Ron Paul point if..
acat (Diary) Saturday, October 29th at 4:01AM EST (link)he had ever shown ability to herd congresscritters before or if he had a better shot at winning the nomination than an ice cube in Mobile in August has of not melting.
The first part of my answer to your other question is to ask just how many billionaires you think there are. I’ll skip the class warfare rhetoric, thanks.
The majority of the living, dying, and tax-paying in this country is, just as it was in George Bailey’s Bedford Falls, is done by the average Joe, and for anyone currently making between $69k and $500k adjusted gross, the Perry plan is either a lateral tax burden move to a simpler tax preparation, or an actual savings.
The assumption in the Perry plan, as in Reagan’s voodoo economics, is that most job creation is still by small business owners who can move faster to take advantage than large corporations, and that lowering the taxes for the owners of those same small businesses and their better customers will increase the number of jobs available.
You sell the Perry plan by pointing out a ballpark percentage of Americans who it helps. “It’s the economy, stupid!” still applies.

demonizing
bobguzzardi Saturday, October 29th at 5:50AM EST (link)Rick Perry is focusing on job creation with energy production and simplifying the tax code. The plan changes direction of the tax code and its complexity and yet it is not so radical that it can’t pass Congress. Just right. Goldilocks plan. Not the status quo; not utopian fantasy; just right. This is what a real world governor brings to the office.
Who will switch to the new system?
renl57 Friday, October 28th at 5:26PM EST (link)Those who currently pay no tax (which is now nearly half of Americans!) will stick with the current system.
Those politically well-connected corporations like G.E. which get generous tax breaks under the current system will stick with the current system.
That undercuts the whole purpose of tax reform, which is to lower the rates while broadening the base.
The only people I can see switching to the new system are those who don’t have any tax breaks they can take advantage of: They don’t use energy credits and they don’t own investment property and so on. Single proprietorships will likely switch to the new system.
But large corporations that get tax breaks now (G.E., Boeing, A.D.M., etc.) will all stick with the current system.
If Perry’s plan gets adopted and G.E. continues to pay zero tax because the Democrats love them, what good is the plan anyway?
Switch or fight?

He still has many of the same core people.
I would have to have them look at it.
But they would want to continue the old way
because if I did it then they would not make any money.
You see where this is going???
Now when I am retired? Yeah with no kids around and no income
coming in – then I can pay a flat tax on 0…..
The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.
Not everyone has a 'purpose of tax reform'

Perry's newest ad
retire05 Friday, October 28th at 4:05PM EST (link)This is the Perry I know. In the military, Perry’s attitude toward this nation would be called “gung ho.” For years, Governor Perry has been telling us Texans it could get better. And it has.
And if someone wants to come on this site and tell me that Texas is not kicking some serious booty when it comes to job creation, keeping the cost of living down, keeping state government out of your business and allowing you to prosper, add what wonderful state you live in so I can compare them.
retire05
Texas is kicking major butt!
tyman Friday, October 28th at 4:13PM EST (link)I’m in Georgia, but I have an uncle who lives in Dallas.
He said they weren’t experiencing the mortgage meltdown we experienced here. He said that he saw development and construction still going strong.
I guess they needed new houses and office space for all the people that were going to live and work there.
That’s the America I know! Not this “new normal” mess.
tyman,
retire05 Friday, October 28th at 4:23PM EST (link)Texas is not exactly booming, but if you read Thomas Sowell’s book, Housing Boom and Bust, you will understand why Texas did not see the housing bust other places did. It all goes back to over reach by local/state governments.
Yeah, there were a couple of areas in Houston and Dallas that saw housing values decrease, but they are now back up to where they were. And when you have 1,000 people moving to a state every week, they need houses.
Also, Texas laws don’t allow you to borrow more than 80% of the value of your home if you refinance, which a lot of people did to get a lower interest rate.
retire05
Major ditto, retire05. It is the Perry that I know, and,
pttx333 (Diary) Friday, October 28th at 4:29PM EST (link)hopefully, it will be the Perry that the whole world knows next year! I might add that Anita Perry is also a fantastic candidate for FLOTUS, as everyone will learn as time goes by. They are a winning couple who will return civility and decorum to the White House that is sorely lacking in today’s world.
The MSM, lefties, trial lawyers, b.o.’s folks, the establishment, et al., have worked overtime to excoriate Perry, and it is hard for me to understand how a lot of the voters cannot seem to grasp the trashing for exactly what it is – trash. I will be standing with Perry for the duration without a doubt in my mind and with no wavering.

pttx and Scope,
retire05 Friday, October 28th at 6:20PM EST (link)thanks for the compliments. I try to be honest in my debating of not just the candidates, but the issues as well. But some are just not willing to have an open mind.
pttx, yes, Anita Perry is a fine lady. People who work for the State of Texas absolutely loved Laura Bush. Mrs. Bush seemed to have the ability to remember their names, ask about their kids remembering little details she was told about them and never seemed in a grumpy or bad mood. Anita Perry had large shoes to fill when she became the First Lady of Texas. But fill them she did, and much in the same quiet, reserved way that Laura Bush did.
Anita Perry would never tell a crowd of people that it would be “stupid” not to vote for her husband, as Ann Romney did.
One thing that would be different with an Anita Perry as First Lady is a respect for those who work so hard. She knows what it is like to grow up on a hard scrabble farm like Rick did, and she knows that every dollar earned is hard earned by most Americans. I doubt you would see her loading up her entire extended family on AF1 for a trip to Africa.
One of the things I like about Rick is his connection to everyday people. After he served his seven years in the Air Force, he went home to farm. But politics runs deep in us Texans, and he felt the call. Even as a Democrat, we Texans were better for having Rick Perry (called a “pit bull” due to his fierce opposition to state spending and hanging out in the “pit” of the Texas House trying to get other Democrats to vote against wasteful spending) .
Have I agreed with Rick Perry on everything? My, my, no. But he can admit when he made a mistake, and he listens to the will of the citizens he governs. And he truely believes that we must be a nation of equal opportunity, not equal outcome.
retire05
retire05, I can truthfully say that there isn't one thing you wrote
pttx333 (Diary) Friday, October 28th at 11:37PM EST (link)that I don’t rubber stamp, in spades. I grew up much the same way, though not on a farm, and understand very well the common man and the way the old Texas Democrats used to be. I come from a long line of them and am so very proud of that fact. You couldn’t give me the lifestyle of an elitist, and I’m certain they wouldn’t like me very much either!
Don’t you see just how much I’m bothered with that? HA
Yes, Anita Perry has done us proud. The few minutes I visited with her a few years ago at a small-town courthouse rally made a lasting impression on me – what a true lady she is!

Massachusetts_Transplant Friday, October 28th at 5:00PM EST (link)Am I missing something, is Aaron Gardner, the Rick Perry for President campaign manager? Do all the other candidates get front page placement of their ads with gushing praise for how great the ad and the candidate are?
These days there are two front page posts on RedState. The first is like this one – hoping that the 30th time someone writes about how great Rick Perry is and how he is making a comeback, that this time it will in fact become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Of course since Perry doesn’t have to think on his feet and say anything unscripted I am sure the ad is great.
The other post of course is to trash Mitt Romney – usually by picking up on something written somewhere else that tries and convicts him for the actions of some previous mid-level staffer that might have briefed Romney once or twice in their life. I am waiting for someone to dig into ex-Perry staffers, or more importantly into the charges of crony capitalism via the Texas Emerging Technology Fund – basically the “Solyndra funding” enterprise of Texas. I won’t hold my breath.

