President Trump met with Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and Steny Hoyer this afternoon on the subject of Syria. You didn’t need much imagination to see how this particular movie was going to end. Like the last several meetings between Trump and Pelosi, it broke down in recriminations. Allegedly, and I say that because the only people talking now are the Democrats and they aren’t terribly trustworthy, Trump called Pelosi a “third rate politician” and Pelosi resurrected the scurrilous falsehood disproven by Robert Mueller that Trump is doing Putin’s bidding. (By the way, if your only foreign policy objective is to do something to stymie another country, you don’t have a policy, you have a middle school mean girls clique.) When the meeting broke up, Trump promised to “see [them] at the polls.”
Now, both sides are engaged in trolling.
In her statement, on the video, Pelosi claims Trump was rattled by the House vote to disapprove of his action on Syria (that and about $7 will get you coffee at Starbucks).

Just some thoughts:
- There is little doubt in my mind that Trump was probably torqued by the House vote. He had no reason to be because it was obvious how that was going to go.
- A case might be made that Trump was trying to provoke Pelosi into an impeachment vote because it is easier to fight something than nothing. But I think the best explanation is that Trump and Pelosi detest one another and can’t be bothered to put on a facade of comity.
- I’m not really certain why Trump agreed to meet with the Democrat leadership on this subject. It isn’t like they are going to do anything but screw with him. My guess is that one of the big brain thinkers in the White House thought it would be a great show of something or another if Trump could be seen doing business with the vicious harridan who has spent three years trying to delegitimize his presidency. I hope that person is unemployed tonight.
- Neither side came out of this looking great, but neither was hurt in general and both sides gave their partisans some red meat.
- As long as impeachment is on the table, there is no good reason for Trump or his White House to have any dealings with Pelosi at all.
- If there was an upside to this, it was Trump sending a message to the executive branch that you deal with House Democrats at your peril.
