"How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!" --Psalm 133: 1
I must have heard that verse quoted to me a million and three times during my formative years. I'm the eldest of ten and five of my nine siblings share the same chromosomal structure. Of course, with that much testosterone in one house there was ample opportunity for... we'll call it animated disagreement. The truth of the matter is I was a pipsqueak but I was still spoiling for a little rough housing.

Waiting for the other shoe to drop. That's the best way to describe the continuing drama with the all-Democrat Detroit City Council. Several council members remain targets of a federal investigation into a bribe backed multi-million dollar deal with Synagro to handle waste and build an incinerator. Members and their staffs continue to be questioned and, sometimes, video-taped accepting funny money. And in the best Democrat tradition there isn't a one of them standing up and taking responsibility for his or her actions, although responsibility could be forced upon them somewhere down the road.

I was born and raised in Grand Rapids. This is my home. I love it here. I've had opportunities to move to Lansing, to head out to Washington, D.C., but none of that excites me. For years I'd commute 75 minutes each way to work (back when gas was under $2 a gallon, thank heavens) and when it came time to buy my first house I didn't look anywhere else.

I know more than usual everyone's starting off the week looking forward to Friday and who can blame any of us? July 4th has always been one of my favorite days of the year. I have an aunt and uncle (and cousins) who live out on Lake Bella Vista in Rockford and they always host my mom's side of the family on the fourth for swimming, tubing, a bbq, pick-up basketball, hot-tubbing, you name it. And God bless them, that's not an easy task. I'm the eldest of ten myself and my mom's number ten of twelve. Most of her siblings also have more than a handful of kids.

With the Barackstar insisting that gas prices need to continue their incremental rise, apparently attempting to teach us the "hard way" about energy independence John McCain is making waves this morning with a different solution to the same problem. He's got a new proposal to offer big-time tax incentives to Detroit's Big 3 ($5,000 a vehicle) for every flex-fuel auto they produce and sell along with a bigger prize, a $300,000,000 payday for the man or woman who can develop an automobile battery that'd be powerful enough to send a car screaming down the road and inexpensive enough to mass produce.

Fewer taxes equals more jobs. It's not rocket science and even the current crop of Democrats in Lansing, the biggest tax hikers in the state's history regularly admit it these days. Including today. They just approved tax breaks and credits for a handful of projects the administration proudly claims will "create" 3,900 jobs. (The list of projects and tax breaks is available HERE.)

Hey, Hey, Hockeytown! Congratulations to the Wings and all of the fans who've been with the team all year! What a last couple of games. Wow. Ozzie's the man and would have been my choice for the Con Smythe but you can't argue with Hank.
And in the immortal words of the great Mike Shanahan, "offseason starts tomorrow because (when we come back) we're going for two!"
Now, at the risk of moving too quickly from euphoria to despair, there's news all over the wires this morning illustrating that Lansing, the Governor and far more than half the students in Detroit either haven't learned or just plain refuse to try.
Proving that you can teach a liberal government new tricks provided each one comes with it's own tax or fee, the Lansing State Journal reports this morning that residents in the Capitol City are about to see over a half-million dollars swiped out of their pockets and shoved into the big-government trough at City Hall. Put succinctly:
Lansing is expecting to raise $520,000 for its $199.3 million 2008-09 budget by increasing existing fees and creating new ones.
Best, just about all of the new fees either directly targets job providers or low / no wage earners relying on City services. And folks grieving the loss of a loved one. Because if there's anyone who needs picking on it's those left behind after tragedy.
If you can't afford your own home and you're forced to rent a room in a multi-family house? You'll be paying more. Can't afford fancy after school activities for your kids and rely on City athletic programs? You'll pay more. Need to bury a loved one? Get ready to pay more.
Lansing is raising taxes on each of the following:

So is this progress or a fresh series of setbacks? Depends on your perspective, I suppose. Those of us who value fair play and folks keeping their jobs would certainly chalk these up as wins, but the libs? Probably not so much.
It's got to be tough, watching one of your heroes implode before your very eyes, unwilling to recognize and act on the signs screaming for him to exit, stage left. If it isn't a tawdry affair caught on text message it's a multiple count felony indictment, a recall attempt, requests from the hyper-liberal city council that the Democrat governor kick you out on your can and now this, maybe more frustrating than any but the Mayor's criminal indiscretions.

Everything you do, everything you say, everywhere you go, there's somebody with a tricorder taking it all in. And then it goes onto Youtube. And then people write about it, often with mean-spirited titles like "Obama's sniper tale? When he stood up to Detroit's 'cold' shoulder." And then it goes on the Internet. Not always in that order, but it goes out.
You are never off the record. You are never safely among friends. You are never able to just assume that something will just slide on by. And nothing that you do or say will ever go away.
Ever.
Have a nice day!

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Friday morning fights. This morning we have a battle for the ages. Brains versus brawn. Age versus youth. Decades of experience versus precocious curiosity. A contrast in styles for the ages. A sitting Detroit City Councilwoman and wife of a United States Congressman versus a girl barely in her teens.

The MSM has just discovered what we've known for months now here in the real world. The way the Democrats are behaving in Michigan lately is A) not so good and B) could cost them at the polls in November. For Pete's sake, a recent Rasmussen poll put Republican John McCain ahead of both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama here in the Wolverine State, a State that hasn't gone red since 1988. That's 20 years. That's longer than a good portion of Right Michigan readers have even been alive.

Notice how all of those sanctimonious comments and "gotcha" moments seem to have dried up over at the Michigan Democrat Party and their contingent in the press and new media? All of a sudden ethics and clean living aren't the issues they were back when they were trumpeting the comparatively rare Republican scandal almost always in another state.

This is the sort of move that makes those naturally inclined to distrust the government even more convinced they've got something to hide. While the elected, acting and sitting Mayor of the City of Detroit prepares to go to trial facing twelve counts including eight felony indictments that could land him in the clink for fifteen years, charges directly related to a cover-up by his administration, the good folks at city hall took cover-ups one step further this past weekend.
The family of dancer Tamara Greene, one Norman Yatooma, has retained council and is investigating her still unsolved murder.
There are a lot of unsolved murders in Detroit but this one is unique for one particular reason. Greene was rumored to have been involved in a little scuffle with the Mayor's wife at a wild party at the Manoogian Mansion. Rumors. I don't know if they're true. Frankly, I'd always assumed they weren't. Attorney General Mike Cox investigated the supposed party and concluded himself that it never happened.
It's a big stretch for me to think that it not only did happen but there was a dancer, she did fight with the Mayor's wife and that that may have some connection as to why she wound up dead.

And so the official Kwame Kilpatrick Resignation Watch begins. Yesterday the Wayne County prosecutor courageously (two words... Bobby Ferguson) handed down a twelve count indictment against the Mayor of Detroit that included eight felony charges with decades worth of prison time hanging in the balance. All but his most ardent supporters are calling for the man to step down and that includes the good folks in even the most leftist corners of the mainstream media.