Scope (Diary) Friday, October 28th at 7:33PM EST (link)this kind of over the top post would have earned the hammer. To call Aaron Perry’s campaign manager? There is no truth to that charge, there is no validity to that charge. This is a sensationalist post, hyped by an out of control emotional breakdown because Aaron isn’t jumping on Romney’s bandwagon. I’ve seen others earn the hammer for far less, and recently, and for posting untruths.
You are woefully uninformed.
sunshinek67 (Diary) Friday, October 28th at 5:48PM EST (link)You cannot expect to make references to Perry’s articulation of the issues, ‘unscripted’. Your rants do not reconcile with Perry supporters that have heard and seen first hand how great Governor Perry is on the stump. Did you ever see the videos submitted by redstate poster Moe Lane from youtube? Gov Rick Perry (R-TX) Part I and Part II. You lost credibility without proof.
I will say as a Perry supporter he will have to polish his debate skills, as the general consensus is a major prerequisite for Presidency. Not an Obama supporter, but I have heard mixed reviews on his own debate skills, and his heavy reliance on teleprompters. I do not hold this against him, or any candidate for that matter.
But for Governor Perry, he wins hands down in the townhalls, meet and greets and coffee shops. He is very personable and quick on his feet.

People want a leader with an optimistic view of America
moconz Friday, October 28th at 6:00PM EST (link)People are tired of our leaders blaming our problems on businesses and the citizens. They want a leader that has an optimistic view of America, it’s businesses, and it’s people. That’s why Cain is doing so well, despite the rather obvious flaws in his 9-9-9 plan. This is Perry’s ticket back to the top… he’s gotta show he’s that kind of leader.

onemovoter (Diary) Friday, October 28th at 7:07PM EST (link)Of the 3 candidates, Cain, Romney and Perry.
Cain is now getting more and more dirt and “issues” brought up about him which is to be expected. The biggest one negative is “is he being taken serious enough to actually translate popularity to actual votes? WP asked a group of Ohioans their impression of him which was mostly positive but needed more details, and second was do you think he could be president of the US? NO ONE said yes.
Romney is having stories of 2 things, is he inevitable and can people trust him enough to vote for him? Romney keeps doing things that make people say no.
Perry has had a mix of both very good news stories about his energy and tax plans, with stories on the negative side of birthers, tax cuts for the rich, and “a bully”. However it looks like Perry is being smart in where and how he’s campaigning, and expect to see poll numbers start to move some.

It reminds me very much of the polls on Obama. Even though his poll numbers rating the job he has done are down, he has held steady in the likeability column. Yup, you can like a person very much, but, it doesn’t equate to wanting them to lead this nation.

Ignorance of the Public & Pundits
citizenkh (Diary) Friday, October 28th at 7:57PM EST (link)I was shocked that no commenter on any thread that I read and no pundit anywhere grasped the importance of Perry Phase 1 Plan “Energy and Jobs.”
Here is what it portends, and I will set up what is actually going on right not.
1. Engineering firms in Houston (Petrochemical Center of the World) are right now, and have been for several months, backlogged with initial design of new manufacturing plants.
2. Many of these proposed plants are for states like Ohio , Pennsylvania and West Virginia
3. These new construction projects will provide permanent blue collar jobs in the $75K to $100K annual gross wages even if non-union.
4. All that is needed to give the industry some sign of stability of raw material supply would be Perry’s election AND his promised Executive Orders.
Presently NO methanol is manufactured in the U.S. and has not been since 2003 when Methanex permanently shutdown its plant in Westwego, LA. The last standing idle methanol plant was demolished this year.
50% of ammonia (used to make fertilizer) is now imported from overseas.
Now take a gander at this white paper.

Perry has created his own "narrative"
boonerdan (Diary) Friday, October 28th at 8:40PM EST (link)“The only question is whether the voters are willing to give this optimistic vision a chance and listen to the message rather than focus on the media narrative that is being pushed about Gov. Perry.”
Sorry, but the “narratives” about Perry are those he has created himself. When a Governor does things in their state, that is none of my business if I don’t live in that state. BUT, when that Governor decides he/she wants to be PRESIDENT, then it becomes my business.
Narrative #1: “Perry is soft on the border.” Again, if Texans want grant state tuition to ILLEGAL INVADERs, it;s there money and their schools. This is a hot button issue for me for the whomever wants to reside at Pennsylvania Ave and will dictate immigration policy going forward.
Narrative #2: “Executive mandating vaccines.” I thought Perry was running as a Tea Party conservative?? Doesn’t seem to wash when an Executive DICTATES how people care for their children.
Narrative #3: “Perry just doesn’t like debates.” Memo to Gov. Perry: The President of the United States must occasionally speak in front of people. Did he think he would be able to hide in the WH and simply issue dictates (see Narrative #2)?
While I would gladly vote for Perry over McRomney, I think Perry has already spoiled his chance at “first impressions” with a large percentage of voters.
boonerdan,
retire05 Friday, October 28th at 9:15PM EST (link)Narrative #1; you confuse educating the kids of illegals (77% who are currently consider U.S. citizens by birth) with border security. I guess you have been hiding out in a cave, or you would know that Rick Perry believes that education is the purview of the states. He wants the federal goverment to get out of the education business and leave the states to do what is best for them. Now, I am sure you would rather have those kids recruited by the drug cartels to act as mules bringing drugs into our nation (as reported by the San Antonio Examiner).
So what makes you think that a man who thinks education should be left up to the states would force other states to accept Texas policy? (actually, 12 other states DO give in-state tuition to the children of illegals)
Narrative #2: Well, in spite of the fact that Perry said he should have left that up to the legislature, I don’t think I have read anything by you complaining that Michele Bachmann did nothing (also generally transmitted s*xually), as a state representative, to stop the madate for the Hepititus B vaccination, or as a Congresswoman, never complained when the Washington, D.C. city council voted to make Gardasil a requirement without an “opt-out” ability for parents. That mandate had to be approved by the Congress, and was, in a resolution. Funny how that kind of stuff comes back to bite people, isn’t it?
Narrative #3: Please, list all the debates Obama has been in since January 20, 2009. At least Perry can speak without a teleprompter, or three.

first and lasting impressions
dirlie Friday, October 28th at 10:31PM EST (link)I agree with boonerdan, and I don’t think Perry can overcome his first impressions with me at this time. I too wanted a true conservative running against Rombot McObama Junior. But then Perry spoke and this is what I heard:
1. If you don’t agree with me and our Texas view that we should continue to reward illegal immigrants then you have no heart and by implication, you are a racist. He apologized but I think we heard his real thoughts on this. I am for the rule of law, I am not racist, and I think the only solution to illegal immigration involves not leaving any advantages for people to immigrate illegally. I think it is heartless to support the current system in any respect, look at the crime, gangs, sex trade and human trafficking. Cut off the spigots we are drowning here.
2. His first thoughts on the Gardasil issue was a big government, elite, let’s use the specter of public health to mandate people get immunized solution. This is a real liberal fascist thought line and just the idea should scare any real conservative. I have no thoughts on the safety of the immunization, I just think if you start going down this road where does it end? I have the same issue with Romney mandating his healthcare even on his own state’s level.
3. He is not good at debates. Okay. Not the biggest thing in the world but all you Perry supporters whistling past the graveyard need to rethink your debates do not matter meme. I will grant you that at least he struck out at Romney, but it was such a childish exchange, and I don’t think immigration is an issue he needs to even bring up. He really needs to improve, but I have yet to see it.
4. Bottom line, this guy won several elections….in Texas, a pretty red state. I think the national game is completely different. He is constantly making totally rookie mistakes. The birther issue is so over but he fell for it like a sucker fish. The media will bait him again and he will probably fall again. Don’t kid yourself, the media wants the weak willed Romney as our nominee. It takes Obamacare off the table and takes most real conservatives out of the game. I really had hopes for Rick Perry, disappointing is the word that comes to mind but distraught may soon follow if we nominate another liberal RHINO like Romney for the lack of a better candidate.
5. Full disclosure, at this point I am leaning heavily toward Cain and although I have criticized others for saying they would not vote for Romney, the thought that I might vote for Romney is causing me to heave and I might just not do it. He is not a real conservative, he is a big spending government solution liberal and he may be the worst thing that could ever happen to the Republican party and conservatism for years to come. Worst than Obama. I know I disappoint and anger some here, but this is what I believe.
dirlie, I suspect you heard what you wanted to hear
retire05 Friday, October 28th at 11:48PM EST (link)#1, Texas is NOT rewarding illegals. What Texas, and 12 other states are doing, is making the bet that the children of illegals who attend a university will not turn to crime. Instead, they will be able to get jobs that not only pay well, but contribute to the tax base. These are children we are talking about, and if we apply your standard to your children, then if you break the law, your kids should be held liable for what you have done. You want to dump the crime, drugs and sex trade completely on illegals. Have you taken a good look at Detroit, Chicago and St. Louis lately? It’s not illegals ruining those cities. Oh, and please, don’t tell me these kids cannot legally work in the U.S. once they graduate from a university. If that is what you think, you should Google ITIN.
#2. Had you bothered to do diligent research, you would know that by mandating the vaccine, which also gave parents the right to opt-out by simply accessing the form online, the insurance companies would have been required to cover the almost $400 cost of the three shot series. The Perry EO would have put the onus on insurance companies, unlike Sarah Palin’s Alaska, which currently offers the vaccine to ALL Alaskan girls FREE, and paid for by every tax payer in the U.S. through a Department of Health and Human Services grant. So you are paying for the Gardasil vaccinations of girls in Alaska. How does that sit with you?
You would also know that a number of states did the same thing; make the vaccine mandatory. All but California, and D.C. have overturned that mandate but still actively promote the vaccine.
#3. No, Perry is not good at debates. He admits it. So what? Is that what you are looking for? Someone who can give catchy 60 second answers to complex questions? If you want to vote for an American Idol kinda guy, don’t go with Perry. Perry was right to go after Romney. Romney is a hypocrite of the worst sort. He is doing to Perry over in-state tuition EXACTLY what he did to Huckabee and Guiliani, and in the end, HE LOST. But hey, go with the guy that can sell you a used car in 60 seconds.
#4. Texas may be a red state, but only because, as a rule, Texas Democrats are more conservative than Northeastern Republicans. Independence is not just a catch phrase in Texas, it’s a way of life. The media is baiting Perry because they are afraid he will win. He is the antithesis to everything the liberal media stands for. There is an old saying “The left will always tell you who they fear.” So a snarky remark made by Perry about Obama’s B.C. was turned into a hit piece by a number of left wingers, and some conservatives who don’t understand that Perry understands, nothing is ever going to be done about Obama’s BC.
#5. You say you are for Cain. Perhaps you will explain to me (since no one else that supports him can) what there is in his history that tells you how he will govern. Also, do you think Cain is making no mistakes with his off-centered comments? Come on, Cain is a walking gaffe machine. He has single handedly destroy any chance of gaining any Hispanic votes, with some Hispanic Republican groups calling for him to drop out of the race. You don’t insult one ethnic group and win elections.
Vote for whomever you want. That is your choice as a free American. But I would suggest you inform yourself a little better than you seem to be now.

She is struggling, trying to hold on thinking if she wins Iowa (Romney will take New Hampshire) she is still in the game. I don’t think she will win Iowa, although I am not sure who will. Cain may be in the lead, and some polls (CBS) says Romney is leading there, but the CBS poll of Oct. 2007 also showed Romney in the lead in Iowa with 29%, only for Huckabee to come from 12% to win.

Bachmann needs to take a page from Pawlenty and get off the stage.
acat (Diary) Saturday, October 29th at 10:13AM EST (link)The longer she stays in without a wing nor a prayer – having blown herself up via the vaccination=retardation nonsense – the lower my respect for her falls.
At this point, I’m not sure she could take Klobuchar, who desperately needs a primary challenge.

Bachmann - is melting down quickly
bzip Saturday, October 29th at 10:39AM EST (link)Yep, I am really disappointed in Bachmann. She is really making herself look foolish and so non-presidential. I had high opinion of her when she first entered the race but she has lost me big time.
She wants to keep going after Perry, I don’t understand this.
Why isn’t she spending her time going after Romney and for that matter whey isn’t Cain going after Romney.
Say good night to Bachmann – soon I hope.

Bachmann is
1bunny Saturday, October 29th at 1:25PM EST (link)hanging in so she can sell her book that is coming out in November. And attacking Perry is sour grapes on her part as he announced the day she won (paid enough people) the Iowa staw poll.
1bunny- Bachmann is saying that Perry
Scope (Diary) Saturday, October 29th at 3:27PM EST (link)was behind the Tea Party calling for her to quit the race. According to the linked article at the anti-Perry site the National Journal, she said that “they heard that Perry was behind the call for her to quit.” Then she takes another cheap shot and says that if Perry has anything to say to her, he can go on the debates and say it to her.
Bachmann took her cheap shots at Perry about Gardasil, and proceeded to fall right down in the polls. Obviously she hasn’t learned that making false allegations against any candidate will only do her in even more, and sooner. This screeching cockatoo has got to go.

txpat Saturday, October 29th at 2:48PM EST (link)Probably hope for a Romney bail out like T-Paw got.
Green backs will top core beliefs.
Which could explain why as so called conservatives they turn a blind eye to Romney’s liberal leaning ways, don’t call him on it.
At least Santorum is vocal about Romney’s issues.
She took my tax plan 1st

It doesn’t hold water.
This is why she needs to go away.

joayn, good morning, about Perry and the fence
retire05 Saturday, October 29th at 9:55AM EST (link)what most people don’t know, is how similar Perry’s proposal is to Santorum’s actual bill. (S. 3564 109th Congress)
That bill proposes fences only in major population areas, and in areas where there is additional surveillance resources. It also calls for multiple sources of boots on the ground, including former military and former police, authorized to monitor the border. Betcha didn’t hear Santorum mention that bill, did you? That is because he didn’t mention it. It is too much like Perry’s border security policy.
My philosophy still stands; you will be told, in indirect ways, who not only the press fear, but who the other candidates fear. Romney has an entire website devoted to bashing Perry. Cain will allow his minions to do the same, via emails and/or ads. Cain may be hauling in the money now, but it will not be enough and maybe he thinks he can reproduce Obama’s ground troops movement to make up for the lack of funding. I don’t think he can.
retire05
I've read the same thing about Santorum and
joayn (Diary) Saturday, October 29th at 2:11PM EST (link)Perry’s secure-the-border plan, retire05.
Something that I find very interesting is ever since Perry’s staff mentioned a more selective approach towards debates, now everybody’s talking about it. Meaning, first the criticism then the actual acknowledgement of, yeah, that’s a lot of debates.
Even non-Perry fan Byron York is in agreement (he first had to slam Perry a little bit at the beginning of the article, but what else is new). He actualy does a pretty good job listing some of the debates and their significance to any new information regarding the positions of the candidates.
The foreign policy debate, yes that’s important. A debate on economics, maybe (only because some of this has already been covered), and more debates scheduled with no real value.
Regardless of who you support for President, I think you would agree that fewer debates with more substance would be ideal. Plus with the primaries changing, the campaigning time has been cut down a month. this only helps one person: Mitt Romney.
The only people that these debates help are the last tier candidates. In previous campaign seasons a lot of these folks would be dropping out, leaving the top three or four candidates to battle it out. A natural progression, if you will. With fewer debates, the out-of-sight-out-of-mind mentality kicks in and funds dry up. Plus, the news media are going to follow the top contenders, so people like Santorum and Huntsman wouldn’t get any valuable coverage, which would equal no money.
Anyway, I don’t blame Perry and his staff for floating this out there. I am sick and tired of all the slugfesting. It does absolutely no good for this important process. Romney enjoys it and encourages it, and wants as many of the current conservative candidates to stay in the debates to split the conservative vote. It’s the only way he can get the nomination.
I must add that even though I support Perry, I always held Herman Cain in high regard. Who isn’t impressed by him and the life he’s led? However, that ended the night that he chose Mitt Romney over any other conservative candidate on that stage to be his VP choice. His partiality to Romney is the biggest flaw in his character as far as I’m concerned. And I’m sorry to see so many people prefer to overlook that fact.

He has experience of being under the thumb, and this helps to imo.

dirlie Saturday, October 29th at 9:58AM EST (link)I am not even on their radar. The points I made are my own.
1. Spin it anyway you want giving illegals benefits is not my idea of the solution and telling me I have no heart probably reinforces my choice not to vote for you.,
2. Spin again, the whole gardusil decision and pushed through with an executive mandate even with the opt out is a horrible big lib elite choice. At least he got it eventually, but what does it say about Perry’s natural thought line, sounds like he still works for Gore to me.
3. He is a bad debater, it will matter, people that will not do any other research will hear his inane, poor performance and draw a conclusion that their is no reason to look further
4. We agree, the media is baiting Perry. Can he wise up in time? My magic eight ball says probably not.
5. I am leaning, leaning Cain, I have not decided. Cain is also making gaffes. I notice that his gaffes really expose him for being a conservative and the Liberal establishment really gets insane about his views. Perry’s gaffes have exposed him for thinking if you believe in stopping immigration you are heartless, that he is too dumb not to get baited on the birther issue and that he has a lack of focus. I will take a conservative gaffe machine over a big government liberal insult conservative gaffe machine any day.
dirlie, if you want to opinine, at least be informed on the subjects you opinine on
retire05 Saturday, October 29th at 10:16AM EST (link)#1, shall we not hold children responsible when their parents (ususally just a mother) are drug addicts living on our dime in public housing simply because of that child? Would you suggest that all those children be removed from their parents because of the crimes their parents commit? You better be willing to pay, via taxation, for the construction of thousands of orphanages. What about all the babies born hooked on crack? We are paying for their treatment and recovery, and the number of babies born on crack is now so large in some cities, that the mother’s are not even being prosecuted. Do you support not treating those babies, as well?
#2, what Gardasil (please learn to spell) says about Perry is that he was attempting to do the best for Texas parents, by requiring insurance companies to cover the cost, that he could since the legislature was not in session, and would not be for another two years. At least, unlike in Alaska, you would not be paying for it. If you tell me what state you live in, I can tell you what vaccinations are required there and if there are opt-outs, or if those shots are mandatory. I would bet you that you, as a parent, cannot opt-out of a tetanus shot for your kid, although that vaccine does not treat a disease that can be transmitted casually.
#3, I already admitted, as did Perry himself, that he is a bad debater. But if that is the measure by which Americans now pick a president, then it is no wonder we currently have what we have.
#4. I am trying to be respectful to your views, but if you continue to conflate in-state tuition with “stopping immigration”, I am going to have to take you to the woodshed. In-state tuition is NOT immigration, immigration is NOT illegal immigration. Please, inform yourself better because up to this point, it just reads like you are regurgitating talking points.

I am glad we are talking here
dirlie Saturday, October 29th at 10:55AM EST (link)1. I think it is clear at this point that I am a very small government conservative. I think we should reevaluate the government’s role in everything we do, line by line. That doesn’t in any way mean I believe children should pay for their parents crime. At the same time in relation to illegal immigration, you are either here legally or not, end of story. The government needs to stop all benefits to any one here illegally and enforce all existing laws. Every time someone pops up on the grid illegally and they can be deported they should be deported. Oh my God he thinks we should deport 12 million people, women and children included. No, I think if we start enforcing the laws we have and making an effort, including steep fines and jail for employers, you have a self deporting population who no longer has benefit for being here illegally.
2. Sorry, Gardasil…Gardasil, there added to dictionary. Once again the whole thought line on this decision was poor, even Perry realized that eventually. My problem is how he got their originally. How poorly thought out the whole debacle was. I have noticed a theme in you first 2 responses. You think the Government knows better and should tell me what to do. I think the Government has proven over and over they know nothing and basically everything they touch turns to crap even with the best of intentions.
3. Agreed, but many people watch American Idol and occasionally catch a snippet of news. When Perry’s snippets are so poor, and the media will ensure that, it has an adverse outcome. Perry has to overcome this.
4. Obviously my thought line on immigration is radically different than yours. I believe in comprehensive strict enforcement. I believe it is not in the interest of the nation to continue to allow illegal immigration. I believe individual states that make rules encouraging illegal immigration should be penalized. I believe sanctuary cities should have all Federal Funding cut off. I am trying to be respectful of your views but it really sounds to me that the common liberal “but they are just children, or do it for the children” justify anything thought line is what you believe.
dirlie, you're idealistic, but not realistic
retire05 Saturday, October 29th at 3:07PM EST (link)#1, yes, I agree that the federal governnment is too involved in our lives. The purpose of federalism was not to hinder what Americans could do, but to allow them to persue their dreams unhindered as long as they did not violate the laws of man.
As to the goverment stopping all benefits given to illegals, outside of the ruling in Plyler (which incorporated Texas vs. Certain Known and Unknown Illegal Aliens) I don’t know of any federal government benefit that is given to illegals. Perhaps you can list them for me. Even Medicare/Medicaid eligibility is determined on a state by state basis.
Now, the truth of the matter is that illegals can obtain work permits from the U.S. government. Janet Napolitano admitted in a Congressional hearing recently that illegals often do get work permits. It is called an “ITIN” and allows them to work here, and requires them to pay taxes. It is not a system that was designed by the current administration, but has been in effect for quite some time. Get this through your head: no one is going to deport 12-20 illegals, EVER. So deal with the reality of that. Your wishful thinking is not ever going to be policy.
#2 Do you have children? If so, did you innoculate they against measels (a communicable disease), or against lock jaw (the tetanus innoculation and not a communicable disease) or polio (again, not a communicable disease) and were those innoculations required in your state of Tennessee? Could you opt-out? How about Hepititus B?
If you research Gardasil on the CDC website, you will learn one thing: it has a lower percentage of side affects than the Hep B vaccination, which IS required in almost ALL states. And when the Salk vaccine was introduced, it had a high rate of side affects, including death in some that were innoculated, yet, we have almost totally wiped out polio in this nation because the vaccine became mandatory for all children.
Research HPV. Cervical cancer is not the only problem caused by HPV. Genital warts are a major problem and it is estimated that it is currently at epidemic proportions, with at least 50% of all college students suffering from genital warts for which there is no cure. That is why a recent CDC release is now recommending Gardasil vaccine for every young person, including males. Tell me, if we, as a nation, could virtually wipe out the disaster that is genital warts and one cause of cervical cancer within one generation, would you still be against the innoculation being mandatory just as the polio, Hep B, tetanus and measels vaccines are now?
#3 and your guy has to overcome the perception that he wants to fry illegals on an eletrified fence. So far, he is doing a lousy job at that.
#4 Let me ask you this: are you willing to dig ditches all day long for a living? How about cleaning toilets, changing bed sheets that are nasty, scrubbing offices every night after everyone has gone home, or doing any of the mundane, back breaking labor that I see illegals doing every day? Until you are willing to work for minimum wage scrubbing toilets, and you can find thousands of other people willing to do the same, the illegals will come. And they will take those jobs that you consider yourself above doing.
Yes, we should be enforcing our borders. But that is, and remains, the purview of the federal government and until the federal government really gets serious about border control, states will have to deal with the ramifications of lax enforcement the best way they know how. And if betting on the side of education to keep young adults out of jail or from becoming mules for the drug cartel is the position that the states take, why not? We have already spent over $100,000.00 educating those kids from K-12th grades.
Oh, and throwing out the canard “you must a liberal” doesn’t work on me and it is a tactic that is only used by those who have no real points to make.
You are an ideologue, not a realist. In order to change what is, you first have to accept what is, and work from the local ground to change that to what you want.

Take your complaints to the other 44 states wanting to do the same thing, including boys now.
Wrongo. It was more like $5,000, and I guess all the 44 other states did the same?
As of July 2011, legislators in at least 41 states and D.C. have introduced legislation to require, fund or educate the public about the HPV Vaccine and at least 20 states have enacted this legislation, including Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Washington. Source: National Conference of State Legislatures.
And, no there was no hanky-panky with Merck, either. Here is a source to view all of Perry’s contributions: ProPublica.
In fact, Merck has only contributed $23,500 to Perry over a 1998-2010 span, not exactly George Soros money. For comparison, from 2000-2006 Merck gave $2,460,000 to state politicians across 40 states.
5. Cain is knee-deep in “big government”…….he used to be a lobbyist. Can’t get much more “big government” than that. How do you think he got $$ from that job?
In fact, he “loves BIG GOVERNMENT”.

Ben Adler of The Nation;
“In the third quarter Perry raised the most money of any Republican candidate, an impressive $16.3 million in just forty-nine days. As he always has, Perry depended heavily on donations from executives in environmentally destructive industries such as oil, gas, chemicals and waste disposal. Perry’s top eight donor corporations include three energy companies: Murray Energy ($66,803) Clayton Williams Energy ($43,300) and Occidental Petroleum ($36,000). The corporate social responsibility group Action For Our Planet named named Occidental Petroleum the sixth-most-unethical company in the world in 2010.
“Meanwhile Perry’s allied Super Pac, received $100,000, more than half their total receipts, from Harold Simmons, a Texas investor. Simmons has donated generously to Perry in the past—he is Perry’s all-time second-largest donor—in exchange for Perry’s support for Simmons’s business interests.”

In contrast, Herman Cain has run his campaign carefully, almost frugally. No debt I see him running the country the same. HIs donations are coming in now mostly from the average grassroots supporters :
“UPDATE: Herman Cain’s campaign reported his fund-raising for October has reached $5 million.”

Five million for October ALONE!!! So who is he going to have to answer to? I’m thinking the grassroot voters, not cronies. Does he have some big money friends. I’m sure. But his majority of cash is coming from the average hard working joe/jane.
tngal, when you start quoting "The Nation" you are using the left for your arguments
retire05 Saturday, October 29th at 10:25AM EST (link)You are aware that The Nation is a far, FAR left wing publication, aren’t you?
And big whooptie do that Cain took in $5 million in a month. That is chump change compared to what Romney is hauling in, and Perry’s $17 million in the first 49 days. And how much of the $5 million has Cain already spent? According to the WaPo he only has slightly over $1 million left. That’s not going to buy much in the way of national advertising directed at folks who don’t watch the debates and independents who don’t attend rallies.
Now, since none of your fellow Cainiacs can answer my question, perhaps you would like to take a shot at it?
What is there in Herman Cain’s history that tells you how he will govern?
retire05
Well, if that don't beat all...
clintonformccain Saturday, October 29th at 10:25AM EST (link)Somebody quoting The Nation on RedState. Why not go all the way and post some excerpts from Chairman Mao’s Little Red Book?
yes, the nation , just like I quoted WSJ. I'm an aggregator.
tngal (Diary) Saturday, October 29th at 11:01AM EST (link)I see it as being well rounded.
Did you only read textbooks in college, or did you actually do some research in a library. Multiple sources. I have also quoted from Hot Air, WaPo, Examiner , Ny and LA Times, the Hill, Politico, Rolling Stone, Human Events, Town Hall, NatJournal and NatReview, Charlie Cook, Real Clear Politics and HIGHTIMES. To name but a tiny few.
I don’t sit in an echo chamber.
When picking candidates or a new brand of dental floss, I aggregate info from everywhere. On line and off.
Ummm, text books in college, tngal?
retire05 Saturday, October 29th at 11:09AM EST (link)Basically, if you went to your university library, you were doing research from other books written by those who felt they had the authority to write on that subject, usually other university professors. Generally, books written by those like Thomas Sowell are not on the research reading list.
But I am still waiting for you to answer my question:
what is there in Herman Cain’s history tells you how he will govern?
Or do you intend to continue to run from that question?
retire05
retire05, I'll let herman answer that
tngal (Diary) Saturday, October 29th at 12:12PM EST (link)You can tell how he’ll govern by where he stands on issues. That indicates where his policies will lean.
On: government spending:
“Though it might not be politically popular to modernize and eliminate some of our entitlement programs, responsible leaders should be willing to do it all the same. They must be prepared to make tough choices and learn to simply say “no.”
His hIstory of reducing spending
I have served as an executive of several major corporations. When times were tough and money was tight, I asked our employees to cut back drastically, and explained why it was necessary, and they did. We have all had to make difficult decisions in our own household or at our work place. Serious but responsible belt tightening can save businesses, and it can also save our country… .
If you are intersted in what Cain would do re: nat’l security:
“While diplomacy is a critical tool in solving the complex security issues we face, it must never compromise military might….”.
Does that give you a hint.
RE: Education
Cain goes with an unbundling education narartive
“..It means putting students before union interests, and it means keeping their development paramount. Unbundling education means localizing education- making those on the ground responsible for the teaching and learning that happens in our local communities. Unbundling education means offering parents choices for their children to create a truly competitive educational system.
Here’s another one on what role he believes government should play in pushing alternative energy.
“Alternative energy sources, such as wind, solar, nuclear and hydroelectric are certainly part of the solution long term, but private industry must take the lead for true innovation to be a bigger part of our future energy needs. If alternative energy sources are found to be inexpensive, safe and plentiful, then American consumers will choose to purchase them.
Again, are you able to see what this man believes in . That should give you a clue as to how he’ll govern.
With Cain, I see someone who is very economically adept, strong military, strong illegal immigration and border security, less control at the federal level level more control state and local, and a strong pusher of the free market system.
There are other issues too. You can find your answers as to where he stands. You should be able to grasp how he’ll govern . We’ve seen how Perry governs. Gardisal the girls. We’ve seen how Romney governs…Romneycare everybody must have it.
I don’t suspect you are but, if you were serious about learning something of the man, try here first:

One more point. I’ve heard folks say he wants to fix rather than abolish any governmental agencies. I have personally heard him twice now talk about “altering and abolishing” those agencies. He’s specifically mentioned the NEA and EPA.

Conservatiive principles of Cain questioned
bzip Saturday, October 29th at 12:44PM EST (link)Seems rather odd. Cain’s 999 plan will put into place a new national sales tax increasing taxes on 84% of the people. In addition Cain is adding in these “Opportunity Zones” which is a way of writing affirmative action into the tax code.
Clearly in Cain’s own words he supported TARP and isn’t interested in auditing then fed.
Could someone please tell me what happen the the smaller gov’t, the conservative principles that I thought we wanted so badly.

tngal- Which one of the issues
Scope (Diary) Saturday, October 29th at 12:42PM EST (link)that you’ve posted is Perry against? Has Cain ever had the opportunity to work with a Legislature, made up of D’s and R’s to get his initiatives passed? It’s very very different to be a CEO, and to direct people in what he wants them to do. If they don’t perform up to his expectations, he can just fire private sector employees. He can’t fire the Democrats and recalcitrant Republicans in Congress.
Perry, as a Governor, isn’t just talking about what he would like to accomplish in Congress, he’s already done it in Texas. We have a record to look at for Perry. We have words and promises from Cain.
So for Cain we have his issues page on his website.

tngal, I don't care what Herman Cain SAYS
retire05 Saturday, October 29th at 1:01PM EST (link)In all my years of being politically active, I care what a candidate has done. I care about his record, his history.
I didn’t fall for flowery, motivational speeches the last go-round, and I’m not going to fall for them now. I care about a candidate being able to do what he claims he can do, by showing me he/she has done it in the past. It’s called a “track record” and it is an important window into the candidate’s ability to achieve what they say they will.
Up until now, I have given you credit for presenting valid arguments in favor of your chosen candidate, but you just lost on two points:
#1 Telling me to go to Cain’s website doesn’t cut it. It simply means that you have no answer to my question (what is there in Herman Cain’s history that tells you how he will govern?) and are simply relying on campaign statements by Cain himself. That, dear tngal, is not defending your candidate. That is being a parrot for the candidate.
#2 Your “Gardisil the girls” comment. It shows that you either are uninformed about the issue as a whole, and have completely ignored the explainations of those who are not quoting Rick Perry, but giving you the facts AS TEXANS.
Not only have you not made the case for Cain, but you disappoint.

Ha Dan Benishek
Scope (Diary) Saturday, October 29th at 11:58AM EST (link)I loved Dan Benishek. I was one of the first ones here at RS to start singing his praises, and called and actually spoke with his wife about his candidacy early on. I was thrilled to see him win his election. Now, tell me tngal, how much have you heard from or about Dan Benishek since he went to Washington? Not much. I understand that the Tea Party people wanted to primary Benishek because he voted with the Republican leadership a few times, and they hated him for letting them down. Do you honestly believe for one tiny minute that if Cain got to the WH, that he is going to remain a non-politician, or not engaged in the political process the way the process has always worked? I’m all for not doing politics the usual way, with reaching across the aisle etc. but, do you really honestly think that anyone who wins the presidency can go to the Republicans in the House and Senate and just tell them that are are going to do things his way, and they are just magically going to vote on bills the way he tells them to? If you really believe that, then your rose colored glasses are more rosy than most.
Tbone- I'm going to go there with you
Scope (Diary) Saturday, October 29th at 11:44AM EST (link)on your “rightwing white guilt support.” I thought the white guilt thing was already tried in the 08 elections, and look where we are.
Going back to a Cain speech in NH, back in March, Cain told the people not to look at the first black president, and say to him that we can’t go there again, look at what Obama has done. He then asks them to look at those 43 white guys before him, and where has that gotten us. Those were not his exact words, but are very close to what he said and meant. Hmmm. So out of those 43 white guys, there was not one good president? Not even Reagan? He thinks he, with no political experience at all, can beat out Reagan as the president? WOW.
There is no question in my mind that at least some of his supporters have the attitude of “our black guy is better than your black guy.” They somehow believe that if the Republicans install the first black Republican in the WH that the leftists/liberals will somehow magically stop calling all of the Republicans/conservatives racists. There literally was a Cain supporter here that said they give the edge to Cain over Perry simply because of his skin color. That wasn’t just a sentiment floating around in his mind, it was typed right here on these pages. I’m sure many others share that belief, but wouldn’t own up to it in public.
The other thing you hear from a few Cain supporters is that he is the anti-government, anti-politician candidate, running at a time when everyone is against the status quo in Washington. Cain was a lobbyist. Cain ran for the Presidency, and he ran for a Senate seat. He lost both races by wide margins. So I guess you could say he isn’t a politician, despite the fact that he has wanted to be a politician, but could never succeed at getting elected. Had he run a successful campaign for the Senate, and won the election, he would now be a politician for a number of years. So Cain isn’t a politician, but not because he hasn’t wanted to be one. If he got to Washington, on inauguration day, Cain would become a politician. He could not work with 535 politicians without being one himself.
Also, in some comments note the reference to “anti-government”, not small or smaller government, but “anti-government..”
These are the people pushing him to the top!!!!!
True Scope, many of the pro-Cain posts reek of white guilt.

We need experience, not inexperience
bzip Saturday, October 29th at 10:35AM EST (link)Wrong, wrong and wrong!
What we need to to get this country out of its disaster that the likeable and inexperienced Obama put us in is: A person who elected experience, experience in working with the gov’t, experience and proven record at getting his state in order, creating jobs, reducing regulation.
What we don’t need is another likeable inexperienced person going into on the job training for another 4 years. A person who has already shown us that he (Cain) is for big gov’t – no to fed audit, TARP support, now in his new 999 plan wants a new national sales tax creating a new taxing revenue.
Cain = inexperience=Big Gov’t.
Perry=Proven True Conservative=small gov’t,=jobs=less regulation

Instate tuition
jrhode2873 (Diary) Saturday, October 29th at 4:38PM EST (link)Honestly, I don’t have a problem with Perry’s in-state tuition policy because the policy as a whole isn’t all that bad. But some people believe that its not fair for people who want to go to college in Texas but have to pay out of state tuition when the children of illegals get to pay in-state tuition. I respect that opinion.
As far as the ad, I haven’t seen it but I do understand why some people feel its a freebie to the children of illegals.

jrhode2873 (Diary) Saturday, October 29th at 4:54PM EST (link)Have you answered my question as to why you think Perry won’t go all “heartless” crap on conservatives if he gets elected? What makes you think he’s not going to do that again to us conservatives on some important issue. Perry is George W. Bush in Tea Party clothing.
jrhode, are you REALLY that uninformed?
retire05 Saturday, October 29th at 5:10PM EST (link)The “heartless” comment was made about what? In-state tuition for the children of illegals. Are you so uninformed that you really don’t know what Rick Perry has said about that, FOR THE LAST TEN YEARS?
But since you appear to be too lazy to inform yourself, I will tell you exactly what that would not apply nationally: it’s a state issue, just like it was for Oklahoma, Utah, Washington state, New Mexico, and California. You do know the difference between state issues and federal issues, don’t you?
I realize you and tngal are trying your level best to defend your chosen candidate, Herman Cain, but if you can’t even tell me what is in his history that tells you he will stick to his campaign promises, you are in deep water. People are no more going to accept “I think, I believe” than I am and you are showing yourself to be a terrible representative for Herman Cain.
And if you spent more time researching Rick Perry’s record as governor, compared to G. W. Bush’s record as governor, you would not be making stupid statements like you do.

"heartless comment"
jrhode2873 (Diary) Saturday, October 29th at 5:21PM EST (link)It was very revealing about Rick Perry as a politician. It opens up questions about how he really feels on issues where conservatives are accused of being heartless or lacking compassion. As a matter of fact, it sounds like a Democrat, truth be told.
I told you that Herman Cain gave over $1 million of his own money to Pro-Life causes. That gives you some indication as to how he will govern when it comes to social issues. What else do you want?
The man has laid out a supply-side, pro-growth economic plan that is crystal clear about his approach to economic issues. And he’s willing to stake his whole campaign on it. What else do you want?
If you don’t like Cain because he’s never held office then fine. But, please spare me this nonsense about not having any information on how Herman Cain would govern if elected. You have plenty of information available to you.
Cain - Is a liberal, jrhode
bzip Saturday, October 29th at 5:39PM EST (link)There is plenty of information on Cain and his plans for empowerment zones (can we say affirmative action) Cain and his new national sales tax in the 999 plan, Cain’s lies in regards to auditing the fed. Cain’s support of TARP.
Just how much are we suppose to accept from a unknow guy who has never governed.
Considering there is well over 10 years of experience and records for Perry I am sure will to accept that 0.1% that might have not been the greatest decision (though I could defend Perry if I wanted, others have done a better job) but the fact remains a 99.9% spotless record over a 10 year period and you want to defend a guy with NO record and is suggesting tax increases and much more.\

jrhode2873 (Diary) Saturday, October 29th at 5:55PM EST (link)I’m sorry you’re having a hard time understanding Cain’s 999 plan. Let me waste my time and try one more time to explain it to you. The sales tax is not a new revenue stream. It’s a replacement tax for other taxes that are being done away with like the payroll tax, capital gains taxes, and the death tax. It also broadens the tax base and makes it more difficult for people to avoid paying taxes and allows us to lower the rates on income taxes and business taxes. Is that too hard for you to understand? If it’s such a liberal plan, then why did the Club for Growth, Larry Kudlow, and Art Laffer speak favorably of it? What a collection of liberals those guys are.
Just to show you how objective I try to be about evaluating politicians, I don’t agree with Cain’s support of TARP or his support of Greenspan. But, that doesn’t mean I think he is a liberal any more than I think Perry is a liberal because he supports in-state tuition for illegals.

bzip Saturday, October 29th at 6:13PM EST (link)No matter how you slice it, Cain’s plan raises taxes and easily morphs into a VAT. Okay, may not the best plan. Fine, but considering Cain has no record, no governing experience and this is the heart and soul of Cain’s platform,,,,,don’t you think there is valid reason to be concern???
Yet, you seem to want to bash and bash a guy that has a spotless record (or at least 99.9% spotless filled with 10 year of conservative decisions in governing.

jrhode2873 (Diary) Saturday, October 29th at 6:20PM EST (link)I’m not bashing Rick Perry for his political views or his record. I’ve praised him over and over again for his record as governor of Texas. But, he has been an awful Presidential candidate, especially considering how much experience he has in comparison to Herman Cain. I’m not going to re-hash everything again about Perry, go read my previous posts about him if you forgot.
jrhode, correct me if I am wrong but
retire05 Saturday, October 29th at 5:58PM EST (link)didn’t Cain give a million bucks to try to reduce abortion in BLACK COMMUNITIES? Can I take from that (his record) that he is only concerned about abortions in black communities but not in Hispanic or White communities? After all, if I use your benchmark, then I can assume by his past actions that abortion in other communities is not important to Herman Cain and he would only concentrate on “social issues” that concern black people.. That is the same logic you are trying to foist on Rick Perry.
Now, perhaps you are in possession of a crystal ball, and you can look into the future thinking that all the pretty platitudes uttered by Herman Cain tells you how he would govern. Or you are just a fool.
Not only will I not vote for Herman Cain because his lack of a record, I will not vote for anyone who has not worn the uniform of this nation.

Herman Cain

Well, jrhode - Cain's and Principles
bzip Saturday, October 29th at 5:30PM EST (link)What makes you think Cain won’t be Liberal Romney?
Cain has already broken with conservative values as far as I am concern. You know, big gov’t with not wanting to audi the fed, supporting TARP, but most of all Cain’s 999 plan that creates a new national sales tax a new stream of revenue.
Just how conservative is that and from a guy that has no experience or a record to really look back at.
Amazing how some of the conservatives have just walk away from their own principles for the “likeable inexperienced” “R” version of Obama

bzip Saturday, October 29th at 5:50PM EST (link)I personally haven’t talk much about this racial nonsense but I can tell you that Cain could have made a hero out of himself if he had stood up to those left wing nuts and the attack on Perry.
Putting that aside, I can see just how wonderful this racial nonsense is going to go over. Its bad enough we get it from the left now we get it from the inside.
Look, Cain is a loveable likeable guy. A guy that does great at rhetoric but he has NO elected experience, NO record of how he will govern. I can’t help but feel and its supporters like you that make me feel that Cain is being supported becaise he is “likeable”.
Here we go again, the likeable inexperienced is what we hope to replace the current “likeable, inexperienced” person sitting in the white house now.
So far I have ask for substance and why we should suddenly accept Cain, accept that he will govern with conservative values and be the leader we need.
I haven’t see much. But I have seen proposals from Cain the 999 plan that clearly go against all conservative values. explain to me how and why we should accept a guy that is making proposals that increases taxes, starts a new national sales tax and adds more affirmative action into the tax code with his empowerment zones?
I seriously question Cain’s conservative values and his supporters. have you all walks away from the conservative base and is this now what we have become.

Also, I’ll note the a fair amount of you also decided to attack me for daring to post something positive about the candidate whom I prefer on the FP.

jrhode- Question
Scope (Diary) Saturday, October 29th at 5:28PM EST (link)I just went and checked the two pro-Cain diaries currently sitting in the Recommended list. You never recommended either one, and out of 16 comments one one, and 43 comments on the other, you are no where to be found there in support of your candidate. Yet you have commented many many times on this pro-Perry diary, with critical negative comments against Perry, and those that support him. What’s up with that, and what does that make you?
Diaries
jrhode2873 (Diary) Saturday, October 29th at 5:46PM EST (link)Because I have my own reasons when it comes to recommending diaries or not recommending them.
For much of the last 2 weeks on RedState, most of the front-page articles have been either negative articles about Cain (which I believe you posted a couple yourself) or pro-Perry articles. I’ve chosen to get involved in the discussion and challenge people’s views on Cain and Perry.
Wrong jrhode
Scope (Diary) Saturday, October 29th at 5:55PM EST (link)I haven’t posted a diary in many many moons on RS. Polls in Iowa...Romney and Cain and Ron Paul!
wbf (Diary) Saturday, October 29th at 8:24PM EST (link)The Des Moines Iowa Register released a poll tonight showing Cain edging Romney 23 to 22 percent. More details of the poll will be out tomorrow.

I am not too surprised. Farmers in Iowa are not sure of Perry’s energy policies and how they will affect their ethanol subsidies.
From what I read today it is still a very fluid situation.
What do you all make of it?
Farmers should be growing food not fuel
izoneguy (Diary) Saturday, October 29th at 9:21PM EST (link)Ethanol is a bad idea and has run it’s course.
Let’s get back to drilling for energy and let the farmers grow food.
Trust me – after the “Arab Spring” the farmers will have plenty
of hungry customers.
The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.
Great minds think alike!
tyman Saturday, October 29th at 9:46PM EST (link)Izoneguy,
I said about the same thing without seeing your post.
To sum up what I said: subsidies of any kind do not below in a free market economy and ONLY a conservative understands this.
To me, this one issue says that Perry is a true conservative that understands the free market.
Some of the smartest people, in terms of common sense, I know are or were farmers, and that includes Perry.
BTW, I heard Perry say in response to a question about him not doing well in school and how could he understand global warming, etc. His quick answer was that to be a pilot in the Air Force he had to study all types of math, physics and aerodynamics, so understanding science wasn’t a problem.
Under President Perry, a booming economy will provide farmers with more opportunities than they could imagine.
So what I got from Perry's ad is cut, balance and grow is basically a rebranded flat tax

Ethanol with corn is one of the worst ideas ever
tyman Saturday, October 29th at 9:36PM EST (link)If I told you that you could wave a magic wand and have anything to use as energy, what would be the last thing you would choose?
YOUR FOOD!
Corn is in so many different things. It’s no wonder that the price of food is going up.
I don’t think the ethanol subsidies are what they’re cracked up to be. Supposedly, the amount of corn that goes to ethanol is limited anyway. I read an article about it the other day, and then found another article espousing the exact opposite, so it’s not a simple issue.
The bottom line is that subsidies are wrong in a free market economy, and Perry is absolutely doing the RIGHT thing.
Ethanol is just a bad deal. It uses a food product to burn in our cars. I’d like to find the article I read when ethanol first became law, that said that it took MORE fuel to produce than the END RESULT. Think about it: it has to be grown, which takes oil in tractors, it has to be hauled and it has to be processed with oil.
Not only this, but I’ve noticed that my cars get lower mileage than with standard gasoline.
Oh, and don’t tell the people at the Mississippi Delta in the Gulf of Mexico that it doesn’t harm their economy. Just find a satellite image of the “dead zone” due to the fertilizers that get washed down the Mississippi and into the Gulf. That’s right, they use more fertilizer (nitrogen) to grow more corn, and the corn doesn’t absorb it all. It runs off and it goes down the Mississippi.
If you want ethanol, use the plant that they use in Brazil (some kind of grass, I think) that IS NOT FOOD!
Who signed ethanol into law? W. Oh yeah, Perry is another Bush…ri-i-i-ight.
Agreed, ethanol is a negative energy source.
d_lamar Saturday, October 29th at 10:14PM EST (link)It takes more btu’s to convert corn to ethanol than it produces.
Plus, unless you have a motor where the combustion is computer controlled, or designed for ethanol, the engine will not perform properly. It does not work in lawn mowers, line trimmers, motorcycles, boats, and airplanes. In addition to the engine not running right, it damages the rubber seals and hoses, which then cause a multitude of repair problems.
Boehner and company should have introduced a bill banning ethanol in gasoline on day 1 after they took control. But we all know they’re not going to touch that issue. It might cost them some votes somewhere.
It’s just more subsidies for their cronies, not a lot different from what Obama is doing with food stamps and student loan forgiveness for his constituency.
Yeah, where are all the anti-crony capitalists on this?
tyman Saturday, October 29th at 10:31PM EST (link)You could make a case for Perry looking out for oil companies, but the BTU argument stops that dead in its tracks. It takes more oil to produce ethanol!
Right-o about the rubber seals and hoses, etc!
The corn farmers aren’t going to miss out…corn is used for production of some plastics, etc. Don’t subsidies artificially affect prices, possibly to the detriment of farmers?

seth90212 Sunday, October 30th at 3:41AM EST (link)Romney called Perry’s hunting lodge rock “offensive.” Why have you not jumped on him and and accused him of playing the race card? Cain bills himself as an outsider and true conservative..

Isn’t that what all those speeches and ads are trying to convince us of? So when we see him become a weasley opportunist lapping up the presses attention and manufacturing descent. It seems far worse than Romney, let’s face it Romney is a liar. Romney is a hypocrite. Romney is a slimy weasel willing to say and do anything to get elected. Basically Romney is Obama. Cain is supposed to be one of us. Why will Cain support any candidate but Perry? Why would Cain state that he would be pleased to be Romney’s VP? Why would Cain attack Perry on something as absurd as someone else’s land containing a rock that some uneducated in the vernacular of the region find offensive for political gain? Why would you not reconsider your support in light of all this? Cain is for Romney, now consider that for a moment. Does it mesh with the image he is portraying for the electorate? Cain was a lobbyist, president of a federal reserve bank, twice failed candidate (president and senate) sound like an outsider to you? Oh and by the way Cain is a paid motivational speaker. Consider that the next time he is giving one of those authentic heartfelt speeches he is so famous for. Is it legitimate or are you just being taken in by a man that has made his living giving “authentic heartfelt motivational” speeches? Perhaps you should take sometime and make sure you aren’t being sold an Obama like bill of goods.

Scope (Diary) Sunday, October 30th at 12:07PM EST (link)I watched the interview also. Perry was relaxed, answered the questions directly, and he stayed on message of jobs and growth. Wallace wanted to keep going back and focusing on Perry’s low polling numbers, but he didn’t get Perry ruffled at all, Perry remained poised and on target.
Very interesting to hear Wallace say at the end that Romney is the only one who has not done his Sunday show, and that the Romney camp said he is not ready yet to sit down with Wallace. I wondered if Wallace brought that up because so many are saying that he and Fox are in the bag for Romney.

Chris Wallace is a jerk
Scope (Diary) Sunday, October 30th at 12:18PM EST (link)Despite the fact that Perry’s tax plan has gotten the endorsement of some of the top conservative organizations, and top economists, Wallace wanted to only focus on the leftist talking points about the Perry plan, and that it helps the wealthy. Kudos to Perry for telling him that he is not into playing the class warfare that the Obama admin. has engaged in. That’s a biggie for Perry. Wallace wanted to focus time on the fact that the Perry plan does not bring in enough revenue, and how is he going to cut the deficit. Perry rightly brought up the fact that his plan also focuses on cutting spending, and that the American people don’t want Washington continuing on the spending spree. When you cut the spending, the government doesn’t need to bring in as much revenue to pay for things like pork spending, vast amounts of government workers, and duplicate agencies. Perry said he would work to cut those unnecessary departments and government workers. He said there are many other areas of spending that could be cut, and didn’t fall back on waste and fraud. Perry said his focus is on putting money back into the hands of the people, and if some of those cuts benefit the wealthy, they will put those savings back into jobs and business growth, which is Perry’s ultimate goal.
Good interview, Perry did just fine. He didn’t allow Wallace to ruffle his feathers, or take him off message.
I think Wallace's little brain just wasn't able to take in less revenue and "spending cuts".......

Perry's energy plan
seth90212 Sunday, October 30th at 7:53PM EST (link)is questionable. Seems like a plan they just threw together just to have a plan. Even if you opened up more federal lands to oil exploration and production, you can’t force oil companies to explore and produce. Not when it’s more cost effective to produce oil overseas or simply to buy oil produced overseas.
Moreover, if America does become more energy independent that will only drive down the price of oil, which will kill American jobs. Remember, current high oil prices has created a boom which has created tens of thousands of jobs in this country. If oil prices were to decline by even $20 to $30 dollars, many of those oil fields will cease operations.
Drill, baby, drill is a nice slogan but it only has superficial merit. Oil is fungible. No one cares where it comes from.. An American company can produce oil overseas and ship it to this country at substantially lower costs than producing in the United States. Perry knows this. That’s why there are thousands of abandoned oil wells in his own Texas.
